Hey everyone. My name is Stephen, and I'm traveling to one home game for every team in the NBA,MLB and NFL. My trip focuses on the fans, their feelings, and how they get lost in the shuffle.
I'm attending the game this Saturday night, and then doing a video blog on the Charlotte Bobcats.
I just want to properly represent your feelings so if you feel like replying with just your overall thoughts on the Bobcats that's fine. Say whatever you want, answer whatever questions you feel like answering. Just be honest.
A couple questions:
1) I'm from New Orleans, so as a Hornets fan I feel it's stupid that we are called the Hornets. That was your team. We don't even have many hornets in New Orleans. If the Hornets dropped their name, would you guys want to ditch the Bobcats name and take the Hornets theme back?
2) How awesome is Larry Brown?
3) How cool is it to have Muggsy Bogues in your front office? Do you ever see him walking around? He was so cool.
4) Whose your favorite player, and why? I'm not asking who the best player is, I'm asking who your favorite is. Your favorite player could be the best player though.
Thanks guys, good luck the rest of the season. Glad to see your team is doing well.
Stephen
Sounds like a fun project! If only I could afford that.

Absolutely. IDK if you know the history of it (or some others here) but Charlotte was a hotbed of revolt in the revolutionary War, enough so that the Brits called us "a Hornet's nest of trouble." That names is as important to Charlotte as Celtics is to Boston, and one of the (many) reasons we HATE Geroge Shinn.
2) How awesome is Larry Brown?
Great guy, has done some amazing work with Wallace, Felton, and Jackson. But his ego isn't great. Or his game management.
3) How cool is it to have Muggsy Bogues in your front office? Do you ever see him walking around? He was so cool.
Having Muggsy and Dell Curry around is awesome, Charlotte loves both of them, and they do great work in the community. I think Dell has a foundation with Steve Smith of the Panthers, and ESPN's Jay Bilas, that works with underprivileged kids. Great guys, both of them.
4) Whose your favorite player, and why? I'm not asking who the best player is, I'm asking who your favorite is. Your favorite player could be the best player though.
Gerald "Crash" Wallace, no question. He gives effort every night, whether it's a 3 point game or a 30 point game, and is probably the only name most casual fans would recognize. He's an All-Star in every sense, and the best leader you could ask for. Just ask someone what they thought of him being shopped and almost traded for TJ Ford and you'll see what he means to everyone. He should be here as long as he wants, and his number should be retired as soon as he does.
For the record, though, Jackson's a better player overall.

Would do that yesterday.

s'ok

Saw him in the Drive thru at McDonalds at 51/Park in 1993...I was workin the fries during the lunch rush and homeboy rolls up in his SL500.

Ray Ray (more for his college accomplishments, admittedly). He's also the one I yell at the most (excluding the past few games where its been exclusively Doris)

Welcome to Bobcats planet
1st Finaly we starting to get noticed . This has been a long hard job after the Shinn thing. Peoplae are starting to love the Cats and thair work ethic . So i think we should stick with the Cats .
2nd How to explain Brown, a genius who bodor lines crazy . Knows how to push all the right butons to get the most out of ever player . It the player don't buy in he is as good as gone . Brown is the reason we the number 1# defencive team in the league. I have no doubt we see our first platoff aperance this year under Brown.
3. Muggs don't get into many topics around hear . Though im sure he does agood job.
4. Wallace, aka Crash , aka G Force. The most under rated player in the league .
Hes a top 10 player in the league , but can't make a all star team due to our market . He post better over all numbers than all most any player in the league . Rebound , points, , steals. blocks. defencive stoper, He fills a stat sheet not just points. NO one hustles more in the league.
Just my thoughts hope they help.......

Great stuff man, especially Wallace. Do you guys really call him "Crash"?
One more thing, do you guys have a Bobby Phills jersey hanging up in the rafters? We have one here, but I always wondered if you had one also.

1) NOLA and Shinn can keep his name...we're the Bobcats.
2) Best BB teacher in the NBA game.
3) Crash without a doubt.

