Brewer is about to be bought out by the Knicks and become a free agent. He also plays defense and can be a backup for henderson or replace him in the starting lineup. Many title contenders want him like the Mavs and Celtics, so I think the Bobcats front office need to get on this deal asap.

why would he sign here when he could win a ring?

Rasual Butler was just bought out by the Clippers. He's another SG/SF combo that could do some good here.

Edited to add: Nevermind. Looks like he will sign with the Bulls.

Think I would rather take a flier on Azubuike since NY just waived him.

I would love both guys, but I'm not sure Azubuike will be the player he was before, he's been out all season with a torn patella IIRC, and that happened halfway through last season.

I've been a fan of Brewer since his days back in Florida. But don't you think he is a little too offensively challenged for what we would need?

We would have to get the clearance from the Charlotte Orthos working for the team. They have some very very good Orthos in town. But if healthy, sure he will take some time to get back his shooting touch. But he can help not only in this final stretch, but if healthy, he'd be a great asset next season. I would definitely hope the team would at least check him out and see. Having traded Crash, Azubuike would be a great compliment to Henderson and let the best man start.

Which is why I would prefer Azubuike if his knee is healthy enough to allow him to play.

...his knee is real iffy though ohara...

...and if we really just need "insurance" and practice guys I'd do the D-league...anyone that we'd want to keep is going to chase a ring...the guys with injuries (or coming off) are not really going to he3lp any time soon...

It still can't hurt to bring him in and talk to him. If he's interested and the doctors say his knee is OK, then he is much better than a D-Leaguer. But if his knee is not nearly ready, then I would agree and pass on him. But it is certainly worth the look.

I would be all for either player, though I see Brewer is probably going to a contender. Az, though injured, would only need to be a back-up. If he just needs a season to rehab it a little more, I doubt we make it out of the first round, so we would have that going for us.

@ ohara, Yeah, if he's good to go then we should DEFINITELY check him out, at least show interest. Brewer is healthy, so we should definitely give him a call too, but I doubt MJ will. Seems like he's going into Jerry Richardson mode and doesn't wanna add on anymore additional contracts/money right now. But, we definitely need help on the wings, we are extremely thin and Matt Carroll is not the same Carroll that earned that nice contract. We desperately need help out there.

But, IIRC Azubuike was supposed to be back earlier in the year but apparently kept having problems, that's what kind of scares me about him... But, again, if he is healthy and can get back to 100%, the dude was explosive in GS and we HAVE to bring him in.

Blurb I found on Google:

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The New York Knicks have waived guard Kelenna Azubuike, who never played for the team while recovering from major knee surgery.

Azubuike was acquired from Golden State on July 9 in the sign-and-trade deal that sent David Lee to the Warriors. He was expected to be ready early in the season after missing the last 73 games in 2009-10, but never got into a game despite saying recently he believed he was close.

The move Monday opens a roster spot for a Knicks team that is looking to add size. New York couldn't get any through a trade at the deadline, but team president Donnie Walsh said the Knicks would try to do so through free agency. Former Knicks forward Jared Jeffries, bought out last week by Houston, is a likely option.

and this... doesn't sound good...

The Knicks waived G/F Kelenna Azubuike (knee) on Monday.
The Knicks did not feel that he would be healthy enough to contribute this season so they made the move. Azubuike will be a free agent this upcoming season and will need to prove to teams that he has the explosiveness he had in Golden State. Feb 28, 8:22 PM

But you can also turn that to our advantage if we can get him for the Minimum for 1 yr with a 2nd year Team Option. Minimal money and the team has the option, not the player. I would have to really rely on the team doctors before making the decision, but if they felt he was a go, it would likely be a good investment

Yeah, if there is any chance he'll be the same player he was before I'd do it.

I love Corey Brewer. He would be a nice addition. However, it would be stupid for Charlotte to sign him. From what I can see, the Cats are looking to have room to sign a top free agent in the summer of 2012. If they give out contracts to mediocre guys like Brewer, they won't be under the cap. We need to just ride out what we got, try our best to make the playoffs and start building through the draft and hoping MJ has what it takes to land a top guy, like CP3.

WHy did the Knicks buy him out? I thought he was perfect fit for him

Brewer would be ok under two conditions:

1) he lives with Oakley when the team is in Charlotte
2) he rooms with Oakley when the team is on the Road

In the above scenarios...we'd know by summer if Brewer is ready to grow up and be a professional. We'd probably know before April.

According to Marc Stein the 'Cats are in the bidding.

We do have the pro-rated share of the remaining 2.2 mil on the MLE.

I've liked Brewer for a long time but he's not much of a shooter...and certainly not a 2-3 type...but it's probably moot...he'll probably head to NOs....

I'm guessing that if he wants a ring, he rides the bench win a contender. But if he wants some PT and a shot at redeeming his reputation as a player, then Charlotte gives him the best bet. We are still in the Playoff hunt, and if he helps get us there, that will only enhance his value.

I agree, he would have the opportunity to play meaningful minutes here for a playoff contender. If he does well, that looks good on him and will benefit him for his next contract. I can understand if he wants to chase a ring or if someone offers him a good multi-year contract. But if he really wants to get some minutes? Here's a good spot.

MJ still wants to keep the options for 2013 when we lose a great deal of Contract exposure. I am thinking of a 2 year offer to Brewer, with teh 2nd year being a Team Option for a bit more money than the 1st year. If he lives up to expectations, fantastic. But if he does not, we dont pick up the Team Option.

I like that idea and definitely don't want contracts past 2013 unless it's a major contributor either. Brewer's a nice defender and I'm very curious to see what some Stephen Silas coaching could do for him.

Appears our hope of getting Brewer is getting ever smaller http://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2011/03/celtics_still_pushing_to_land.html

From what I read Dallas hasn't used any of their MLE this year...so prorated 4 million is probably right.

What can we offer...something like 2 million? Or would that be prorated down as well?

Not sure why we would sign up Dom again.... Seems like a knee jerk reaction to missing out on bringing UPS back....

That being said, with new faces comes issues with adjusting to the system, it could help this team to bring someone in who knows the game plan.

Because we all know MJ could've signed him to Jordan Brand and paid him in strippers and because no one would EVER choose to go to Dallas.

Not saying it's our fault like we chose McGuire over Brewer, but that we are not a destination spot for players. I'm just used to us grabbing the Dominic McGuires and Stephen Grahams of the NBA and wish we could be more attractive to better tier players. Corey Brewer would not have transformed us into a 4th seed in the East or anything, so it's not the end of the world. I'm just nervous with our plan moving forward of trying to free up money to bring in free agents and if we are going to be able to lure them here.
