What are the impacts that it would have on American society?
Off the top of my head I would see these things happening:
* Much, Much higher grocery prices
* The death of the SUV ( they couldn't give them away 2 years back when gas hit $3.50 )
* Outrageous energy costs
* More multi-family or multi-generational houses as a result of all of the above
In your opinion, What else would happen?

In England it is about £1.22 per liters
This is about $1.9 for a litre.
1 US gallon = 3.8 liters
so that makes it about $7.2 for a gallon of fuel in England. This makes England more expensive by $1.20 than Ziggy's proposal
It costs be £50-60 pounds to fill my tank up and i have a little 2 door corsa.
Welcome to fuel hell
People bitching about drilling all over the US and offshore again. Forcing Iraq and others to export prices more cheaply to us. Wondering why we haven't accelerated efforts to develop and implement alternative energy and public infrastructure like more trains and buses even though this and last year they bitched about how much those things cost when funding was increased to avoid a $6/gallon scenario so the budgets for that stuff were significantly cut.
So, a lot of complaining, a few more Priuses on the road until prices go back down and people feel comfortable buying SUVs again. Other than that, same old crap.

Hey Plowman,
Do you do a lot of driving? How long does a tank of gas last you?

UK gas/petro prices have always been high compared to the US.
But UK is only same geographic size as NC/SC, and there typical car is much smaller & has better gas mileage.

1. we should be drilling. and not all deep water, yeah you can't see the platforms but we just found out what happens when one blows up. drill land and shallow water
2. shifting to more coal and nuclear power (of course we should have been doing the first two for the past 20 years instead of trying to do it overnight)
3. public transportation repeatedly proves to be a money loser and doesn't save on drivers except for a city like nyc which is not a typical city
4. even the most optimistic outlooks on so called "green/alternative" energies show that it can't generate more than 10% of our total energy, we are many many years from it being a viable option to take a chunk out of our fossil fuel dependancy
