FanHouse - Tim Povtak (http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/03/14/aging-theo-ratliff-has-sparked-bobcats-playoff-rise/)

ORLANDO -- The future of the Charlotte Bobcats (http://nba.fanhouse.com/team/bobcats) belongs to guys like Gerald Wallace (http://www.fanhouse.com/tag/Gerald+Wallace/), Boris Diaw (http://nba.fanhouse.com/players/boris-diaw/3724) and Raymond Felton (http://www.fanhouse.com/tag/Raymond+Felton/).

For now, it's the old war-horse Theo Ratliff (http://www.fanhouse.com/tag/Theo+Ratliff/) who may have become the key to their run toward the first playoff appearance in franchise history.

The Bobcats (http://nba.fanhouse.com/team/bobcats) have younger big men like Tyrus Thomas (http://www.fanhouse.com/tag/Tyrus+Thomas/) and Tyson Chandler. (http://www.fanhouse.com/tag/Tyson+Chandler/) They have bigger guys like DeSagna Diop and Nazr Mohammed (http://nba.fanhouse.com/players/nazr-mohammed/3272) still on the roster. Yet it's the well-traveled Ratliff, still viewed as an undersized center, who has become their anchor in the late-season drive.

Ratliff, who is playing for the ninth different team in his 14-year NBA career, was obtained from the San Antonio Spurs (http://nba.fanhouse.com/team/spurs) Feb. 18 in a cup-of-coffee trade (actually, for a 2016 second-round pick) at the insistence of coach Larry Brown (http://www.fanhouse.com/tag/Larry+Brown/), who was looking for someone he could trust.

Ratliff, who turns 37 next month, hardly was playing for the veteran Spurs (http://nba.fanhouse.com/team/spurs), but Brown quickly put him into his starting lineup. The Bobcats have won seven of his 11 starts, including the last six consecutive games.

He was especially instrumental in their 96-89 victory Sunday over the Orlando Magic (http://nba.fanhouse.com/team/magic) -- a potential first-round playoff opponent -- and particularly down the stretch when he thwarted a potential home-team comeback.

He had 10 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes, but statistics never have been his forte. In the last six minutes: he blocked a shot by Vince Carter (http://nba.fanhouse.com/players/vince-carter/3248), who tried to drive on him. He changed two driving layups, by Jameer Nelson (http://nba.fanhouse.com/players/jameer-nelson/3837) and Mickael Pietrus (http://nba.fanhouse.com/players/mickael-pietrus/3714), that became misses. He also grabbed an offensive rebound to keep another possession alive.

"Theo looks like when I had him back in Philly,'' said Brown, who coached Ratliff from 1998-2001 with the Sixers. "Only thing, he never got any shots back then. Everyone just told him to rebound the ball.''

Magic center Dwight Howard had another big game, getting 27 points and 16 rebounds, but only five points in the fourth quarter when the Bobcats took control. In those final six minutes, Ratliff was more of a factor than Howard.

"Theo always has done what he does best -- defend, rebound, be incredibly unselfish,'' Brown said. "He's doing things now that we really need. Thank God (San Antonio GM and coach) Gregg Popovich is a good friend of mine. We needed him (Ratliff).''

If the Bobcats (34-31) meet the Magic in the first round of the playoffs, it will be the third consecutive year Ratliff will have faced Howard at playoff time. He was back with Philadelphia last spring for their six-game series, which gave the Magic some surprising problems. He was with Detroit two years ago when the Pistons blanketed Howard and beat the Magic in the second round.

"I'm just enjoying this whole experience because I still love to play, and I try to play the right way,'' Ratliff said. "You can see the hunger here (in the locker room). They all want to be the guys who get this team to the playoffs for the first time.''

Ratliff sounds almost like a Larry Brown disciple. He does the blue-collar work that guys like Chandler, Thomas, and Diop are reluctant to do. It's no coincidence that they are winning now with Ratliff as the starter. He has been around enough teams to know what works. And he has seen the results that Brown always seems to get.

"I could see it when I got here. Larry is constantly pushing guys to get better, constantly demanding perfection from them,'' he said. "You can see the discipline he brought. You can see the mark he put on this team.''

Ratliff might be one of those centers who plays until he is 40. As usual, he has no guarantee beyond the end of the season, working again on a one-year contract with no promises that he will return to Charlotte next season.

"I've been year-to-year for the last three or four years. It's always possible (that I'll be back),'' he said. "But right now I feel real good physically. There's no reason why I can't keep playing at this level.'' A flat out steal I tell you!

Interesting note I learned last night during the ORL game...Theo owns a World Basketball Association team...the Rome Gladiators, based in Rome Georgia.

Terrific find! And I am glad that Theo is getting this kind of press. He truly deserves it. He is really proving to be a lifesaver for the Bobcats. You are right - a steal.