Oh yeah, Crash is his nickname. It's even on NBA 2k10, the announcers call him Crash. You'll see why when you watch them play.
And no, no Phills jersey, I think the reason behind that is it's a Hornets-related thing, and that'd give people a bad image of a great guy. I don't know if anyone outside the Carolinas gets how much venom there is to Shinn and anyone who was part of them leaving, and sadly that tarnishes the names of guys like Baron, David Wesley, even to an extent Paul Silas, and that stretches out to all former Hornets, even Muggsy and Dell. I don't know if you've been to Seattle, but from what I can tell they feel the same way towards Durant and co.
edit: the only reason anyone remotely roots for the Hornets is Chris Paul, who is as popular in some places as MJ.

Yeah, I always knew Gerald Wallace was a great hustler, I just personally have yet to hear the nickname "Crash". That's a great name for him.
Just as a Hornets fan I have to say I really am glad you guys have the Bobcats and that the team is finally swinging up for you guys. I know what Shinn did, and I get it 100%. I tell people all the time here it's hard to get behind him, because what's going to stop him from moving the Hornets one day if he doesn't like us?
It's like a guy who starts a relationship with a girl whose already married. She cheated and then eventually left her husband for a new guy. That guy always has to have in the back of his mind "she cheated/left that guy for me, whose to say she won't leave me for another guy later on down the road" if that makes any sense whatsoever.
Can't wait to see Charlotte, hope you guys make the playoffs! Thanks for everything, keep any replies coming, I want to get your voice out there.

without reading other posts first:
1. absolutely, bob's cats is terrible
2. he is definitely showing his value, not the biggest fan though
3. mugsy's bank commercials are better
4. crash...he is the heart and soul of the team. someone you would love to play/work with
have fun at the game. never mind the pa announcer though.
^Stpehen, then you know that Shinn and one of his assistants/friends (Mott maybe?) really wanted to stay in OKC permanently, and that only a few strong willed people were able to keep the team in NoLa. And this cap-saving stuff you're about to see? Get used to it, Shinn does it all the time.
Also, your former PR guy and PA guy (at the same time!) Michael Thompson is now our PR guy, so if you know him, try to find him before or after the game.
And to everyone else - can MT replace Pat? Please?

1) I'm really up in the air - I grew up loving the Hornets as a kid (PS- Anyone remember when Kendall Gill was on My Brother & Me on Nickelodeon?), but I feel like we are now developing our own identity, and that identity is no longer the Memphis Grizzlies or Clippers of the East.
2) Hiring Larry is the best decision this organization has ever made.
3) Muggsy is the man - I like him so much, I almost considered watching a Charlotte Sting game one time just because he was coaching.
4) Derrick Brown is my favorite - ceiling is sky high, plays hard all the time, good kid and an absolute steal where we drafted him.

Speaking of cap saving...how's Chandler working out? Last couple years he's had toe issues, but before that he was a great piece in New Orleans. Played hard, loved his team mates from what I saw.

you probably won't see him play, but if you see a tall guy flirting with ladies in the first row, that's a guy who "loves his teammates and plays hard"
But it'll be great when we trade his expiring contract next year

