View Full Version : The OFFICIAL Free Gerald Henderson Thread

Correct me if there is already an official Gerald Henderson thread. Rufus On Fire has been advocating for some time to Cut Stephen Graham and Free Gerald Henderson. I don't believe Stephen should be cut, and he can make a great 14th or 15th man. But this is got to stop. GW and Jax are 1st and 6th in MPG respectively, and they are clearly worn out.
The obvious solution seems to be putting Hendo and UPS in more. Is Larry losing his mind? Will the madness end? Maybe if we sign Michael Finley, he will end up getting 15 minutes a game. If Theo can do it, maybe Finley can too. :g:

Correct me if I'm wrong but i'm pretty sure that even if Hendo is a rookie he can do whatever it is Gerald Wallace has been doing since a little before the all star break. I mean it doesnt take a superstar to run up and down the court and hide behind the 3 point line until someone else shoots, then come running in 30 seconds late for a rebound. I just cant get over how bad Gerald has been lately. That Wallace played 43 minutes last night against the Mavs was a freaking travesty. completely useless. There is absolutely no reason that Hendo and Brown shouldnt get a ton more minutes than they are getting.

i don't think you will find too many members of bcp that are against this. in fact, i gripe about it so much, one would think that i'm a fan of duke (nope...Syracuse).
And because I'm bored on this overcast cold morning and my puppy is preoccupied, I researched mpg for the top 20 picks in '09. Obviously the crappier the team, the more minutes a rookie will get, but the gap is huge (sans Earl Clark) :
1. Griffin - IR
2. Thabeet - 10.3 (DLeague)
3. Harden - 23
4. Evans - 37
5. Rubio - Europe
6. Flynn - 29
7. Curry - 35
8. Hill - 10
9. DeRozan - 21
10. Jennings - 33
11. Williams - 19
12. HENDO - 7.7
13. Hansbrough - 18 (IR)
14. Clark - 7.8
15. Daye - 12
16. Johnson - 9
17. Holiday - 20
18. Lawson - 22
19. Teague - 10
20. Maynor - 15

Those MPG are a lie. Look at how many games he's played and how many he hasn't. If you add on the games he hasn't played, that MPG looks probably a lot more like 2-3. I don't know what LB is thinking really. I'm hoping he will see that Crash as well as Jax is exhausted and put in Hendo/UPS. Jax and Crash aren't getting any younger, and UPS/Hendo need the dev. time. Isn't this ironic, I blogged about giving our rookies playing time 2 months ago? And look what's happening, still waiting on them to get decent PT.

yeah, the 7.7 mpg must be calculated using only games he appeared in. as a reference point, i checked acie law's minutes in charlotte and it's at 3.7mpg. i think acie played a combined 12-15 minutes his entire bobcats career. in my head, gerald's avg'ing a lot less than almost 8 minutes a game. the whole bench/rotation issue is the only problem that i have with lb. i like his approach to the game, mentoring, interviewing, etc. , but having young guys ride the pine this badly is inexcusable. i would think common sense tells you that riding your horses 40+ mpg is going to burn them out over an 82 game season.

Perhaps we need to make a giant sign that says "Free Gerald Henderson" and take them to games. Larry will HAVE to notice, won't he?

I'm not sure that would "help" Hendo...LB has never given me the impression of taking advice from anyone...and certainly when forced to it has resulted in very negative situations...IMO the only person that can have (possible) a positive impact on this situation is MJ...short of that I see no change...
...and I do not know of (but sure if there is they post under my statement as the next poster...ROFLMAO) anyone at BCP that does not agree with you on the time issue jd...

A better way to get a look at the minutes would be total minutes played for the season if somebody could find that.
I am starting to think LB just knows how to mess up a young player between the ears. Once Larry started coaching the team Morrison looked worse then ever. Now DJ looks like he is going down the exact same road of passing up open shots. Every time Hendo gets in he looks like a chicken with his head cut off as he tries like crazy to make something happen. Despite some positive signs from Lexy, remember the pistons game where we almost came back from down 30 with lex and hollins in the game and his preseason this year when he was our best big, LB has never given him much time.

Derrick Brown: 479 Minutes
Gerald Henderson: 222 Minutes
For comparison's sake..Henderson is ahead of only 7 players that were drafted this year and have played in an NBA game. Marcus Thornton, pick #43, has 1161 minutes. Stephen Curry has 2056!

I love that we are fighting for the playoffs this year, but I would much rather have something along the lines of the 2008-2009 OKC Thunder than our team. I'd like to know we are taking steps towards a championship, rather than a (poor man's) Washington Wizards fire sale.
There is no way Stephen Fucking Graham is better than Henderson. No way in hell. Yet Graham continues to play and Henderson doesn't. I applaud Larry Brown for turning this team around but seriously Henderson must be the worst practice player ever to be getting beat out by Graham.
FREE Gerald Henderson!!!