I'll be honest, when we made this trade I thought very little of it. I figured he was coming in until our bigs got better and once Chandler got back he would take over. Wow was I wrong. The man has been on a mission, improving our defense even more, allowing Thomas and Chandler to come off the bench and bring some great energy. He's also brought some energy to our starting line-up with some huge blocks as well as huge dunks. He's a steal for a 2016 draft pick that probably never be recognized...

For a 2016 2nd round pick is truly a gift from Pop. When we got him, I thought he would be a veteran rotational guy like Juwan was last year helping spell our bigs with the second unit. Didn't anticipate him starting and being such a factor. Players like this are who you need during crunch time and in the locker room. Nice one LB!

His impact is obvious when you watch the games, he's constantly altering shots and becomes a nuisance for any opposing big man. What a steal, a 2016 2nd rd pick? Think about that, whoever gets chosen with that pick isn't even in college yet.

and that 2016 2nd rounder is top 50 protected...means it could go on till 2020 or later. Though when the trade was made, many places said the picks are usually never fulfilled, its just a way to get the NBA to approve a trade since both teams have to give up something

It's not just a 2016 2nd round pick...it's a 2016 2nd round pick IF we reach the finals this season! If that doesn't happen we don't owe SAS ANYTHING!

Free. I love "free". Pop is da man!

So it's essentially an "up yours!" to the nba system's trade policy. a team can't just give away a player to another for whatever reason, collusion i guess, so they made this ridiculous playstation 3 nba 2k10 trade...haha. thank you pop!

Are you sure about that Spectre? I haven't heard that anywhere else. If that is the case (and it probably is based on your reputation), then you're right, we got him for nothing.

SAS are over the luxury limit so they just wanted him off the books but how can that guy not find some minutes in anyone's system?

I saw in a quote from Larry Brown that is sure is a good thing that he and Pop are great friends...this leads me to believe that both LB and Pop knew exactly what they were doing. Damn it feels good to have a coach that is well connected!

Be funny if we made the finals this year, so did the Spurs and Theo shut down TD for 7 games and we won the championship.

Obviously highly unlikely (for us to be there or the Spurs for that matter!) but it would be very interesting.

Wonder if Pop and LB would still be mates!!

Yah, Steph Ready gave us that during a game doing her sideline reporting right after the trade (I made a post about it then somewhere). All they wanted was the tax relief, but per NBA rules we had to send something.

Excellent article, i remember Theo bullying Tony DiLeo last season.Seems as though we are one of the better teams after the trade deadline

It will be interesting to see if we bring him back...I'd feel better about it if we could (by some miracle) move Gana...

Aside from the guy "borrowing" my moniker for Theo in the ORL game thread, it was right on and echoes everything I've said since he's got here. Being a longtime fan of his playing style I was really happy we picked him up, yet I didn't realize how effective he'd be.....and how nasty he dunks!!!

Question is, why couldn't/didn't we get him before now?

BRNC

beagle...Spurs got him (one year) at the start of the season and they have/had the better chance (at the time) of going to the play-offs so he signed with them...but then he was not used and they wanted to cut some money so we got him for a 2nd they'll never collect...:p

Like everyone else, I just figured LB got him as a locker room guy and as filler until the bigs were healthy, and I think even LB is surprised at how well Theo's playing.

I'd rather have him back than Nazr. And I love Nazr.

Theo>Nazr>Tyson>Gana>Lexy

That first four is a damn good playoff rotation...

Tyson has been playing great lately.

Honestly with Gerald and Hughes back on the court within a few games I don't want Nazr at all. I would rather have Tyson and Theo manning the 5 for D. Nazr doesn't give any D.
Now with Diaw scoring again I hope Nazr is the one or Diop who can be moved for nothing to the Kings.
I put it Tyson>Theo>Diop

Plus without Nazr more minutes go to Tyrus Thomas and more minutes to the fun lineup which is so great to watch and works with

Diaw
Tyrus
Wallace
Jackson
Felton

They could even go with the big lineup for a whole game with D.J. Hughes Brown-Henderson. Those are all guys who can play small running ball.
I see Knicks getting Amare and JJ so maybe we get to see a whole game of Bobcats small ball. Tyson is athletic enough to play that style to. He's more athletic then Diaw.

Theos first game with us, the put up a stats sheet for him showing his year in league, averages and what not. In the corner it had "AGE: 36". My wife looks at me and says "36! hes so old, whats he going to be able to do" I had JUST looked back to the game when Theo rises up and blocks a ball into the stands. I looked back at my wife and said "36...."
Now every time he slams one home gets a nasty block or even a goal tending call I look at her and say "36" So we are HUGE Ratliff fans now, old boy getting it DONE ;)