1) I think a few seasons ago i would of loved to have our name back but now it has grown on me and i think that it just wouldnt be the same as b/4.
2) LB is a great guy who respects the game and knows more about b-ball than most and probally has forgotten more than most coaches know today. Plus he was the coach for the ABA carolina cougers (Nc first b-ball team) 72-74 and with his ties to NC and to our FO i feel its a great combo. for both sides.
Just a lilttle read to help out.....
(The other significant break for this franchise occurred when general manager Carl Scheer hired recently-retired ABA players Larry Brown (http://www.remembertheaba.com/TributeMaterial/LarryBrown.html) and Doug Moe (http://www.remembertheaba.com/TributeMaterial/Moe.html) to coach the team in 1972-73. With Cunningham and Caldwell, plus the speedy Mack Calvin at guard, Brown had some All-Star caliber players to work with. Ed Manning (father of current NBA star Danny Manning) Gene Littles, and Steve "Snapper" Jones also were there to provide still more veteran leadership. The Cougars also had some impressive young players like Dennis Wuycik, Tom Owens, Ted McClain and Steve Previs. During training camp in the Fall of 1972, Brown implemented a trapping defense plus the "passing-game" offense, and the new look Cougars took off from there.
The Cougars were 8-3 in the exhibition season, highlighted by a 5-1 record against NBA and including one-sided blowouts over the New York Knicks, the Boston Celtics, the Atlanta Hawks, the Buffalo Braves and the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. The Cougars jumped out quickly in the regular season as well, winning their first four games and eight of their first 11, and occupying a first-place standing that remained constant through the entire 1972-73 season (an ABA first). Attendance increased 40% over the year before: 340,000 fans, a club record, witnessed Cougar action in North Carolina. This figure included 14,126 rabid Cougars fans who turned out on December 30, 1972 in Greensboro to see the Carolina play its arch-rival, the Kentucky Colonels. After three quarters of nip-and-tuck ball, the Cougars ousted Kentucky 104-91. The victory was Carolina's sixth straight, and it allowed the Cougars to keep first place going into 1973.
Carolina ended up winning 57 games in 1972-73, the most in the ABA that season. Billy Cunningham (overall league MVP), Larry Brown (ABA Coach of the Year), and even Carl Scheer (ABA Executive of the Year) garnered impressive individual honors. Three Cougars -- Cunningham, Caldwell and Calvin (the "Three C's") -- played in the 6th Annual ABA All-Star Game, played on February 6, 1973 in Salt Lake City.
With home court advantage throughout the 1973 ABA Playoffs, expectations for the Cougars were high. In the first round, the Cougars outmanned and overwhelmed New York, eliminating the Nets in four straight games. In the second round, the Cougars faced Dan Issel, Artis Gilmore and the Kentucky Colonels (http://www.remembertheaba.com/Kentucky-Colonels.html). This hard-fought series went the full seven games. After taking a 3-2 series lead, poor shooting prevented Carolina from closing out the series. The Colonels won Game 6 at Louisville in a 119-100 blowout. Game 7 was played at the Charlotte Coliseum, and an ABA Finals berth against the Indiana Pacers awaited the winner. The Colonels broke open a close and tense game in the second half, and coasted to a 107-96 victory before 10,231 disappointed Cougars fans.
3) YEa mugsy was doin our radio brodcast for awhile and i ran into him a few times at the arena, and i dont think theres a nicer guy out there who still loves his fans and charlotte. ( D.Currys the man also just as homble and all around good guy)
4) Hands down Wallace a.k.a crash is gotta be IMO the best player on our team b/c no matter what the score you know he's going to give you 110% from tip off to final buzzer. And about the jersey in the rafters i wish i we had one but i can see why we dont that was a hard time for our city to go threw. But for those of us that were around then, he still is in our hearts and will be forever....
Good luck with the mission it sounds like a great idea and make sure you post the link, and GO CATS.......

1) No. I wouldn't take back the Hornets name. Because when people think Bobcats, they think of Cpt. Jack, Crash and Felton flying down the floor on the fast break. They think of Crash hustling for every ball. Bobcats is our identity now, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
2) He's great, but stupidly crazy at times. He can do marvellous things with tough and complex players, and he can even crap out defense, from every hole on his body and face. A lot of the times he confuses the hell out of us (i.e Drafting Diop, keeping starters in when they're playing terrible). But he's really turned this team around for the better. After two terrible coaches and a terrible start to the franchise we love, we're turning it around.
3) Muggsy...I'm still relatively new so I have utterly no idea who this guy is.
4) Probably Felton or Crash. Both put 100% in, no matter what. Felton isn't the best PG, but you can tell he tries his hardest out there and plays as hard as he can night in night out. Felton comes under alot of scrutiny here, but I love the guy for trying the hardest he can with what he had to work with. He use to take the last shot of the game because there was no one clutch on our team, but even facing lots of flak he would take the shot.
Crash is a guy who will also try night in and night out. He'll hustle, drive and sacrifice his body every game for the Bobcats. He is the guy who will never give up, no matter whether he's scoring terribly, or scoring well. He isn't the best scorer in the league, but he plays with the most heart and hustle.
TC) He's been a disappointment. I was hoping for a 10/10 player, but we got a "still" injured Center averaging 6/6. He's been poor for us, but I can see him working hard on the defensive end. He turns the ball over a lot, draws easy fouls and seems subpar to the play of Nazzy Mohammed, but I think we still have yet to see the limit of potential from Chandler.
MJ) I think he's done an okay job. He really needs to put more support behind the Bobcats. I don't really know too much about MJ and his role, so I'll leave it up to the older Bobcats fans to answer that one.