2-3 years down the road, maybe not, but right now, I trust Graham with those minutes way more than Henderson. I know a lot of people on here are disappointed that Gerald isn't playing more, but you have to acknowledge that Graham is a very solid contributor given the limited minutes he gets. He almost always does something positive when he's in. He's certainly not as athletic, but he's got a much nicer J than Henderson. With all the fanfare over how good Lexi looked in the preseason, I'm much more perplexed and bothered by his lack of minutes than Henderson's at this point. At least Henderson has managed to stay on the big league team.

Remember when everyone touted Hendo as the most NBA ready player in the draft:facepalm:

Yeah, Graham is very consistent and has a high BBIQ. He plays very solid D and can hit a J when needed. Hendo, however, can't seem to hit the side of a barn.
Sorry, Hendo hasn't earned the PT from what I've seen, and that "NBA ready" touting didn't count on him going into a Larry Brown scheme.

Loved his D...and on Kobe no less.

He played really well! Showed a lot of effort and ability. Best yet, he kept jax and Crash from getting overly worn-out.
Kid played tremendously on Kobe, gotta give him some props, and I was wrong, he's better than Stevie.
But Stevie still shoots better.
EDIT:
In LB's Presser found here: http://www.bobcatsbreak.com/?p=1892
I was proud of Gerald Henderson. The first time we played the Lakers in LA he said "Coach, I'd like to play against them," and I was a little nervous about that, but I saw him play in Boston; If he makes mistakes, if he takes a bad shot, it's not because he isn't trying so I think I'm gonna put him in more, give him a chance.
Second EDIT:
In the Henderson interview just under that, at the 2 minute mark MJ comes up to Hendo and congratulates him. Hendo's biggest game ever?

I've not seen a good explanation for not playing him other than "rookie"...he was reputed to be NBA ready defensively and I've yet to see a game (when he has played) that has made me think that he is not ready defensively...he needs work on his shot but is a great athlete and he defends...he needs PT...

good riddance stephen graham. here's to hoping he gets stephen's minutes from here on out.
since LB says he likes the athletic, fast break, uptempo game, i would LOVE to see him try to run a lineup of SJax/Hendo/UPS/Wallace/Tyrus for a 3-4 minute stretch during a time we need some energy. If the offense goes into a lull, throw that lineup in and run run run.

I'll probably go to my grave adamant we should've taken Jrue over Henderson (and thus far, my feelings have only been reinforced) but I've been really proud of his play the last couple games. Sure, his offensive game is still somewhere back in the bronze age, but he does play the other side of the ball with a certain intensity that is fun to watch. Congrats to 12, and here's to continued PT!
Catching up with a few "chats" I've missed...this one (3/10/10) kinda bothered me since I like Thorpe...have to catch his next one and get him to expand...
David (SoDak)
Thorpedo, love the chat so far. How do you feel about my boy Gerald Henderson, crazy explosive athlete but doesn't seem to get much of a chance. Will he be successful?
David Thorpe (12:55 PM)
I'm worried about him. He wasn't competitive until his last season at Duke. Needs to step it up a few notches for LB.
So...you guys think he's been freed yet? Or is he now only in a prison work program?

He'll probably get consistent 10 minutes I'm hoping. Unless he's playing well, I doubt he'll get any more then 10 or so minutes.

I am still calling for the liberation of Gerald Henderson. Moreover, Derrick Brown needs to have the chains of LB removed. 11 and 5 minutes respectively in the Philly game...really? The whole 2nd half was garbage time, you can get them more than that.
39 minutes for GW and Jax in a blowout is also ridiculous. Get them some rest when you can. They're going to be worn out by the time the playoffs come around.

Derrick Brown is a much better player than Gerald so thats no surprise, but either way, both numbers are way too low. Brown should have played at least twice as many minutes as he has. I'd have to agree with some of the others on Graham as well. He just looks better out there. Gerald runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. He needs to be developed, I actually think he should have spent some time in the DL so he'd at least be playing somewhere.

I agree that he looks lost, especially on offense. I think the main reason that is the case is that he didn't get many minutes to begin with. There was simply too long of a wait. I don't think the D-League would help much though. He would probably rely on his athleticism there. Better to get him oriented to the NBA game.
The primary (as others have pointed out) is that he needed some "consistent" playing time from the start of the season...that did not happen and he's trying to catch-up...I have not been enamored with how Hendo or UPS have been "developed" this year...I find it very disappointing...:g:

The problem, though, is that he still can't shoot. His effectiveness (and I acknowledge that he has made a positive impact the past few games) is due to his hustle and athleticism. While both are commedable, there's a limit to how far that can take him and us. I don't mean to sound overly harsh because I actually like Gerald quite a bit, but until or unless his skill set improves dramatically (i.e. he develops a consistent jump shot) he'll forever remain a fringe rotation guy.
