Yes, I have read that we do not match an offer by Nets, simply re-sign him to a regular contract before anyone else does. Assume that it starts with 6.5 million, and add Dominic McGuire's contract (assume it's minimum, 885k for a 3 year veteran), we already exceed 68 million. There is still a few bucks to offer, however no way can we lure an impact player with that money. All we can do now is unloading Tyson or Nazr for players, especially a starting PG.

As we can see, our current payroll is 74 million. Add Livingston as 3.5 million and McGuire as 1 million, we go to $ 78.5 million. What does that mean? It means the following: Forget all your big dreams about what Dampier's contract can be turned into. No CP3, no Arenas, no other big contracts. I think Dampier will very probably be waived, or maybe we can trade him to an undercap team for one or two players worth 3-4 million total.

The pick owed Bulls is protected
Charlotte Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins just spoke with us about the Tyrus Thomas trade. I asked about the first-round pick they now owe the Chicago Bulls, in addition to the pick they owe the Minnesota Timberwolves (via Denver in the Alexis Ajinca deal).

The earliest the pick could go to Chicago is 2012, since the NBA doesn't allow teams to trade their first-round picks in consecutive years. In addition, there's a sliding scale of lottery protection written into the trade language that starts with the first draft when the Bobcats are eligible to send the pick out.

Higgins didn't go into detail about that protection, but it's good to know that if the Bobcats are still on the bubble between the playoffs and the lottery then, they wouldn't necessarily lose a good pick.
