I'm going to buy one in the next couple of days. I'm not a big gamer, but I want to be able to play some of the newer games. Does it matter which version I buy?
I'll likely buy used from Gamestop.

What are the hard drive sizes on the versions that you're looking at?

Yeah, buy the PlayStation 3 version! LOL Saw that one coming from all the way down in Columbia.
dnb: I'd recommend getting one with at least an 80GB hard drive. That way game saves, and downloaded content for games you really like won't be an issue. Whatever you do, you must get Bioshock. As a fellow English major, you owe it to yourself. Plus I'm sure you can get a copy for cheap.

Well, the newer 360 with 250GB hard drive is about $250. The only other version I see is the 4GB, which is substantially cheaper. Hmmmm.....
Beagle, I have all of those story games in mind. I'm starting with Fallout 3 and then will probably play Bioshock. I'm also springing for Gears of War because it's $5 used. I'll report back to you when I actually get a chance to play those games. By the way, did you ever read the book Extra Lives, which is the writer's attempt to create a critical theory for video games? I'm not sure how successful he was, but it was a very interesting read.

Get the 250 gb...a lot of these games require a hard drive and the 4 gb really isn't one (it's like a built in flash memory card instead). For instance, I'm pretty sure you can't play co-op on Halo without the hard drive. You can supplement the 4 gb with flash drives but that's restricted and sounds like a pain in the ass.
I fell for that one too. The wife bought mine at gamestop, but they took the 4 gb back and exchanged it for the 250 gb.
BTW Beagle...did you get my invite? If you didn't send me a request.

Another thought: I assume you get the 1 month free trial for Xbox Live when you sign up with a new account and not just when you buy a new box.
I've always heard that once you give them a CC you can never get them to delete it. I resisted doing it, but the only way to get their family plan (up to 4 accounts) was thru the CC. If it's only one account you can buy a card and key that in instead. Amazon has 1 year for 40 bucks.

That's 20 bucks off and I don't know how long it lasts. Even if you get the 1 month free you can always wait til that's up and key in the code off the card; as far as I know it never expires.

You have to pay to play online for Failbox? Really?!
Yeah, go with the PS3 ;)

You don't HAVE to...the Silver is free. You just don't get all the options in game play going that route.
I did have a hard time deciding between the two...but I'm happy with the decision I made.

get a slim. if u get one of the old models theres a 0% chance itll last more than 2-3 years. used xbox is kinda dangerous unless youre getting a warranty or something. very shoddy hardware on the old ones.

That's cool. I'll then rob you of your PS3.
New system is supposed to stop a lot of the RRofD issues.

LOL I'm sure it does. I just know there's a lot of PS3/360 homer hatred back and forth so I'm just giving you a hard time

I'm in Davis, right on the Bull/Greene corner!!
Seriously though, I've never really understood the whole technology Homer mentality. There isn't enough of a difference between the PS3/360 platforms to make it worth arguing about other than personal preference. I just wish they made a unified online platform for both systems to play eachother.

Yeah, people get pretty hung up on brands and devices. There are some games I want to play that only on PS3, but I probably won't ever get around to playing all of the games I want to play on the XBox. And, frankly, I'm not sure I want to be that committed to video games!
Alright, now that the sweet talk is over, stick your chin out juuuuusst a bit.

Dunno how long it will last, but for those that went with the 4GB and want to upgrade you can buy the 250GB hard drive thru Amazon for 84$ vs the regular 130$ (that's 35% off, savings of 46$). You can also get a 2nd controller for 30$ vs. 50$.

Edit:
Through April 30, 2011, save on select Xbox 360 accessories.