I could see that. I think that's how a lot of Bulls fans felt about him too. Just to back him up in this sense, I think TC can be great, but he needs to be pushed/want it (obviously). Chris Paul could do that. There was some point where Tyson Chandler literally would of taken a bullet for Chris Paul, I really believe that. It was like watching big brother play with little brother. Chris Paul got him involved and got rid of his "bust" title that many others felt he was. He was a major factor to the Hornets big run a couple years ago.
When you take Chris Paul out of the equation though, I guess you get what you have now, and that's a shame. If he could play for you guys how he did 3 years ago, it would elevate the Bobcats so much. I hope he gets his act together, I really enjoyed him.

I think thats my fa. pix. of all time of them two seperate or together lol thats classic i wish i could get a poster of it lol.....
What's your guys feeling towards MJ and his role with the Bobcats?
I don't think he's doing anything player wise anymore, I think that's all Rod Higgins, who's finally earned MJ's trust, after being a teammate and assistant in Washington. MJ will always be adored in NC, and blocking MJ from owning part of the Hornets probably was just as bad for Shinn as anything else he did.
I do want to say this on the Hornets name, though. I would rather NoLa drop it than us get it back. It's just offensive, really. Hornets has no relevance outside of the Queen City, and it'd help out both teams from being called the Charlotte Hornets (I saw both teams called that in the same day!).
And Stephen, I don't know how you usually do these trips, but there are multiple BCP STH's who I'm sure would love to talk to you.

I agree 100% with that statement. It's how I feel every time the Jazz play. Jazz in Utah and Hornets in New Orleans are just slaps in the fan bases face in terms of originality. I'd rather be called the New Orleans Humidifiers then the New Orleans Hornets. It's a stupid name obviously, but at least it describes our culture and who we are.
My plans have moved around a little, but I am 100% officially attending the Monday game on MLK day at 2. If anyone would be interested in giving their points of view on the Bobcats, let me know and I will make arrangements to be there extra early to record you in front of the arena. I can't make a 100% promise that I can use what I shoot, but as long as it's honest and heart felt then I'm sure I can put it in. It's like I said, each visit is for the fans point of view, so fan participation its welcomed.

Still makes me sick. At the time, I really didnt think it was THAT big a deal, not really thinking he would come back to actually play. In hindsight, after seeing him improve a 20ish win wizards team to 40wins or so....imagine him on those 45-50 win, 2nd round playoff Hornets teams. We're talkin finals, possible title.

Shinn "owns" the Hornets in name and so its really just a reflection of his poor conscience that he kept the name in New Orleans. But the Hornets are a well established NBA brand that he wanted to keep (partly thanks to the early love they received in Charlotte; and partly due to exceptional branding). It shows however that the brand has absolutely nothing to do with the location. The location is secondary so long as the financial package is worthy. I think the Sonics/Thunder are one of the very few teams to actually do the necessary thing and just change the name.
I think its generally agreed that Bob Johnson picked an awful name for his team, and force-fit it into a town that to a large extent didn't even want it. Team branding and marketing has been poor, though this years new uni's are a big help.
When Muggsy was doing Bobcats radio; I'd often see him hanging around the lower club concessions area before a game. Whenever I'd wave and throw a Hey Muggsy! his way he'd always flash me a big smile. When I first moved to Winston-Salem in the mid '80's; Muggs was the starting PG for a bad Wake Forest team. But EVERYONE loved Muggsy. He was amazing.
I haven't seen Muggsy at the arena this year. Not sure whats up with that.

