View Full Version : Bobcats Converting More of Team Store into Jordan Boutique

I just saw this pop up in my twitter feed and I found it quite interesting. As most fans are probably aware, the Bobcats Fan Store is mostly Bobcats apparel with a corner devoted to strictly Jordan Brand apparel, including hats, t-shirts, shorts, etc. According to the Sport's Business Journal, the Jordan part of the store will be expanding to encompass nearly half of the store.

The Jumpman logo leaps to center stage this season at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. Jordan Brand merchandise, the high-end line of sports apparel owned by Nike and named for Michael Jordan, owner of the Bobcats, will fill almost half the redesigned team store at the NBA arena, Bobcats …
I do not have access to the rest of the article, but I just created a free trial account. As soon as that goes through, I'll post the rest of the article. If someone is already a member, feel free to post the rest. https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=article.preview&articleid=67163

Anyway, I'm all for this. Jordan Brand apparel may be expensive (it is) but it's also popular. And, if they start selling Jordan shoes, that just sweetens the pot (especially since that's a passion of mine). I think this could be a smart way to find more revenue streams. Anyone have any thoughts?

They should sell Bobcat themed Jordans and NBA 2K11 with MJ in a Cats uni on the front.

The only reason this took so long is because Michael didn't want to push him self to far forward while he was a part owner or right after he took over last year.
Jordan Brand is the best selling 'non designer' 'named' line of shoes and apparel in the world.
Capt. Jack, DJ, and Crash are all on Team Jordan,
and he OWNS the store!

Ya, I would love to see some more Jumpman+Bobcats tie ins.

I'm liking that idea alot. Its a good way to bring in more revenue for the Bobcats.

Yea and NBA 2K11 with MJ in a Cats uni would fly off the shelves because it would only be available in the Shop here in Charlotte! :D

Right now, all player exclusive shoes are either released in limited quantities at Footlocker House of Hoops or kept player exclusive and not released at all. IF Jordan can determine their would be a lot of money made in releasing the Wallace exclusive or Jackson exclusive or DJ exclusive colorways of already popular models he will; and the best part is their is plenty of money to be made.

This is a smart move, if nothing else fairweathered fans will tweet about how they love our giftshop as they sit in the nosebleeds to cheer on 'their' Lakers or Heat or whatever team gets hot this year.

CHARLOTTE FLIGHT!

We need to make the switch to the Flight next season....

My worry is that if you type almost any NBA or NFL teams name into Google they are in the top 5 results (even Thunder and Magic work) If we go with Flight then we will be mixed in with with Expedia, Orbitz and the airlines.....

I vote no on the Flight for selfish reasons... FlightPlanet.com (http://flightplanet.com/)is already taken :banghead:

I think once Flight becomes associated with an NBA team (much like Magic and Thunder), it'll be at the top of the Google results no problem. Even the very small minor league baseball team Greenville Drive are on page 2 when you only type in "Drive".

Yea I agree....It wouldnt be an issue. The only reason the things that come up are Expedia and airlines, is because there is no team called the Flight.

The only issue with the name Flight is that it sucks.

I don't mind the Jordan merchandise taking up more room - it's obviously a popular seller (for people that can afford it, unlike myself). He's the face of the franchise, so go for it.

Please, let's not turn this into a Bobcats re-naming thread. As for posting the article, my first free trial account was rejected for some reason but I applied for another one using a different email.

If I remember correctly, there were a group of names that were voted on in the Observer and Bobcats won

Either way, we're called the Cats more now than anything else. And it fits better than some inanimate object like "Flight" (Names like Thunder, Magic, Heat, Jazz, all suck). Especially now that we're finally beginning to have an identity.

Changing the name isn't going to happen. MJ would have to announce it 25 months prior to the season he wanted to change it. So that would mean the earliest he could change the name now is the 2013-14 season (do you think merchandise sales would take a dive during that time period)?

See NJ nets article, from their website confirming the 25 month requirement.

http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2010/08/nets_file_paperwork_to_changin.html

Any NBA team with the intention of changing its name, logo or uniform must apply to the league 25 months before the start of the season in which it intends to unveil the change. The final decision rests with the NBA’s 30-member Board of Directors.
As of right now, no specific change has been detailed in the application

I think the whole Jumpman or Team Jordan or whatever you want to call it is a great sell. It probably will open up to a bit more than game-day sales seeing as it's on the epicentere side of the arena and whatnot. Plus, if that's your style, why not buy it there rather than a dept store or sporting goods place. PS, went to a Dicks up here in the Raleigh area....no, NO Bobcats gear whatsoever. Any shade or shape of Tarhole or Dook you want is there and even a bit of 'Canes stuff but nothing for the only NBA franchise in the next 5 states. Sidebar: While I'm griping (oh BigCat you never gripe, au contraire), I was looking into 'Canes tickets, just to check it out. Cheapest I found on Ticketmaster were $30ish. To watch Canadians and dudes from Minnesota skate? I think i'll drive the 2.5 hours (used to be 10 mins) to TWCA!

Yeah, you can't find Bobcat stuff anywhere outside of Charlotte. Pretty crazy.

Well it seems SportsBusinessJournal.com has denied my free account again for whatever reason. If someone else could try, I'd appreciate it. I really want to see what the article says

I wore a Bobcats shirt last week when I went to the fair in Winston-Salem. I had two people ask me if I was from Charlotte. It was weird, sort of like you have to be from Charlotte to be a fan. Somehow the organization has to reach out to other areas of the Carolina's.

You are looking at it all wrong dorklord.... they knew who the 'cats were and where they played!
I wore my Bobcats hoodie up in New York last year and had several people ask me what college they played for ;(

Thank you. It's just like the people who want to name the team the Royals...KC would be a little unhappy with that.

Correct!

Also, a flyer is a piece of paper stapled to a telephone pole.

I totally agree. I prefer Bobcats by a long shot. At least the name Bobcats is not a name based on an action or inanimate object but it is a name based on an actual living thing. I like a few teams who are named after actions or sounds but still I prefer names like Bobcats, Hawks, Grizzlies, Bucks..etc..etc..
