View Full Version : Two tiny "Point Guards" getting heavy run: Where has it actually worked????

My first thought is Barea and Terry with Dallas. Although Terry looks to have far more length than either Augustin or Kemba, which likely helps him defend the 2Guards in the league. So it's probably not a good example. It helps when you have Nowitzi, one of most uniquely great bigs of our time....

I hate having two little PG's playing together and getting exploited on defense while our possibly best prospect(Hendo) sits on the bench, but I'm trying to keep an open mind.....

Examples where it has worked???

We had two tiny PGs back in 94-95 with Muggsy and Adams. You need solid defensive cover, an elite defensive system and rotations. Larry Johnson and Zo were able to cover our smallish backcourt. As long as you have good defensive bigs, a small backcourt shouldn't be a problem.

You can always switch to matchup if there are mismatches.

The problem with that example: Adams never averaged more than 15-16 minutes or 6.5 points for the Hornets. I assume much of those 15-16 minutes were given to REST Mugsy rather than play next to him. But I could be wrong.

Since Kemba is a lottery pick, it would be nice to be able to utilize him in the 25-35 minute range and see him scoring 15ish points a night, but I don't see how that would work with DJ logging 30-35 minutes of his own. In my humble opinion, this is inevitably an audition between the two to see who stays--whether the Bobcats currently have that mindset or not.

I think we are all hoping it could work, but I don't see it. Zones are too easy to score on in the NBA. And a 6'1" combo guard with a 7'8" standing reach is going to be eaten alive by NBA 2guards.

I don't think the biggest issue it that they are tiny, although it is an issue, the problem is they can't shoot. The biggest advantage of being tiny is being able to get your shot off because you are supposedly the quickest guy on the court. Neither of our tiny guys has shown the ability to convert more than 40% of their shots so if they aren't efficient scorers or distributors it makes no sense to have them out there just to get abused on the defensive end.

One tiny non shooting PG is enough for any roster which is why one of them will be gone after this season, and we all know which one it will be.

Yes. Well put!

8 games in, DJ was at 40% from 3 and 40% overall, with a decent Points-per-shot number. It'd be nice if he could get back to that, but I'm not holding my breath.

I fear we have yet again drafted another redundant piece. I was interested in Alec Burks since he could handle the rock and maybe play all 3 positions eventually. He's not showing much yet, but I liked his tools and how he could fit with our other young pieces.

unsurprisingly DJ has regressed back to his normal self (though like I said, I never thought he was playing that much better than normal, just streaky like he always is)

unsurprisingly Kemba has failed to impress enough to earn a bigger role

they are both disappointing.
