Who actually runs the North Pole?

If I had the means to do it, could I truck it on up there and build a weatherproof castle to live in without any other countries hassling me? Would I have to pay taxes? If so, to what country?

Could I name myself Mayor, Governor... Even President of the North Pole?

and yes, I realize that I could google or wikipedia this, but I'm sure your answers will be much more entertaining.

so go ahead and enlighten me.

I heard a fat man that only works one day a year runs the North Pole.

The real problem is that there is no land at the north pole.... it is all ice. And if the global warming alarmests are to be believed you would soon need a floating castle. ;)

( Roeal answer is Canada and Russia have a small 'cold' war going over the pole. Canada planted a flag in the ice, Russia planted one on the sea floor ;)

I swear this North Pole question popped into my head this morning on my way to grab some breakfast. I guess these weird thoughts were the result of too much turkey the previous day.

And If Russia and Canada go to war over the North Pole, my money is on the guys that don't make maple syrup.

I had a similar, if less ambitious, question pop into my head this morning. It also deals with ice.
Why is it that ice floats in water?
Especially if the ice is made from the same water as the water. It seems like the ice, which is colder and, thus, more dense, should be heavier than the water. BUT IT ISN'T. This blows my mind. Help!

I believe that it is because of water displacement... the same reasons that giant heavy ocean liners avoid sinking.

ice is less dense than water. it has to do with the molecules "spreading" away from each other at freezing temps. here is a ref that sums it up better.

Dumb Question: Is your bladder like a big bag or is it more like a sponge? Yes, I slept through most of my biology classes.

My next dumb question. I was at a health food store and bought some "organic" raisins.
Wouldn't all raisins be organic?

Definition of organic is so far beyond true "organic", all they have to do is say "it has preservatives" or "it's been sprayed with pesticide" and it's no longer organic. My question is, if you thought all raisins were organic, why'd you spend more on ones that said so?

Well, in this case I didn't realize they were labeled as organic until I got them home. At the time I just saw the raisins, thought about my expanding waistline and tossed them in the basket as a healthy snack.

I recommend dried cherries instead of raisins (grapes). The health benefit is there, but they taste much better.

Craisins are good, too.

Craisins are good, too.

cherries and cranberries are better than raisins. they have more antioxidants. in order for them to be called organic they can't be grown with pesticides, fertilizers etc that are not considered organic.

Q: Why does my dishing washing detergent have real lemons scent, but the lemonade you buy in resturant is made with artificial flavoring? :g:

Because less lemon is required for a scent then would be for a drink?

My next dumb question: Why are 90% of the commenters over at charlotteobserver.com so angry? They can have a story about cute bunny rabbits on easter and the majority of the comments will be from people who are pissed off about it.

Happy people dont feel the need to push the Reply button. We read the article and move on. Angry people have to yell and throw a tantrum. There are a few people like that everywhere.. even here on BCP ;)
How long does the registration email take from Panthers Planet?

Another dumb question just popped into my mind.

Why is it not OK to use yelling, screaming and profanity in order to teach someone to be a particle physicist, lawyer or brain surgeon but it is OK to yell, scream and curse in order to teach someone how to play football or basketball?

:g:As Coach, you want the kids to learn and grow and win a game against their peers, so motivating them to exert energy is required.

...If you mess with the Physicist student he could get you back by blowing up your house, the law student could (after becoming a lawyer) hurt him/herself breaking into your house and sue you for mental torture and the brain surgeon student..well...if anyone ever has a saw & blade that close to my brain, I'd like him/her to only have great memories of me as a teacher.

I'll buy those answers. It was just another one of those odd questions that popped into my head as I was driving down the road this morning.
