CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Impending restricted free agent Tyrus Thomas(notes) has made it clear: He wants to stay in Charlotte and sign a long-term deal with the Bobcats.

Thomas says he “definitely” wants to remain with the Bobcats after being acquired in a February trade from Chicago. General manager Rod Higgins said earlier this month it’s likely the Bobcats will offer him a one-year qualifying offer worth a little more than $6 million to make him a restricted free agent.

The 6-foot-10 Thomas averaged 10.1 points and 6.1 rebounds in 25 games with the Bobcats last season. He had 21 points and nine rebounds in a playoff game against Orlando.

Thomas spoke by phone Tuesday from Washington, where he was to receive a Jefferson Award for his community service in the Baton Rouge, La., area.

This is better then great news if we can finally lock down the PF spot for the next couple years. This team has waited 6 yrs for someone. We haven't had one PF worth two dead flies on a windy day.

I dare someone to even mention Diaw :paddle:

Like a fluffy pillow...yes?

As for TT wanting to stay with the Bobcats, I think it's awesome. Now it's time to see whether he can grab the starting spot from Diaw.

lol. That wouldn't be possible, unfortunately. Ammo is a free agent, so it would have to be a sign and trade. Brown might be a FA too..I am not sure. I am all for it.

"GM Rod Higgins making it official they'll make 1-year, $6 million qualifying offer to F Tyrus Thomas"

Good news? or did people want a long term offer? Again suggests we aint getting Ray back

I'm good with the QO. We really didn't get to see a whole lot of him last year. This gives us a chance to see what his actual market value is in the event that other teams make an offer, or if not, we've got a full year to decide if he's good enough to make a long term investment.

Who said we've never had an NBA power forward. We had Melvin Ely.

GOOD...Now trade Stephen Jackson (or some combination of two players...Diaw and somebody) to Minnesota for Al Jefferson, and you'll be straight at SF (Wallace), PF (TT) and Center (Jefferson).

And who will be our back up 4??? we will be back to square one like last year with no second PF we had to play radmanovich there...

We got this tall french dude called Lexi. He'll be our backup 4. If not him, TC has played some 4 back in the day, he or Nazzy could play it.

I think Brown can give us solid minutes as a back up PF. We also need to get Lexi on the floor at some point to find out if he can play or not. I'd rather give those two a look than pay Boris $9 mil to be a back up. Plus, if the proposed trade happened and we got Jefferson, could we not slide him over to the 4 for a few minutes as well?

Edit: Toocool beat me to the punch on Lexi.

Brown would get bullied like the ginger kid in the play ground at the 4

You surely haven't seen UPS play at all this season. When he wants to score, he's very very aggro. He'll dunk it on anything and anyone. He would get bullied in the post, but not like the ginger or the fat kid. He'll certainly fight back, that's for sure.

I really feel like the number one priority for us is to get Tyrus Thomas signed. This is even more magnified in my mind considering our lack of draft picks tonight... Tyrus is a really young player with loads of talent, not to mention he played solid last year and can help us compete with athletic teams at the 4.

I say priority number one only because I am assuming Larry is gonna hang around and coach one more year... we need him to develop these young guys because we have a lot riding on those fellas!

Good news. Now, have to hope no one throws him an offer much higher so we have to match it. Not sure if the Cats will go much higher.

Tyrus seems to be a good guy. I'm thrilled we offered him a chance to stay. Now LB has to pull his head out of Diaws ass

Sounds like TT's interest might grow past the QO.

Hoops world:http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=16676

"Thomas is someone the Knicks have had their eye on for months. He's currently a restricted free agent for the Charlotte Bobcats, but his value is quickly rising above the $6.2 million qualifying offer made by the 'Cats. For instance, the one-dimensional Channing Frye is sitting on a 5-year $25 million offer from the Suns in hopes of getting more from another team. If Frye, Gooden, and Darko are worth nearly the full MLE than the Knicks could definitely justify giving Thomas $7-8 million a year to pry him away from the Bobcats."

Guess we have to hope Tyrus's desire to be here outweighs the lure of more money for the Knicks. Judging from what I've read he seems to have clicked with Larry Brown so hopefully he thinks this is the best place he can propel his career to the next level.

Honestly, if we get to match a 3/24 or 4/32, I'd be thrilled. If he has a good season next year he'd get a lot more.

Remember we're cap strapped.

I put it in the FA thread, but according to Wojo Minny is interested as well. Maybe a trade of an expiring/Tyrus for Al Jeff? Maybe TC/Tyrus for Al Jeff/Sessions?

We are cap strapped, but 8 per is still under the projected LT.

But I'd do Al/Ramon for Tyrus/Nazr/Lexy first.

It is obvious teams with money are going to make a run for TT...too much money and not enough LBL to go around...I think we're going to be the biggest losers from this FA period...I'm not happy at all...

If we gave up a future 1st for a rental of a couple months, I will be sorely disappointed in the FO. That will have proven a foolish move. You dont make such a move unless you are very confident you will sign him long term.

ohara...we both know there are some very "creative" GMs that will make an offer that will be "onerous" to our cap...if we do keep him (and I have my doubts) we'll be saddled with another "interesting" contract...

I'd personally be thrilled with a TC and TT for Jefferson and Sessions. I would normally say it isn't going to happen but it is Minny we are talking about so maybe...

To quote Slam from RGM: "If I can't have Al playing next to Tyson, I damn sure want him playing with T2!"

For Al to really shine. He needs an aggressive defender next to him. That way, he can focus on getting buckets and cover the less apt offensive player on the other end of the floor.

Just read the title of this post, TT wants to stay, we have a good young player who WANTS to be here, he may even reject more money to stay here (i hope) so why would we want to mess with that

Agreed. Remember, its not ALWAYS about money. Yeah most of the time it is, but Tyrus's comments are pretty clear; he wants to be here. If that means taking slightly less, I think he'll do it.
