View Full Version : Training Camp
Training camp starts next week, and while this is exciting for everyone, its particularly exciting for me since the team is coming to UNCW where I go to school. I'll definitely be going to the end of camp scrimmage so I'll write up some observations for all of you on that, but since I am involved with the men's team and our head coach is good friends with MJ, I'm going to see if they'll let any of the players and myself in on practice. I highly doubt it'll happen, LB had everything closed door 2 years ago, but who knows. At the very least I hope I get to hold the door for one of them again like I did 2 years ago when I held it for Emeka Okafor.
Anyways, I guess we can use this thread for all things training camp related.

Notes from Wilmington today from bonnell: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/09/27/1723017/nba-too-much-action-jackson.html
WILMINGTON - Fiery Charlotte Bobcats guard Stephen Jackson made a film debut of sorts this fall; he was Example 1 in the NBA's video to teams, warning them about "overt gestures" that would now be cause for technical fouls.
"I didn't know I was making my debut," Jackson joked Monday at media day. "It will be an adjustment, but it won't be a big deal. I won't make it a big deal."
The league is outlawing things like incredulous arm-waving or a player slapping himself to mimic what he thought was a foul. Jackson shrugged it off, but teammate Gerald Wallace, also known to vividly make a point to a ref, saw this as overkill.
"I just feel like they've taken a lot of the emotion out of the game," Wallace said. "Things happen in the heat of the moment. I think when something happens in the heat of the moment, that should be taken into consideration, instead of just defining everything by the rule book."
Coach Larry Brown says he understands why the league is toughening the standard on technical fouls, in part because basketball is such an intimate sport, compared to football or baseball.
"Baseball they have hats on and you're 1,000 feet away. Football, they have helmets on," Brown said. "Everything we do, kids and parents see it. We've all got to make sure we do better."
HOME INVASION? A home invasion occurred over the summer at a house Jackson was renting in Charlotte. Jackson revealed Monday he's been going through a divorce, and questions whether the crime his wife described actually occurred.
"To this day, there's been no proof of anyone breaking in, so my attitude is it didn't happen," Jackson said. "I was going through a divorce situation with my wife at the time, so there were a lot of emotionally-different things going on.
"Nothing was stolen, no breaking-and-entering. If it did happen, I thank God that she's OK. If not, then I'm ready to put it behind me."
DIAW: NO PROBLEM: Bobcats forward Boris Diaw is anything but high-strung. His name came up twice this off-season in trade rumors -- first in a mid-summer deal with Toronto and more recently in the four-team deal centered on Denver Nugget Carmelo Anthony.
Diaw said no one should worry about him being distracted. He's been traded twice already, and sees it as part of the gig.
"If you don't have any control over it, why would you worry about it? There's nothing I can do but wait to see what will happen," said Diaw, who would end up with the Utah Jazz if this deal is consummated.
Diaw contacted his agent to see what he knew, but mostly gets his information like any fan: "I just hear what they say on Sportscenter n that it comes down to Carmelo Anthony deciding whether to make a long-term deal."
KWAME RELIEVED: Kwame Brown will miss at least the next 4-6 weeks of practice and games with a sprained left ankle, the same ankle that needed surgery a couple of years ago.
Brown said, based on how the joint swelled Thursday, he and the organization feared far worse.
"It's the fastest I've ever seen an ankle swell up," Brown described. "It was like somebody put a tennis ball in my ankle as soon as they took my shoe off. That swelling made everyone nervous."
HIGH ON MCGUIRE: Larry Brown loves lump-of-clay guys n someone with high, but unrealized potential he can develop. Sounds like he's found one already:
"Dominic McGuire is going to surprise a lot of people. I know nobody knows about him, he hasn't played, but he's going to be a big part of our team," Brown said of the 6-9 forward.

I know everyone is excited to see shaun Livingston this year, me included. However is anyone worried that we have invested $ 3.5 mil for the next 3 years in someone who is still affected by this injury so badley, i mean i thought since he played for the Wiz last year he was healthy now, but if he is needing an ice pack all the time then there is no way he can be our starting PG.
Also DJ looks pretty ripped

Well it may be just a routine. One of our walk ons this year had knee surgery last season but even after the knee was good to go he still iced it. Maybe Liv is doing the same thing. At the same time, Liv's injury is probably as severe as it gets with knee injuries.
And to your DJ point, yes, he looks much stronger.

