View Full Version : And Derrick Brown...

Last night was the night that the Bobcats Planet UPS Faithful have all been waiting for...
And he let us all down :D . We've been complaining about his lack of PT all year... and not only was he Outplayed by not only McGuire... but Najera as well. Being a Xavier fan converted into a Bobcats fan... it hurts even more for me. This was his chance to put together a good performance and prove he deserves PT, even with Jack & Wallace in the mix.
Seems like he is on a short leash with Silas as well. If the team isn't running, he isn't very helpful. It's like 4 on 5 in the half court. Sure, his put-back dunks are nice... but at this point his slashing or just shooting aren't very effective. Not asking him to turn into a LeBron like driver for Durant like shooter.... but he needs to show the ability to do at least one of them somewhat well.
Let's hope for a rebound performance in our next game.

One game is all Derrick Brown has ever had - against Indiana earlier this season. Henderson has done more with less.
Dude can't rebound, defend, shoot, pass, move with intelligence/purpose... if he's not dunking, he's bringing NOTHING to the game. At least Henderson looks like he belongs on one end of the floor and seems to look like he has an idea of what he should be doing on the other. Derrick Brown played some of the ugliest NBA ball I've ever seen for the first few minutes of his game against Minnesota last night. He needs to wake up and realize that he's not going to make a living on nothing but putback slams - tip the ball yourself and get the rebound instead of trying to throw it down on Darko, put two hands on the ball and stop letting people clown you, move your feet on defense if nothing else, shoot with some confidence... Diop is more ready to take shots than he is.
Summer league doesn't mean anything - ask Quincy Douby and Tierre Brown.
He sucks and he's taken a step backwards since last season.

As soon as i saw DY's name on this thread, i knew the exact tone it was going to be in....i was right.
derrick brown is not very good right now, maybe ever, and should not be considered a "core" player.
And now you know why I said LB was right for playing Dom over UPS, as much as I got screamed at for that...

Both Derrick Brown and Gerald Henderson are just works in progress. Don't expect much from them at this point. These guys have lost a lot of time and are just now starting to get a chance under Silas. So while all of you bitch and complain just know that by the end of the season both players will be playing a whole lot better. They may not live up to your expectations but I doubt that matters to the Bobcats front office. Does either of these guys deserve our praise? NO!! They don't deserve our derision and venom at this point either. McGuire may not have been known to most of us prior to this season but he was an NBA veteran and logged his fair share of minutes. Najera is actually a better player than most of you realize. As a Nuggets fan I watched Najera play more than solid for the Nuggets and the guy hustles his ass off when he is given the freedom to do so.
At the end of the day I will reserve judgment on our two young players till at least after the All Star break. When they have played some solid minutes for more than a half dozen games I will feel they will be worthy of some ridicule or praise. NOT NOW!!! I am done defending them after this. Have at them boys. I know that the struggles of our two young players are far from the problem for the Bobcats. Silas has not had enough time to instill his personality or coaching skills onto the players. I reserve my judgment for the whole team and Silas for a while longer. Regardless I think the stink of losing will be hard to overcome. I don't think we are the talentless hacks most of you think we are but I realize that chemistry is a problem. If you are frustrated that there have been no trades I can understand but MJ and Silas are not ready to pull the trigger. I am sure that if things look back leading up to the trade deadline there will be a trade or trades.

^My sentiments exactly. It's one game as a starter for crying out loud, GEEEEZ some people are quick on the trigger. UPS has played some brilliant basketball in his short career here as a Bobcat, one lousy game from him as a starter y'all nail him to the cross.
I aslo think Najera should definitely be getting regular minutes from here on out, i've watched him play when he was in Denver coming off the bench. Good IQ, hustles hard, plays hard, rebounds well, makes good decisions.

