View Full Version : The Jimmer Fredette Thread

I've been a fan for the last two years, but I did have some questions about his transition to the NBA and if he would be able to do what he did in college someday in the pros... I definitely don't think he'll be a JJ Reddick or Adam Morrison IMO, he'll be much better.

First off, I think he has much more athleticism than either of those guys did coming out - the biggest difference, his quickness and ability to create space WITH the ball. JJ and Ammo ran off of a lot of screens in college and thus struggled to have the same success in the NBA. Fredette is quick with the ball and creative as well with great ballhandling and body control once he gets in the air.

But, I know a great deal of criticism has been based on his defensive abilities, which is amazing to me because if anyone has ever watched him, you know he is not lacking in the quickness department on offense, so why does he suddenly turn into a sloth on defense? Easy, because he either didn't want to play it, or didn't have to play it in college. I don't think he'll ever be a great defender but, I think he'll be a fairly good one - the great ones have the drive to do it naturally which we would've already seen by now, so with work he'll be fine.

That being said, how come we haven't heard of him coming in for a workout here? I really hope we bring him in because I think he's going to surprise a lot of people and be a VERY good pro player, possibly averaging 10-15 ppg as a rookie if given the PT. One of our biggest needs was 3 point shooting, which he is obviously very good at... So why haven't we had him in? Does anyone know if we plan on bringing him in at all?

From everything I've seen, he's projected as a mid-late 1st rounder... I think he could very well end up being worth the #9 pick, and if he lasted to 19 would definitely be worth it, without a doubt. What has me even more convinced that he'll be really good is several blurbs I've read on him impressing each team he's worked out with so far... The Kings, Knicks, and now Jazz have all seemed to be REALLY, REALLY impressed with him.

RGM had this on him today: http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/214148/Fredette_Shines_In_Workout_With_Walker

Apparently, he "showed out" in a workout with/against Kemba in front of the Jazz and even Kemba was impressed. So what are we waiting on?

Honestly, I mean this in the most uncontroversial way possible but I think it's natural for all of us to group these guys together... But, I think we're scared of buying into another "white scorer" who dominated on the college level thanks to Ammo... Anybody know what's going on here?

Adam was going to be a really good pro but he lacked confidence and the coaches here really helped destroy him. Then he had the ACL tear which really put him back. The team brought him back too early and he was never the same. He did have some good games in the 2nd year he played. I remember he had 3 games stright where he averaged around 15 ppg and then Larry benched him for unknown reasons and he didnt even play for like 2 weeks. He was treated unfairly here with unrealistic expectations and all that with discreet confidence caused his downfall.

With that said, I think Jimmer will be a good pro. He is a ball handling scorer much like Stephen Curry is. He has a NBA body and confidence/swagger that really makes me believe he will succeed in the NBA. I do believe we are scared to draft him because of Ammo. Paul/Stephen/MJ may think he's good but if they draft Jimmer the city of CLT will likely tear into them until Jimmer proves to be the best player in the draft(which may/may not happen).

I wont be surprised though if we bring him in for a workout within the next week. I mean we dont have too much time(6 days after today), but that's plenty of time for a 2 hour workout.

Jimmer is JJ Barea. That's it. You don't spend a lottery pick on JJ fucking Barea.

Don't be surprised if Jimmer improves his draft stock immensely with his impressive workouts. I will be on this forum laughing at you guys when JJ is a frigging perennial all star.

JJ Barea and Jimmer have similarities and to me that is well worth a lottery pick. JJ will soon be invaluable on the Mavericks squad as a starting point guard. The same will be said for what Jimmer does for the team he winds up on.

Even if both of you are correct, JJ is successful because of the players on the court with him in Dallas. Put him on 20 of NBA rosters/lineups and he isn't anywhere near successful because Dirk, Jet and Peja aren't spotting up to knock down 3's so the defense is able to collapse sooner and deeper to send JJ's shot into the 5th row of seats.

I would not take him at #9, but he'd be very well worth #19. But he wont fall out of the Lottery.

I've heard Rod Higgins say more than once how he loved JJ Barea and what he can do.

Thank god Cho is here? ... I wouldn't hate picking Jimmer. I just think 9 is too high.

I'd be pissed if they took him with the 9th pick.

19th, I don't really care.

I think a lot of you are gonna regret wanting to pass up on Jimmer. Barea didn't come in with the shot or range that Fredette has either... Fredette doesn't need others to spread the floor to create a shot or drive, he can create those shots himself. I hope we take him.

If we take Jimmer, once I've finished slitting my wrists, I will package all of my Bobcats material goods and send them to Utah in the hopes that Jimmer can clothe his 17 wives for a Bobcats game. Because I'll never go to a game again.

To be honest man, thats straight up bullshit and really just bad to hear from someone who has been on this site for a long time. So what happens if we were to take Jimmer and he ends up being the ROY? U gonna start going to the games again after you slit ur wrists and stopped going to the games because we picked him? Part of being a fan is being with the team no matter what.

