For the things that aren't specifically player related.
NBA veteran Scheer joining Bobcats (http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_nba/2010/05/nba-veteran-scheer-joining-bobcats.html)
I hear Carl Scheer, the first general manager of the Charlotte Hornets, is joining the Bobcats in some sort of marketing role.
Good move. The Bobcats got their footing in the community by reaching the playoffs and resolving the ownership issue this spring, but there's still a lot of work to do. Scheer knows the NBA and he knows Charlotte.
His experience goes all the way back to the ABA Carolina Cougars, when he was Bobcats coach Larry Brown's general manager. He's worked for the NBA and several franchises, twice with the Denver Nuggets. He got an arena built in Greenville, S.C., and ran Charlotte's minor-league hockey team, the Checkers, as a part-owner.
Since he was LB's first GM can we assume this was influenced by LB? Does this indicate that LB is probably coming back?
Vet management who's done it before has to be a good thing, and esp. those who've done it in Charlotte. The situation isn't the same (first pro team then, etc.), but this at least has to tone down the idea that everyone hired is a FOM (Friend of Mike).
Anyone have more on Scheer?

The Charlotte Bobcats confirmed today the hiring of the former Charlotte Hornets general manager as the team’s senior community affairs adviser. Scheer, 73, brings a lengthy NBA résumé to the job. He has worked for several NBA franchises and is credited with creating the slam-dunk contest at the American Basketball Association’s all-star weekend in 1976.

BOBCATS HIRE CARL SCHEER
Former Cougars, Hornets Exec to Play Role in Community Affairs
May 19, 2010 – Bobcats Sports & Entertainment (BSE) President and Chief Operating Officer Fred Whitfield announced today the hiring of sports industry veteran Carl Scheer as Senior Community Affairs Advisor. A former president and general manager of the Denver Nuggets, Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers, and Assistant to the Commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA), Scheer is most famously known for creating the slam dunk contest at the American Basketball Association's (ABA) All-Star festivities in 1976 after being named The Sporting News' Executive of the Year in 1973 and 1974.
"Carl’s history and ties to Charlotte make him an invaluable addition to our team,” said Whitfield. “His counsel on public affairs will help us fulfill our new owner’s pledge to build a connection between this team and this community."
In addition to his years in professional basketball, Scheer has been heavily involved in minor league hockey over the past two decades as an owner and executive of the Charlotte Checkers and Greenville Grrrowl. In 1998 he oversaw the opening of the BiLo Center in Greenville, and for the past five years he has served as an advisor to the Checkers and the NBA's New Orleans Hornets.
“I am sincerely indebted to Bobcats Sports & Entertainment for believing in me and giving me my 'second act' in professional basketball," said Scheer. "I am humbled by their expression of confidence in me through this invitation to be part of a new era for the NBA in Charlotte, and am grateful to all who have given me the chance to remain in the sports industry by allowing me to be part of their organizations all these years.”
Scheer will be responsible for assisting in the development of community and public outreach strategies, and report directly to BSE Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Pete Guelli.
Bobcats Sports & Entertainment operates the Charlotte Bobcats of the National Basketball Association and the widely-acclaimed Time Warner Cable Arena located in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina. The Bobcats just completed their sixth season in the NBA with the franchise's first postseason appearance.

So why do we need him again?
to keep LB.
I'm sure they sat down at the table and LB said, "Bring in some of my guys and I'll stay." To which MJ replied, "Allllllllllrighty then, glad to have to back next year you old fart."
I almost wonder if this was done without consulting LB but to try to get him to stay.
And Scheer seems to be a legitimately good guy. And someone the people of Charlotte respect.
I think it was a good move to rebuild roads back to the community...esp. the business community...I doubt it has anything to do with LB just a good move by MJ for the long term...

agree, sheer has alot of contacts in the community and is known for his creative ways of marketing a team esp. game presentation, his job is to work the corporate community and continue the upward trend as far as attendance goes, he won't have anything to do with basketball operations either way this is another positive step for the organization

Should have brought him on board in 2004.