Bonnell's random thoughts for today:
http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_nba/2010/09/ten-things-bobcats-style.html
Ten things worth noting from the evening scrimmage in the first day of Charlotte Bobcats training camp:
1. Former Wizards and Sixers coach Eddie Jordan was hanging out on court for both Tuesday practices, even working with Shaun Livingston on his shot at the end of the evening session. The Bobcats say he's here as a visitor, and that's plausible. Remember, Larry Brown spent a ton of time at other coaches' practices after the Knicks let him go, and said it was really educational. It's not as if there's an open staff position. Just kinda interesting.
2. For those of you preoccupied with starting Tyrus Thomas: He's second-team, behind Boris Diaw, but gets some reps with the anticipated starters (D.J. Augustin, Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace and Nazr Mohammed). I've said it before, I'll say it again: If Diaw is here, he should start, but spend many of his minutes in positions other than power forward.
3. The apparent second-team was Shaun Livingston, Gerald Henderson, Derrick Brown, Thomas and Gana Diop. However shooting guard Matt Carroll and combo-forward Darius Miles gets some reps with this group.
4. There were moments -- brief ones -- when Brown experimented with Mohammed and Diop being in the game together. I doubt you'd see that much in games, but it's good they're practicing what they might do if the opposing team goes super-big. (And the options multiply when Kwame Brown recovers from that ankle sprain).
5. I was in my right mind when I wrote the following: Diop looks in good shape. He said at media day he lost 15 pounds over the summer, and he ran the court well throughout the scrimmage. Miles and Diop hooked up on a pretty lob pass-to-dunk almost immediately in the 5-on-5 session.
6. I'm glad the Bobcats brought Miles to camp, and he can still play. But, barring a bunch of injuries, I don't see how he'll make the team. Right now, he's a luxury without a guaranteed contract. He can't practice all the time because of his knee. He's now more a finesse player than an explosion player. I wish for his sake there was a team in more dramatic need for his talent because he's still good enough to make an NBA roster. Maybe just not this one.
7. To those of us who travel for a living, "Up in the Air'' is hilariously dry wit (though the book is better than the movie). I don't know why anyone else would get it.
7. (Do-over, because that wasn't about the Bobcats): Javaris Crittenton is intriguing, both in talent and in skill. That will get him tryouts forever. But I'm not sure he does any one thing well enough to make this team. He's not quite a point guard in approach, nor gifted enough as a shooting guard, to make a living as a combo guard. In other words, he's no Flip Murray.
8. The new kid, Division II guy Matt Rogers, is fun to watch in a Jake Voskuhl way. He's just skilled and long-limbed enough to mess people up. In fact, if he develops Jake's hockey-goon mentality, this is how his career would go: Two months in the D-League, a call-up somewhere (Timberwolves?), then five one-year contracts with five team, after which you retire rich.
9. If Brown says Dominic McGruire is a sleeper, then he's a sleeper. But I'll warn you: The guy has one ugly-looking jump shot.
10. Some of you say Matt Carroll and D.J. Augustin are the only dependable long-range shooters on this team. if you're saying Augustin is better than everyone else, then fine, but don't pair them: Carroll would undress Augustin in a shooting contest.

With L Brown not likeing our talent at center . I think Rogers has a chance to make the team. He does what our other centers can't do . He runs the floor well . Alters shots , defends well outside the paint . He all so has a nice jumper whitch would spread the floor for Wallace and JAX .
I just have a feeling he comes out of camp with a roster spot . THOUGHTS

Videos with Nazr, Gana and the rookie Collins, along with a write-up from Rochinski on http://www.bobcatsbreak.com/?p=2653
some of the exerpts:
STEPPING UP
There is no question that Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson are the leaders on this team, but with Raymond Felton having moved on, it’s time for D.J. Augustin to take on a larger leadership role. Two days into camp, Jackson is already seeing progress in the third-year point guard.
“He’s taken that leadership in the huddles when we’re going over plays. He’s stepping up and speaking,” said Jackson. “This wasn’t the same D.J. last year, so by that, it’s showing us that he wants to be good at this role and is going to take the challenge. That’s all me and Gerald are asking him to do – to be confident about himself and lead this team.”
DUNK OF THE NIGHT
For the second-straight night Gerald Wallace left a lasting impression on a camp newcomer. After nearly jumping over Darius Miles on Tuesday, Wallace drove the center of the lane and threw down a one-handed jam over rookie center Matt Rogers.
SPECIAL APPEARANCE
It was great to see University of North Carolina great Dean Smith in attendance at Wednesday’s night session. Prior to camp, Brown mentioned how he was hoping Smith could make it to Wilmington. I know it means a lot to him considering what a huge part Smith has played in the man and the coach Brown has become.
INJURY UPDATE
Tyrus Thomas was held out of both of Wednesday’s practices with a right ankle sprain, as was Eduardo Najera (hernia) and Kwame Brown (ankle). Sean Livingston (knee) and Darius Miles (knee) both missed the morning session but took part in the evening practice.