Wow. I'll just say this, I do think there is no way Jimmer falls past Utah... There may not be a more perfect fit in the history of the draft in terms of a team wanting a specific "type" of player, lol.

But come on Teej, I think some people are believing we're gonna turn one of these mediocre guys into a steal/hall of famer, but I think it may be safer to take a guy with a lower ceiling but a MUCH higher floor. At the least we know we're gonna get scoring from him. Some of the guys we're talking about as picks may not even be able to do that and we're hoping they bank on potential that may not ever come to fruition.

I don't care how much success he has. If he wins 10 rings in a row and Finals MVP, I don't care. I don't like him, I don't like his basketball attitude, I don't like his personal attitude, and I don't like his game. He's a douche bag to people in his life, same as LeBron. He thinks he's the shit, and won't be able to back it up. He plays no defense, chucks up bad shots, and doesn't try to get his teammates involved. He doesn't hustle when his team needs it, and tries to coast half the time. I can support a guy who has a bad style of play so long as he works his ass off, and I can appreciate (though not fully support) a guy with a great skillset that coasts. But I can't tolerate both. Barea got where he is because he works his ass off, and because he's aware of his role. Jimmer is neither.

Also, the Mormon thing is a bit of a problem. Not because I have anything against Mormons (in theory), but because if he IS truly Mormon like he claims, he won't fit in to an NBA team, and if he ISN'T truly Mormon, then you're drafting a hypocrite. Neither of which is good.

Now, ammo, I understand I'm supposed to be a fan and all, but that doesn't mean I have to be a blind follower. MJ, Rod, Rich and Paul's jobs are to give this team the best chance of winning, and drafting Jimmer couldn't be farther from that.

Thank God they agree.

The Front Office stuff is based on three things: A) he isn't coming in for a workout as far as anything I've seen; B) After the AmMo debacle, the front office has shied away from that type of player, and C) all the people I know that work at 333 East Trade have said it's not happening.

The d-bag stuff comes from a former Jimmer acquaintance.

i agree with part. i know teej is joking about the wives thing, but jimmer is from nyc and he is not a mormon. but, ammo, mek was roy and he is terrible. jimmer should not be a lotto and if it were next year's draft, he wouldn't be close. jimmer's career like many other non-superstars will be totally dependant on his cast of teammates and our team is the water to his oil.

TBH, as I said in the OP, I didn't see us picking him because of the stigmas associated with "white scorers" and what happened with Ammo, so I can see that.

But, I would be interested in hearing more about this former acquaintance and why he felt he was a dbag. I hadn't heard anything about his character like that before but of course, it wouldn't surprise me.

I haven't seen the guy play, but based on what I've read, I'm wondering if could possibly have a Mark Price like game (if a Mark Price like game would be effective now) in the NBA if he worked hard?

Any similarities?

I'm pretty cold on the guy, as the NBA requires so much athleticism these days. Just wondering?

Not a problem, just reading through player threads from years back made me want to consolidate all information for each player in one place so we can look back on it after the draft ends.

Teej: I get all the worries and the fact you dont like him and that's fine. I despise LeBron because of all that crap. But I really haven't seen anything to that extent from Jimmer. If he's a winner and gets us championships and MVP's and all that then he's going to be the god of basketball for us. In all honesty, if a LeBron James character wanted to play in CLT or we had the chance to get him, I would take him. Im not talking about an average player with the same LBJ character.....but a multi-MVP guy with that charisma. Im just saying....I want the team to win and if Jimmer wins us games, I want him. Do I think he will be that good? NO. But we cant just dismiss him and assume he won't. We should be looking at every single option.

As far as Jimmer is concerned, it's rather simple:

At 9: Hell no
At 19: Only if Vucevic, Hamilton, and a few others are gone.

He's just too far down my big board to justify having him near the top 20

Actually, he's from Glens Falls, which is closer to Canada than NYC. And he is a Mormon. His dad converted at 18, his mom stayed Catholic, and all three Fredette kids were allowed to pick. They all went LDS.

Mehhh I definitely would not have liked what was going on with the theatrics but I couldnt stop being a fan, especially if I had lived there and been a fan forever. But taht really has nothing to do with Jimmer. I dont think they will be having a freakin Miami 3-esque show where they introduce Jimmer and the 2 other picks. I also am pretty sure Jimmer wont be doing anything remotely close to saying were gonna win Not 1.....not 2........not 3...... but.....___championships.

Apparently we're not interested AT ALL... At least according to Fowler. He says he's not on the schedule to come in for a workout over the next few days, which pretty much means he isn't coming before the draft and the FO doesn't appear interested (in part because of my Ammo theory).

But it seems NY and others are interested in him. Chad Ford says this morning that NY and others are looking to get ahead of Utah at #12 in order to grab Jimmer. We could be in a very good spot to profit from this.