He's 73....seriously what kind of impact can he really bring to this franchise? He'll be napping naps while on conference calls. He'll forget the players name, calling out all his kids names till he gets the right one. U know his bed time is probably ten minutes before tip off, so i think he'll miss most of the games

Wow...you totally know my mom don't you? :p
I'm the 4th, so I always hear all the other names before she gets to mine.

I grew up with my grandparents, I had to hear all my uncles names and sometimes the pets name before anyone got to mine

I am more worried about him getting an office with a view of the court and waking up from a nap to yell at the players to get off his lawn.

Perhaps he'll turn into our much needed "shooter/scorer" off the bench. Hopefully he turns out to be good.
Added bonus is that it'll prompt Hendo to work harder on the off-season, as he has more competition for playing time now.

Mine too! My lady's from Milwaulkee and is a Marquette fan. Jerel's nickname is "steals" McNeal. His defense could get him to stick with he team.
The next Raja? Defender with range...just sayin...

The Charlotte Bobcats are interested in Jeremy Pargo, brother of Jennaro Pargo, from the Chicago Bulls. The Bobcats have invited Pargo, playing in his rookie year in Israel for Galil Gilboa to the next Summer League, in Las Vegas. The 24-year-old guard, who has just won the Israeli Super League against Maccabi, has averaged 14.1 points and 4.7 assists per game.

Would that be Larry Brown inviting him, or Rod? Either way, he's better than no one.

Last season's stats of Pargo: http://www.eurobasket.com/player.asp?Cntry=ISR&PlayerID=89252&AmNotSure=1
His FT% is very low for a guard, so is his 3PT%, but 2PT% is good which makes me think that he's a good driving guard. Let's see if it will work for us.

Isma'il Muhammad gets NBA call-up (http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/article/2010/05/31/177811_geelong_sports.html)
GEELONG Supercats import Isma'il Muhammad has been offered the chance of a lifetime by NBA club Charlotte.
The Bobcats owned by the greatest basketballer of all time Michael Jordan have invited Muhammad to attend a four-day trial in Charlotte next month.
The coaching staff will run their eye over him for the chance to win a spot on their roster next NBA season.
Charlotte joined the league in 2004 and Muhammad said he had been "on top of the world" since his agent gave him the good news on Friday.
"I haven't stopped smiling yet," Muhammad said.
"My agent mentioned the trial to me a couple of weeks ago and I didn't really put to much thought into it. I didn't want to get excited in case it didn't come through.
"Then he called me and said the guys were interested in seeing me. They remembered me from Georgia Tech and had seen some DVDs from games here and they liked what they saw, so they've giving me a shot."
The Atlanta native, 26, will fly out to America following Geelong's June 12 clash against Brisbane.
He will spend the week in Charlotte, but will not miss a game for the Supercats as they have a bye that week of the SEABL season. He'll return in time to prepare for Geelong's June 25 home court contest with Knox.
The Bobcats finished fourth in the southeast division of the Eastern Conference this season before being bundled out of the playoffs by Orlando.
Muhammad, who turns 27 in July, said he had previously trialled twice with NBA clubs and wanted to make the most of this opportunity. "You just want to go and play your game," he said.
"I've been in this situation before and obviously it didn't work out. The first time, maybe I was trying a bit too hard and the second time, I don't think I gave myself enough credit.
"I went in there trying to be a role player and fit in but you've just got to be comfortable with your game."DX Profile - Isma'il Muhammad (http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Isma-il-Muhammad-13/)
Best Case: Desmond Mason (if Ish Finds A Shot)
Worst Case: Dahntay Jones
I'm not sure why they've invited a SF with (unless this has changed) a questionable jumper...unless they're not going to keep "Hulk"...

It's quite possible Stevie will get a better offer than the minimum, with all the teams that have cap space. He's a great defensive stopper on a contender.