Oooooook, this isn't a discussion about what he does well. My point was why are we so quick to turn on the guy after his first start in the NBA in his 2nd year. I can tell you one thing he does well other than dunking, he actually catches the ball on alleys *ahem* Henderson. There, there's your one thing, well actually 2 if you take teej's thing into account.

lol... I defended Alexis of all people.
Derrick Brown has shown less improvement and done less with more floor time than any of our other rookies under LB. I typically hate the Stephen Grahams and LDM III Es of the team because they generally take the minutes away from our younger guys, but I've never been happier to see a no-name scrub relieve a young player of their duties quite like I was when McGuire came in a got Brown off the floor.
Most players can do something. Derrick can't even LOOK like he knows what he's doing when he doesn't have a clear lane to the rim with no dribbling necessary. He had a decent game against Indiana last year and a somewhat surprising showing against them again this year - but unlike the rest of the young guys, he's actually had floor time.
Hell, even Sherron Collins knows what he's doing on court. Yes, Sherron Collins is terrible at almost everything he attempts, but at least he has a general idea of what it is he's supposed to be doing. Derrick Brown? What? What's he doing? Is he looking for another putback? Is he going for another alley? The NBA isn't the And 1 open run. Physically, he's got all the tools to be a very good player. Mentally, he reminds me of a 6yr old playing NBA Live 2004 on Rookie.
Henderson's drops were probably the only two of his entire life... at least he did something outside of those missed dunks that night. Whats Brown doing when there's no wide open lane?

I'm a known Derrick Brown mark, so I shouldn't say much. This homer didn't even get home in town to watch the 1st quarter, when he actually played!

Brown saw action in 57 games last year and in another 31 this year so how can you say he never got to play until Silas came to town?
In those 88 games, he's scored in double figures only 6 times and pulled down more than five rebounds only 4 times.

Even though I started this thread... double digit scoring games isn't really a fair knock on him.
He averages 10 minutes per game throughout those 88 games. How frequently does anybody score over 10 points when they average 10 minutes per game?

His problem is he is mostly a one trick pony, however his one trick (not taking bad shots) is very useful. Derick Brown is shooting 55% from the floor on a team that averages 45%. One thing we can count on is when we put him in the game he won't kill us with bad shots. This is a very nice quality for a bench/role player. He could probably also eventually develop a nice three point shot from the corner. It would be really nice if he could give us something at the other end of the floor.
D Brown doesn't score a lot because he doesn't create his owns shot. The team doesn't run a lot of plays for him. The Bobcats don't really have guys that are good a distributing the ball and making plays for other people. If we had a player like Nash we would get a lot more out of good finishers like D Brown and T Thomas. Instead Brown is usually on the court with T Thomas (never passes) and Livingston (1.8 assists per game).

In those 13 games this year where he gets his 15+ MPG - he averages 7 points on 4.6 shots in 21 minutes.
T-Time averages 21 minutes per game... averages 11.6 points on 8.8 shots per game.
On a per-shot basis - it's pretty much equal.
Don't get me wrong - at no point do am I trying to compare the 2 - if we had to distribute 21 minutes between the 2, I'd give all 21 to Ty.
I just don't think saying D-Brown hasn't performed well when he has been given minutes is completely accurate. My issue with him is the fact that he had an opportunity to start, show Silas that he deserves to get some minutes even with a healthy roster... and not only did he not play well - he made it blatantly obvious that Silas has him on a short-leash and doesn't have much confidence in him.

It's because neither he nor Hendo have had that "breakout game". In one of those 20+min games one of them needs to go nuts and score something like 25 points. But neither one of them are assertive enough to do that. That's why UPS only shoots it 5 times in 20 minutes while Tyrus shoots 9 times. There's no way we can justify playing those two when they don't offer anything at the offensive end of the floor other than dunks (UPS) and spot up midrange jumpers (Hendo).

Just want to quote and bold what I said before. This was as close to a "breakout" game as we've had from either UPS or Hendo. Tonight should have earned Hendo that 7th man, 20ish minutes per game spot on the team. If he can continue this form for a good stretch then I'll happily eat crow.
