Yes, its a nightmare scenario.
But for the sake of discussion, if you were forced at knifepoint to choose one of these 2 as your starter next season, Who do you pick?

TJ Ford has almost regressed since his first couple of years in the league...
The only thing people can question about Calderon (other than his contract) is his defense - and even then its hard to really attack him for his defense because he's been playing hurt on and off for the last two seasons for a franchise with no concept of team defense. And even with Calderon's injury problems, he doesn't run the risk of having his spine implode like TJ.

Calderon has very low TO in games which was one problem last season we had so that would contribute. Calderon has a great eye for a pass and has been playing constant ball where as TJ Ford hasnt played in a year or so, who knows what state he could be in. Calderon is a better 3 shooter
However i think we could get TJ for less

TJ fairly easily.
1) Caleron is already injured, and the season hasn't even started yet
2) Caleron has 3 years at $27mil before his trade kicker, so his incoming salary is even higher
3) TJ is expiring
4) Did I mention that we'd be on the hook for 3 years and $30mil for Caleron?

don't forget that horrendous contract. :p
And his D does suck that badly. Even all the Raptors' homers on RGM admit that his suckage on the other side of the ball surpasses most all other PGs. He has no lateral quickness and on top of that he half asses it. He folds on the screen almost every time. He also can't stay healthy.
It is TJ fairly easily.
This is like choosing between 2 different kinds of STDs...only you can get rid of 1 after a season.

That's easy
I'd pick Presbyterian Hospital over CMC to stitch up the knife wound I received when I refused to accept either of those options. For two reasons, Presby is a Bobcats sponsor and CMC is an excessively profitible non-profit (getting gouged by the knife is bad enough).

Ford for his contract.
TJ for all the reasons Swedd listed.
Marc Stein seems to think there's no chance Jose comes here.
@STEIN_LINE_HQ (http://twitter.com/STEIN_LINE_HQ) Dampier does becomes eligible Monday to be packaged w/other Bobcats in trades. But I've been firmly told CHA and TOR not discussing Calderon 32 minutes ago (http://twitter.com/STEIN_LINE_HQ/status/24163289787)<LI class=alt>http://a1.twimg.com/profile_images/641970951/twitterProfilePhoto_normal.jpg (http://twitter.com/STEIN_LINE_HQ) @STEIN_LINE_HQ (http://twitter.com/STEIN_LINE_HQ) Getting tweets asking if there's any substance to internet rumbles about a Calderon-to-CHA deal involving Dampier's contract. So in this case:
TJ Ford(syphillis) > Jose Calderon(Herpes)

TJ Ford, because of the contract and better D. Calderon can't defend a fly, heck he couldn't even defend Diop if he was a PG even when Diop has no offense whatsoever.

No way in Hell we are better with TJ than Calderon. Jose is way ebtter than TJ c'mon. Forget his contract Im so sick of that. We aint getting CP3 or any other All Star PG right now and we gotta pay anyway. The only guys that play for cheap are Rookies and reserves. Were not paying these guys anyway. All i care about is how we play because I dont watch them get paid, I watch them shoot, pass and dribble. Let MJ decide whether or not he wants to pay. I trust him.
I chose Ford, worse case he could be traded again as an expiring.

You can't forget about his contract, that is what got us in trouble in the past, not worrying about the $$ in the contract or the length:
See Carroll, which became Diop
See Morrison which just wasted away, add May to that as well
See Okafor, which became Chandler
As MJ said right after he became owner, there would be moves that didn't appear to be basketball related, rather they would be financial moves..that's the reality of pro-sports in small-markets. The best way out of that is making prudent financial decisions when resigning players (not overpaying for Felton, not paying May), in trades (letting Chandler and Ajinca go for a dust chip) and in the draft (which we've been poor at-at best).

I understand the whole thing about not giving bad contracts and that's fine. I just don't see why someone would take TJ Ford over Jose Calderon just because he has an expiring deal. I want to win, not save money.
I dont expect us to make too many bad SIGNINGS financially speaking with MJ in control. Okafor's deal really wasnt too bad considering he averaged a double double for his career and was sort of the face of our team. Carroll's deal was bad but thats the going rate for a great shooting 6th man now a days. Kapono and others have similar deals. The reason we picked up Adam's qual. offer was so we could trade him easier. He was a big expiring for the 2010 FA class.
I just want us to put the best players possible out on the floor...

Neither one is worth a bag of peanuts. Caleron isn't going to make us any better than TJ or DJ would so it makes absolutely no sense to have him on the roster.
Did I mention that he'd be due $30mil over the next 3 years? Did I also mention that LB would call in a hit on him once he (Caleron) gets lit up for 48 points by any guard with ball handling abilities?

Bad hamstring, bad ankle - he plays hurt. Hard to play defense when the best defender on your team is Reggie Evans.
TJ other than his contract is worthless.
The better player by far is Calderon, and people are acting like its their money they'd have to spend on him if he came to Charlotte.

Ammofan, I know what you're feeling, but I don't want Calderon's contract from making us a better team in the near future. With three years left, we have to consider his contract, given that we already have a couple of other guys on the books that don't add much.
I was intrigued by Calderon at the beginning of summer, but I didn't pay enough attention to him this past season. He's got a ton of question marks; acquiring him could be a serious backfire for us.
I'm not even sure Calderon would be that much better with one year contracts.
As others have said, I don't want either guy. I'd rather go with what we have and let Jackson (and Diaw, if we keep him) facilitate more of the offense.

T.J. Ford just because Jose Calderon looks like this creepy substitute teacher I had in high school.
