Relocation WTF?!

Candidates for relocation, according to industry sources, are the Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Hornets, Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Bobcats. They're sustaining losses and looking for investors, or seeking a new/better arena deal.

After reading that article it just pissed me off. No way MJ would relocate our team.

I'm not putting any more thought into it until I see something substantial. Anytime something like this happens, you look to the handful of teams that have been bad over the last several years that aren't in large markets. We fit the criteria pretty well, despite making the playoffs last year.

I wouldn't sweat this either. As far as the investors/business side, any sports business people in the area say that they've made great strides there since Jordan became the majority owner. He's got a rather nice arena deal and if he did want to leave, there's still the issue of the huge fee they'd owe the city for leaving the arena. If this team does leave Charlotte, I believe it'd be a long, long way down the road, most likely with a different owner.

It seems like their nothing to worry about then. When I first read the article I was a bit worried and angry but hopefully in a few years we will be top 5 in the NBA hopefully.

From everything I gathered over the years, it would be very difficult for MJ to move the team. He has invested a lot in the community and played on the homestate ties, so I doubt he moves the team... Yes, he is a businessman, but I don't think he would want to do that to his image in his homestate.

Also, we don't know how much he spent to buy the team. I'm pretty sure as a business man, he's trying to get the team out of the red and make it profitable so that he earns on that investment, and MJ doesn't seem like the giving up type. And again, from what I've understood, unless he sells the team to someone else who is willing to not only buy the franchise for hundreds of millions but also is willing to spend the money to cover the fee of breaking the arena lease, then it's extremely unlikely that he will be able to move. I doubt he has the money, or is willing to spend the money to cover well over 500 mil just to move to another market that he's not sure will be successful either.

I just think we're mentioned because it seems as though a cloud hangs over our market when it comes to NBA basketball since the Hornets left, combined with the rough start we got off to with Robert Johnson (vomit) and the poor attendance because of a lack of a quality product, so it's easy to take a dump on us.

No need to worry about this... The arena lease makes it virtually impossible to leave anytime soon... The following is an excerpt from an article from when Bob Johnson was looking to sale the team. Not sure of the sliding scale but, I bet it would be cost prohibitive to leave before atleast 2025 or so....

The city's 25-year arena lease agreement with the Bobcats says if the team leaves before the end of 2010, it'll have to pay the city $200 million in damages. If it leaves by 2015, it’s $150 million, and so on through 2030.

Mayor Pat McCrory called that a pretty good insurance policy for the arena and taxpayers.

“If they did leave, we'd be guaranteed $200 million, which would more than pay off the debt and probably deal with operating costs,” McCrory.

Can anyone name me a city that is better suited for an NBA team that doesn't already have a team?

Jordan is gonna up and leave Charlotte ( a city that has historically showed up) for Seattle? a 3rd LA team? I mean I just don't see any realistic options.

Contraction will always be an issue for small market struggling teams, when the NBA is in financial strains. But Relocation is just not an option for Charlotte.

Well, JGib beat me to it with the arena lease, which I'm pretty sure none of these ignorant motherfuckers have any clue about. They just look at the Forbes team valuations/profit scales (which, at least in the Bobcats case, are totally off), and go "Oh, wow, this team must want to move!"

Nevermind the fact that even if the 'Cats moved somewhere with an arena paid for them and profited like the Lakers, it'd still take them about 10-15 years before they saw any money at all.
