PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee Friday and will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season, the Trail Blazers announced this evening.

Dr. Richard Steadman will perform the surgery with assistance from Trail Blazers orthopedic surgeon Dr. Don Roberts at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo.

Oden, 22, has been sidelined since fracturing his left patella in a Dec. 5, 2009, game vs. Houston. A recent MRI showed damaged cartilage to the surface of his femur, and his current injury is unrelated to the fractured left patella.

Oden previously underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee Sept. 13, 2007.

He holds career NBA averages of 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 1.43 blocked shots in 82 games over parts of two seasons from 2008-09.

Well lets see he'll miss 3 season's worth of games in 5 seasons, I think that beats even Gilbert Arenas. Maybe they can hit up the NBA insurance, maybe the bobcats will trade for him?

Its a sad situation. It sounds ridiculous now, but if not for the injuries he could have been the next Patrick Ewing.

I cannot call him a bust. Everyone has their own definition of a bust. I call it one when it has to do with the player simply sucking at the NBA level ( ala Morrison, Kwame) or if they do something stupid to ruin their career like drugs or a drunk driving accident or something. I cannot call someone a bust because of on the court injuries. That is just plain bad tragic luck. Oden's size and athleticism reminded me a ton of Dwight Howard. When you have a talented Center like that, you have to take him #1 as Portland did, even if you think the next player(Kevin Durant) might be a very good scorer. It was just plain bad luck for Oden and Portland. I dont give a flip for the Portland franchise, but I do hate it for Greg Oden. He's a good kid. I hope that even though this is a microfracture surgery on each knee now, that he is somehow able to be at least a productive player for a few year and make some good money. But I dont see him ever being the star so many thought he would become, and that is due to 2 bad knees.

1) Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan wasn't a bust?

2) Ammo had a pretty major injury too, how come he doesn't get that benefit?

3) Oden's already made more than anyone on here, so he's fine, unless that dong of his gets him into Shawn Kemp status.

That's very true. But that's not what I'm saying. Bowie never lived up to expectations. Yes, that was because of injuries, but that pick was effectively worthless for PDX. He was a bust.

OK Teej. I get what you are saying now. It goes to the very first sentence in my original post. Just different definitions of "bust". You count injuries where I dont. I am sure a great many people agree with your definition.

Actually no, that's not true. Hakeem (Akeem back then) was understandable because he was a highly touted big man, and anybody knows you go with the big man over the wing. However, Bowie was far, FAR from a consensus favorite over Mike. The reason they took Bowie was twofold--because they had drafted Drexler the year before and because franchise player Bill Walton's feet fell apart, so they figured that (even though Clyde didn't have a very good rookie year) that they'd go with the big man over the guard. The problem was that Bowie wasn't even that good in college. His freshman year was 12/8, sophomore was 17/9 and didn't play for the next two full years due to injury. He kept eligibility and came back as a 5th year senior to average 10/9.

Just an aside...but Swedd mentions (correctly o'course) that one of the reasons PDX passed on Jordan was because they had Drexler, which makes that one of their biggest "DOH!" moments even tho Drexler was pretty darn good in his own right.

Even tho MJ was the GOAT...is that better or worse than them trading back from Chris Paul & Deron Williams for Martell Webster because they had Sebastian Telfair?

I don't really feel bad for this guy. He's rich and has a huge dick. I think he'll be okay.
