NBA referees will have more reasons to issue technical fouls next season.

At the referees' annual meeting in Jersey City, N.J., on Thursday, the league announced the guidelines for technical fouls will expand to include "overt" player reactions to referee calls.

Referees have been instructed to call a technical for:

• Players making aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court.

• Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled.

• Running directly at an official to complain about a call.

• Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone.

In addition, referees have been instructed to consider calling technicals on players who use body language to question or demonstrate displeasure, or say things like, "Come on!" They can also consider technicals for players who "take the long path to the official", walking across the court to make their case.

Ron Johnson, the NBA's senior vice president of referee operations, said audience research was a major factor behind the change.

"Our players are more personally connected to fans than any other sports," Johnson said. "We don't have masks. ... There's nothing you can hide on the expression of an NBA players. ... People expect hockey players to be fighting. They expect baseball managers to be kicking dirt on umpires. But that's not our game. That's not what our fans want. They tell us in many many ways and I think we have to adjust to meet the needs of our league and our fans. It's a business."

What is the over/under on the number of T's Jax racks up this season?

Jax is good for about 20 techs this season, and likely 3 ejections for getting 2 in the same game. This is if he tries real hard to control himself.

Dude, this will have a far-reaching impact on the game. Someone like Kobe or D12 violates these new rules at least 10 times per game. I imagine refs will be more likely to actually make those calls on the bad boys like Jax though. If some of the media darlings get thrown out right at the beginning of the season, I would bet these new rules get relaxed in a hurry.
Remember, there is a suspension after 16 and then I think every 2nd tech thereafter is another suspension. 20 sounds about right for Jax though I am sorry to say.

If they follow those rules to the letter of the law then I'll say 20 or more sounds about right.

Hopefully these new guidelines die quickly after just a few games into the season.

These new rules are pathetic. You can't yell out "come on!" anymore? You can't raise your arms? You can't complain, in a civilized tone? Kobe will bitch about a call for an entire quarter and won't get called but I guarantee you just about every time Jack says "that was a dumb call", will get T'd up. Bullshit on so many different levels.

Not to mention that the NBA is killing every bit of emotion in the game. Way back, people were allowed to cuss, yell, push, and whatever they wanted, and fans LOVED IT. they've maid everything so PC it's almost boring.

The last three rules seem directly aimed at Jack, lol.

I don't see how they're possibly going to enforce those as stated, otherwise there won't be anyone to finish the games.

they really are trying to suck every last bit of emotion out of the nba. all thanks to the ron artest melee. think about this...
one of the nba's most iconic images is jordon's shot over craig ehlo at the foul line where he jumps after making it almost kicks ehlo, then does about 5 "air punches"

t him up. cleveland shoots free throws and wins the game!

why not get rid of these stupid rules and instead of charging a tech charge a personal foul for excessive complaining or showing up a ref after a call. tech's don't mean anything, personal fouls do.

Within reason, Jack isn't nearly as bad as a lot of the superstars (Lebron, Kobe, Dwight, all the Celtics, DWade, Tim Duncan, etc)

I also think (and I sure as hell didn't this when we traded for Jack) that Jack can control his emotions and will actually bait the opponents into getting more technicals because he's in their heads.

On the BCP Nation's responsibility, this means we have to be even more vocal at the Cable Box so that the ref's get their appropriate unsolicited feedback when they miss calls.

I think Jackson will stay out of the suspension threshold (unless we've solidified our playoff seed and he's going to sit out a few games anyway...then that poor ref my boot him in pre-game).

Jordan however..will probably be booted before Christmas arrives.

I sense Jordan, LB and Cpt Jack sharing a lot of quality time in the locker room. All three are passionate people and love the game. What they're doing is taking the passion out of it, trying to turn them into robots or something.

I think Jax and most players will be able to adjust to this.

The NBA sends me surveys on various things and this was one they sent recently. They had various videos of player reactions that the survey taker had to judge if they would give a tech or not. None of the videos were something I would give a tech to, but each one was a grey area...complaining about a call to an offical while play goes on, slapping of the arm to let the ref know they think they got fouled; things of that nature. I don't think they're that bad, but there are a massive number of people who do, who see it as whining and self-centered and consider it a turn-off. I understand why the league is doing this but just hope they don't go overboard.

While Rasheed Wallace holds the record in a season (41...thank you Wikipedia), I'm guessing about 30 this season.

Yeah, none of those videos they showed were worth a second look, but apparently they're techs now. It's retarded.

Yes! I actually think this could benefit Jax and us a great deal. For one, if Jax knows that arguing a call can only hurt us (it used to be that arguing a call my net you another later in the game), then he'll be less inclined to argue and focus more on the game. My biggest criticism of Jax last year was falling out of the game, even while the team was in transition, in order to make a point to the ref. Jax is more sly than we give him credit. This could be a good thing.

Just in case, though, we need to make a sign that says "WE GOT U, JAX" to hold up when refs make bad calls. He may need some support.

I think you're going to see a ton of T's in the preseason in an attempt to set expectations. However, when the regular season starts, I bet they tone it down big time.

The frustrating part will be determining how the refs are going to call games, as you know it will slide on some nights more than others.

I think an even more frustrating part will be watching Jack get called for technicals and then watching Kobe or another superstar do the exact same thing and not be called for it.

The cost of getting T'd up more than doubled under the new escalation scale for the upcoming season. I know these guys are rich, which means by the time they reach #16 they will have been fined $45K and on #15 they'd lose 1/82 of their salary + another 5k.

Players and coaches will now be docked $2,000 for each of their first five technical fouls. The costs rise to $3,000 for the next five, followed by $4,000 for Nos. 11-15. Starting at 16, players are suspended one game for every two technicals, along with $5,000 for each.
