Before you say the heck with it and make some serious lifestyle changes like:

* parking the car for days at a time
* taking the bus
* bicycling when possible

What is your breaking point? $5 per gallon, $6, $7?

Way ahead of you, I've left my car in Charlotte and have ridden the shuttle to campus all semester. Saved my a ton of money as my boat sucks gas.

statistics say that it starts around $4 a gallon. AAA is already reporting less driving/gas consumption (politics aside, i think that is the goal of some in government anyway). i think at $8+ per gallon it wouldn't be terribly surprising to see the start of economic collapse because for many it would be too expensive to get to work, the cost of food would be crazy and people would start to loot and riot.

I'm not sure when my breaking point for riding the bus/light rail/taking a bike will be, but I'm not doing any long distance driving this summer unless gas goes back to around $3 or under, small chance I know.

I feel bad for tourism businesses, they are going to take a major hit this summer.

Then government's goal is definetly to reduce driving. I would love to use public transportation, only problem is its non-existent in Mooresville. Also driving to Fort Mill for work is gonna suck this summer.

I've already sort of cut back. I used to work weekdays at the restaurant I'm a busboy for, but that was only 2-3 hours at a time, so now I only work weekends, so as I maximize the drive out and back.

I also skipped going to two Bobcats games I had tickets for after Jack got hurt because it wasn't worth the gas.

I think my lifestyle choice would actually play out more in terms of other purchases: less going out to eat, less frivolous entertainment, etc.

It would be wildly inconvenient for me to drive my bike to work, especially since I have a young child that I frequently have to transport.
