By dealing away Chandler, Wallace, MJ is showing he values dollars over winning

updated 7:56 p.m. ET Feb. 28, 2011

Ira Winderman

You ask, we (try to) answer.

Q: What is Michael Jordan doing?
— Ryan, Gastonia, N.C.

A: Living the reality of running a team where your own money is at stake.

For a moment, consider how Michael Jordan the player would have reacted if his general manager would have sold off Tyson Chandler for an expiring contract, allowed Raymond Felton to escape in free agency without compensation, then dealt Gerald Wallace for pennies on the dollar.

But the shoe is on the other foot, and with the Bobcats struggling at the box office, Jordan decided that securing a lower playoff seed was not as important as getting the books in order.

For all the grief Jerry Krause took while trying to manage Jordan in Chicago, I think Jordan the player would have had far less tolerance for Jordan the owner.

What has transpired in Charlotte is criminal. And it's not as if the Bobcats weren't trying to unload Stephen Jackson and Boris Diaw at the deadline, as well.

It is difficult to see much of a future for the Bobcats.

At least with Jordan as the owner.

I don't know that I'm ready to say the future is completely down the drain, but if something doesn't change, I will be shortly.

You do know there are more than one ways to rebuild right? And by that, different levels of rebuilding? And even further, good and bad types of rebuilding?

Right?

I actually stated after the article that I didn't completely agree with what he was saying, but I do agree with the trades being "criminal." People still can't explain the Mavs trade. WE TRADED AN EXPIRING FOR AN EXPIRING AND TOOK BACK MORE SALARY TO DO IT. LOL that is the most retarded trade in NBA history. But if that's how you like to "rebuild" then have at it!

We have another article posted in the forum basically tugging MJs junk for the trades. I think the problem here is people have different definitions of rebuilding. I don't consider what MJ did rebuilding, unless you think Pryzbilla, Cunningham, and Marks are solid building blocks for the future. But feel free to ignore my posts if you want.

This same nonchalant attitude is what opened the door for the Hornets to eventually leave, but keep your blinders on if you want. There's a reason our fanbase sucks for the most part... They aren't passionate and they just don't care.

Trading your best player away for cap space and late 1st round draft picks isn't rebuilding, its saving money.

cool lets just stick with mediocrity for the next 30 years. go 9th seeds!

Well, MJ did say he wasn't happy with the 7th or 8th. Trading away your best player for the aforementioned cap space and future Alexis Ajincas will solidly lock us into that 9th spot or lower for awhile. At least we don't have to worry about that pesky 7th or 8th seed anymore.

I like the Gerald Wallace trade
I don't like our shitty pointing fingers "fanbase".
Im scared to death we will end up with no team because the carolinas are a bunch of bandwagon fans and the few "loyals: we have seem to hate the team more than the rest.

Edit: Charlotte/Carolina fans are always half empty guys... pessimistic as hell.

If the team gets contracted due to lack of fan support it'll be because this franchise has been run like a clown show since it started. From the TV deals to the personnel decisions, it's been a trainwreck from the start.

It would be wiser to wait out this season before proclaiming the NO pick to be a late 1st rounder. Right now, it is only 2 games from being a Lottery pick. And in 2013, Portland's 1st might very well be the same. Nothing is for certain.

I don't think we can count on them to continue to struggle in the draft. I think it's reasonable to assume there were too many cooks in the kitchen with Larry Brown helping id draft prospects and that issue is not going to play out this year (and on). I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they see a better future with what we can draft and who is in the draft with the picks they got from Portland than they thought we'd have with the current roster as-was.

I like what we are doing.
We are opening cap space + getting picks + getting young players.

MJ is posturing and it is clear that he is willing to take a step back today to get ahead for tomorrow. Losing Wallace sucked, but we all could see he wasnt the same player he was last season. He was on the decline and you have to cut ties when you still can get value back. Just look at what Boston did with Perkins/Powe. If you want to win you have to make the best choices for the short and long term.

We arent eliminated from the playoffs yet and still have a good chance at getting in once Tyrus comes back and we can get some real rotations set. Long term we now have a lot less money of the payroll and some chances to start over.

Good post bud. +1

The same people crying about trading away our best player for expirings and draft picks, would be the ones crying when 2012 gets here and there are free agents available that we couldnt get. Dwight Howard may be available, and I am not saying thats the plan or that its gonna happen, but it definitely cant happen if you have a team built with 8 mediocre 10 million dollar players. And i am tired of hearing "we traded our best player for expirings" ... if Gerald Wallace is your best player, you arent gonna be very good.

And WE ARENT OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS YET!. I think we have an excellent shot of still making the 7th seed once we get healthy and roles are established in the Wallace void.

If i have to postpone 2 seasons of mediocre playoff appearances (and like i said above thats not a given) for even a shot at greatness.. i am gonna take it. In the words of Charlie Sheen... that makes me a WINNER!

Yeah...it's not like an expiring Gerald Wallace could be included in a S&T to get that type of player.

Keep pulling for that "greatness" just as I imagine we all are. Just don't you be doing any "crying" after it takes us 3 years just to get back to that mediocrity that you hate so much after dealing our assets for trash.

I guess we just rate our "assets" differently. I think what we got for Gerald Wallace was plenty.

Trading away your best player for cap space and draft picks isnt rebuilding? Didn't the Blazers and Thunder do that? hmmm they are doing pretty well right now. Bulls did it too, it just took them a while. Pacers also did it
