I hate how people label fans who didnt attend the school "bandwagon fans". I have come to accept the fact that most schools around are going to have a UNC/Duke population. Most of them probably grew up as fans and just couldnt get in, or afford, those schools.

I've been a Tar Heel fan my entire life, and yes that includes the Matt Doherty years. I go to the University of South Carolina because out-of-state tuition for Chapel Hill was to expensive. I guess that still qualifies me as a bandwagon fan?

If you didn't read, it's not his alma mater yet, as he won't be an alum for the next three years.
He grew up a Tar Heel fan (just like me) and both of us will likely never set foot in Chapel Hill as a student.

If you're in a college that isn't UNC and you root for UNC over them thats sad. It's like when the Lakers come to TWC and the arena is flooded with Kobe jerseys. Maybe if your parents went there I could understand, but if you have no real connection to the school and you root for them primarily you are a bandwagon fan.

i mean i live in wilmington and go to unc and i can understand people from ecu or uncw rooting for unc because lets face it those sports programs aren't anywhere near the athletic level, i consider it like being a fan of an MLS team in your area but a bigger fan of some premier team

So if you like a team as a kid, and support them til you die, you're a bandwagoner? Because for whatever reason (grades, cost, location, etc.) you weren't able to be one of the 29,000 students there?

So my parents, who went to a college with no athletic teams, shouldn't be allowed to root for any other school? My grandmother, who never went to college, shouldn't be allowed to cheer on a college team? Seriously?
Or what about the people who graduated from UNCC? Who are they supposed to be a fan of on the gridiron?
You're being a bit narrowminded I think.

I've been a tar heel fan my entire life. My parents became Heel fans from the moment Jordan (a carolina boy) signed to play. Obviously, it wasn't apparent that he'd become the GOAT when he left High School so I guess it was just good luck on their part. Before MJ got to UNC the school wasn't tippity top level anyway so you can't even call them bandwagoners.
From the moment I was born I was a Tar Heel junkie. Basketball, Football, Soccer, you name it. I've endured horrible seasons in all sports (Doherty, Football before Butch) and never left.
After receiving my letter of acceptance from UNC, I went to tour the campus (fell in love) and found out that they don't offer in-state tuition for South Carolina residents like myself so I simply couldn't afford the price of education. If that makes me a bandwagon fan in your eyes, after almost 20 years, then so be it. I'll root for both the Tar Heels and the Gamecocks (my school) until the end. Unless of course they play each other, in which case I'll win either way.
You sure sound bitter for falling into some crappy teams (NCSU and App). I can't say that I blame you, it's not your fault. ;)

If you didn't go to the school whats your fundamental basis for cheering for the team? I cheer for App because its fun talking trash to the students of other teams at home and on the road and watching the guys you see around campus and in class with you go represent you on the field and on TV. I cheer for the Bobcats because I am from Charlotte and I love seeing our city represented and take down the likes of LA and Chicago (Pro is different though, because there way less teams and a wider area of fans is expected). Love seeing my city start to get behind the team. Whats your basis for rooting for the Tarheels? They're good and not annoying like Duke? You aren't a part in the Tobacco Road Rivalry, thats students and alumni only. To me, if you want to be a real fan you have to have a solid purpose/foundation for cheering for that team, if not you are a bandwagoner.

I still have the opportunity to go there (I'm a rising senior in HS) but in all liklihood the cost and a couple other issues will keep me from going. I've been a Heel fan since I started watching college sports, a ton of my family members went there (one of my ancestors was in like the third graduating class) and a lot of my friends are there now, plus a lot of my friends have parents who are alumni and boosters. Is it so wrong for me to want the lead public university in the state I've spent all but 3 years in to win in athletics?
A bandwagoner, by definition, is someone who likes something in the good times, and goes away in the lean times, sports or not. As someone who cheered on John Bunting's Tar Heels, I laugh at that. We're Bobcats fans. That means none of us are bandwagoners. C'mon, son.

The only thing UNC leads in is cheating.
Anyways usually you go to UNC for arts and business, NC State for science and engineering....If you choose the public option.
One things for sure, as a Wolfpack and Bobcat fan, I sure as hell am not a band-wagoner. And when we rock the ACC with our freshman trio, band-wagoners can stay the hell away.
Ps. The worst team in State history beat the FCS champs App State handily my freshman year. LOL

When I say leading, I mean the flagship university in the North Carolina system, a "Public Ivy" and an endowment 1.5 billion more than NC State, which is second in the state with 464 million. Also, UNC has a Nobel Prize winning professor, Dr. Oliver Smythies, and has the best Medical School (arguably) in the Carolinas.

That was the beginning of the Armanti era, 2007-2009 we would have crushed NC State so easily.
edit: scratch that, they beat us 23-10 at home and Armanti only played for like 1 minute. LOL what a powerhouse. the 2007-2009 app team would make NC State look like Division 3

Unc isn't even close to an ivy. They have that huge endowment because everybody in the NC system is so far up their a$$ it's disgusting. They have no need for that big of endowment, spread the wealth around the system, they'll get along just fine without it. Best med school in the carolinas would be duke and it's not close. unc has the best one in the unc system because they will not allow any other of the 15 schools to have one, much like pharmacy. Need to get out from under that fairy blue veil son.

I picked up more UNC girls on campus/around Franklin St. (freaks, all of 'em) in my younger years than at any other college.
Shouldn't that count for something? :g:
I'll put my fanhood of UNC into prespective. For 10 years I rooted for them, then I got accepted to UNCW. In the two years I've been at UNCW my support of the Seahawks has far surpassed the support I ever had for UNC. I realized that I was a "fan" of UNC but had no basis for really rooting for them. Since I've been at UNCW our basketball team has won a combined 16 games, still I would rather watch us get blown out by 30 than watch UNC blow someone out by 30.
If you root for another school that's fine, but I get rather annoyed when I meet people at my school who are sports fans but root for another school and don't give two shits about UNCW. The program hasn't been good in recent years yes, but from 1999-2006 they dominated the CAA, and still would be if our athletic department didn't chase away the best coach we ever had (who just landed the Clemson job I might add). My point here is that despite the recent struggles, the school has had its share of success, obviously not to the degree of UNC, Duke, or State, but the tradition is there.
You can root for more than one team, but in my opinion if you go to a college with an athletics program, you call yourself a sports fan, and you've enjoyed your experience at such college, you should root for them first. Its your school, you should support it.

A) I was referring to the Public Ivy list compiled by Richard Moll in 1985 and then in 2001 by Greene's Guide. UNC-CH is the only school on the list from the Carolinas.
B) ECU has a medical school, and has had one since 1974. Your point is invalid.
C) UNC and Duke both have fine medical schools, as does Wake Forest, but UNC's is ranked higher. I wouldn't know, as I've never been, nor has anyone else here I believe. I think the only man who can settle it is Ken Jeong (Mr. Chow in the Hangover) as he went to PreMed at Duke and got his Dr. at UNC-CH.

Fyi...UNC-CH and NCSU are both flagships schools of the UNC system. There was an agreement made that UNC would have the law and med school, whereas NCSU would have the engineering and vet school. (Back in the day, my highway design proff said that). There used to be engineering at UNC before that agreement. Besides this thread is way off the title of the topic.