My favorite aspect of Larry Brown is that he isn't Sam Vincent; as in - he doesn't stand in the paint during timeouts sucking his thumb beside his assistants who for good reason would be silently staring down at the floor.
And to better understand THAT - you might want to peruse this thread from BCP:

The one thing that REALLY bugs me is seeing the legacy of Adam Morrison being wasted in LA. Okay I'm kidding.
To truly understand the Bobcats; one must consider that it was "us" (yep m . r. us lol) that drafted Adam Morrison ahead of Rudy Gay and Brandon Roy. One year later we hired Sam Vincent, who pulled Jeff McInnis literally off the street and made him our starting PG over Felton. Of course, the Charlotte Observer still thinks we should be starting Brevin Knight; but that's a 'nuther story.
Anyway; sometime late in that season; the team up and just cuts McInnis after starting him the game before. No explanation. Poof. We can only imagine what Jeff did to deserve that.
We are still recoving from all that devastation; which makes the recent credibility this team is earning all the more amazing and to the credit of Mr. Larry Brown.

You speak a lot of Bobcat wisdom my friend.
From an outsiders perspective, I give Larry Brown a boat load of credit. I feel like a couple of years ago, this organization was really weak. Like somebody stated before, the Clippers of the east. That's how I viewed them.
Larry Brown coming in seems to me like it changed everything. The Morrison pick was god awful. It was obvious that it was awful when it first made. Recovering from such a pick like that is hard to do. Luckily you shipped him out asap.
Thus far though I have not seen anyone really say much on Stephen Jackson. I think for this team he's perfect. Does anyone else agree?

We love Jack. Our good friend TheBeagle once said
"I can't think of a guy I'd rather battle with in a basketball game than Raja; I know he's got my back, and he's leaving it all on the floor."
but after he saw Jack play a couple games, he said
"I had no idea at the time, but as it turns out, the only person I'd be willing to see Raja traded away for happened to be the dude we got.....JACK!"
That sum it up?
Can someone please explain the Sam Vincent/ham sandwich connection? That's too epic!

Instead of giving the correct answer of "Fire Sam Vincent" our dimwitted friend suggests fixing the team with a "Fine Ham Biscuit" so everyone took it and ran with it
Props to Amour for thinking of it, and the better question is how he got 4k in the first place.

You have already given me more then enough info, but if you can just please clarify this for me because I think it's so awesome...
Who is "our dimwitted friend"?. Where is the actual term "Fine Ham Biscuit" derived from? Did someone in the media say it? Did someone on this site come up with it in a joking manner?

Sam Vincent is the dimwit, and I think FHB came from Amour on here. But with all the Bojangles' around here, it's a common term I guess.

I got a couple answers, statements and a question for Stephenwashere.
1. Now since the bobcats have some relevence no. The hornets have their place in NC sports history but now it's pointless.
2. LB is the man putting the bobcats on the map (or part of the reason atleast.)
3. The biggest Little guy ever.
4. My favorite player is Crash no doubt. His hustle and the effort he gives night in and night out is unparralelled in the NBA.
TC. I was ecpecting decent things out of this. so far all i got was Nazr as our starter.
MJ. He's great to have I he would ever do anything.
also stephen I wanna know, how are you (not)liking Emeka Okafor?
Also going on the Charlotte Hornets thing, New Orleans are on the giving end as well. The New Orleans Jazz? What does Salt Lake City have to do with Jazz, Just like what does New Orleans have anything to do with Hornets.

About Okafor -- To us he's not that bad. That's because you guys picked him number 1 and had a big huge emotional attachment to this guy because he was the number one pick of the whole franchise and he never made it too far.
To us he's the guy we traded a fan favorite for. He's quiet. The most I notice him is on defense as he's getting owned. But offensively and how he fits for this team they are trying to build, I couldn't really complain.
This city feels the same way about the Jazz, but it's only the older people obviously. My earliest memories of the Jazz are Karl Malone and John Stockton, so I never really associated with them.
They should just have one day where everyone can switch their names back, get new names that are finalized.

Using previous quotes of mine to illustrate a point will get you everywhere and everything in life! +1 +1 +1 +1
As for Muggsy, living near Winston-Salem, I was enamored with him as a tyke when he was at Wake Forest....being a Tarheel, Kenny Smith was my absolute hero, but Muggsy was just cool. And if he hadn't already cemented his legendary legacy, his appearance on Curb Your Enthusiasm (season 4, I think...the bathroom scene with LD and Lewis) sure did it!