Only one practice today in Wilmington...3 videos (DJ, TT and Rookie Collins talking about his hazing).
http://www.bobcatsbreak.com/?p=2660
Best line in Rochinski's blog:
one thing has become evident to me. There are three guys out here right now who appear to be playing on a level above everyone else. That’s not to say the other guys aren’t busting their humps, but Gerald Wallace, Stephen Jackson and D.J. Augustin are bringing it to at least the portions of practice that the media is allowed to watch every day. There is no doubt that these three are ready to take this team to that next level and are trying to bring their teammates along with them.
It’s a role that’s different for Augustin as he enters his third year.
“As a point guard, (Head) Coach (Larry Brown) wants me to be vocal and talk to the players on and off the court to help everybody out,” he said. “If I have to get out of my shell and do that, then I’m going to have to do it. I’m a shy guy, but on the court I have to turn it off and turn it on. I just have to be loud and vocal to make sure everybody hears me.”

Same theme in article in the observer...DJ's becoming a vocal leader at Training Camp. Earning Capt Jack's praise should be seen as a big accomplishment:
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/09/30/1729573/augustin-morphing-into-bobcats.html
exerpt:
Augustin says he takes no comfort in Brown saying he'll be given every opportunity as this team's starter. He's more concerned with earning teammates' trust.
"I'm going into this training camp not thinking I'm getting anything,'' Augustin said. "I want to earn anything I get, in minutes or anything. I think my teammates respect that.''
Jackson does:
"You can't teach guys to lead; it's just in you from when you're born. But D.J. wants to be good, wants to help this team, wants to be a leader. Anything we need him to do to be successful, he's going to do that.''

Just watched most of the videos on the Bobcats page, here are some thoughts (sorry for the length):
Really interesting that LB compared McGuire to Gerald Wallace and said he's going to work on turning him into the same type of player he is. That would be fantastic.
In general, LB seems really "somber". I think this year has the potential to go really sour if we start the year badly and his attitude doesn't get better
Tyrus made a comment about training camp being "intense as he expected it" was funny. Makes me wonder how tough LB really is compared to other coaches
Sherron isn't fat. The dude is just SWOLE. Think Jameer, or any current day Running Back
Shaun won't ever be a starter. He can't go through two-a-days so I have doubts that he'll be able to handle the starting load for long stretches. I'm sure that has something to do with our unwillingness to trade DJ
Diop might be a bit of a surprise this year, he's lost a lot of weight (20-25) and seems to be impressing LB some
LB says he LOVES second chance players, saying "I don't think it gets any better than that" since they're so willing to play hard and do the right thing.
LB has major man crushes on Crash, Jack, Boris, and McGuire
Apprently Darius doesn't do a damn thing, at all
Matt Rogers being in camp is a total favor
LB saying a lot of DJ's slump last year had to do with him not being healthy until the end of the year, continuing to say that he has his confidence back
Boris sounds like such a doofus
Crash looked good in BP for the Knights--hit a couple homers
LadyCat Lacey is BEYOND delicious

Bonnell's notes from Saturday's practice. Looks like no Hendo or Diop for ND22 to see during Saturday's scrimmage:
A couple of quick notes off Saturday's practice at Charlotte Bobcats training camp (there is no evening session today):
-- Gerald Henderson suffered a strained left hamstring. They're calling him day-to-day. I suspect he won't play in Sunday's public scrimmage at UNC-Wilmington, as a precaution.
-- Gana Diop left camp Saturday when his wife went into labor back in Charlotte. This will be the Diops' first child, I'm told.
-- I just heard Brevin Knight will do television work this season for the Memphis Grizzlies, so he won't be back as the Bobcats' radio analyst. Looks like play-by-play man Scott Lauer will go solo on game broadcasts on WFNZ.