Charlotte Bobcats hire new ticket exec (http://charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/blog/queen_city_agenda/2010/06/bobcats_hire_new_ticket_exec.html)
The NBA franchise has hired Flavil Hampsten as vice president of ticket sales, replacing Todd Fleming, who left this month.
Fleming came to the Bobcats just over a year ago from the Dallas Cowboys. This month, he accepted a job with Legends Hospitality Management, the sports-concessions and facility-management company jointly owned by the Cowboys and New York Yankees.
Hampsten joins the Bobcats after a year at the NBA’s headquarters as director of team marketing and business operations. That division works with individual franchises on various business issues. Before joining the NBA, Hampsten spent four years as the top ticket-sales executive for the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes.
He inherits a much better situation than Fleming did a year ago.
In February, Michael Jordan paid $275 million to buy the team from Robert Johnson (http://ad.doubleclick.net/imp;v7;j;225541405;0-0;0;38158931;0/0;36642106/36659984/1;;%7Eaopt=2/0/b5/0;%7Eokv=;beh=;pos=t1;vs=sports_business;sz=728x90 ;tile=1;kw=charlotte;dcopt=ist;%7Ecs=l%3fhttp://s0.2mdn.net/1978968/Bank_of_Commercev15.htm?t=10&cT=http%3A//ad.doubleclick.net/click%253Bh%253Dv8/39c2/2/0/%252a/j%253B225541405%253B0-0%253B0%253B38158931%253B255-0/0%253B36642106/36659984/1%253B%253B%257Eaopt%253D2/0/b5/0%253B%257Esscs%253D%253f&l=http%3A//charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/stories/2010/03/29/story5.html). Six weeks later, the Bobcats reached the playoffs for the first time. Those developments helped the deficit-riddled franchise make strides with sponsors and fans, including an 84% season-ticket renewal rate and 1,000 new season tickets sold for next season.
Last month, the Bobcats (http://ad.doubleclick.net/imp;v7;j;225541405;0-0;0;38158931;0/0;36642106/36659984/1;;%7Eaopt=2/0/b5/0;%7Eokv=;beh=;pos=t1;vs=sports_business;sz=728x90 ;tile=1;kw=charlotte;dcopt=ist;%7Ecs=l%3fhttp://s0.2mdn.net/1978968/Bank_of_Commercev15.htm?t=10&cT=http%3A//ad.doubleclick.net/click%253Bh%253Dv8/39c2/2/0/%252a/j%253B225541405%253B0-0%253B0%253B38158931%253B255-0/0%253B36642106/36659984/1%253B%253B%257Eaopt%253D2/0/b5/0%253B%257Esscs%253D%253f&l=http%3A//charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/stories/2010/05/24/story8.html) hired former Charlotte Hornets executive Carl Scheer to build further goodwill (http://ad.doubleclick.net/imp;v7;j;225541405;0-0;0;38158931;0/0;36642106/36659984/1;;%7Eaopt=2/0/b5/0;%7Eokv=;beh=;pos=t1;vs=sports_business;sz=728x90 ;tile=1;kw=charlotte;dcopt=ist;%7Ecs=l%3fhttp://s0.2mdn.net/1978968/Bank_of_Commercev15.htm?t=10&cT=http%3A//ad.doubleclick.net/click%253Bh%253Dv8/39c2/2/0/%252a/j%253B225541405%253B0-0%253B0%253B38158931%253B255-0/0%253B36642106/36659984/1%253B%253B%257Eaopt%253D2/0/b5/0%253B%257Esscs%253D%253f&l=http%3A//charlotte.bizjournals.com/charlotte/stories/2010/05/24/story8.html).
To be sure, much work remains for the six-year-old expansion NBA franchise. The Bobcats were projected to lose as much as $35 million for the 2009-10 season, though that deficit was likely reduced by the addition of corporate sponsors such as US Airways and an uptick in fan interest.
Charlotte increased attendance by 9% in 2009-10, attracting an average of 15,824 per game.

Reports were that the Knicks were offering Wilson Chandler or Toney Douglas for Rudy Fernandez. The Portland reporter just said that it's not happening as Portland has better offers than that.
I'm pretty amazed, but I don't rate Rudy that high.

I would do Wilson for Rudy if I was PDX. Wilson can play!

There are a couple of reasons why they didn't pull the trigger on that deal. The first being that Portland has been doing a lot of work to clean up their image. Wilson just got caught driving around with some weed in his car less than 2 months ago.
Rudy is better player than Chandler too. Not only that, but Batum's upside is significantly greater than Chandler's as well. Chandler's stats are only as high as they are because he's been playing for Knicks. He's shown some signs of being a good player, but he's got a ways to go...
