Source: espn.com, earlier this morning. Note: nothing is pace adjusted.

We rank 5th in blocked shots per game, and yet our our opponent FG% is only 28th in the league, so we still don't defend overall. We actually do slightly better defending the 3, ranking 25th in opponents' 3pt FG%.

The Cats are pretty much ranked 25th to 30th in every major statistical category. But there are a few exceptions to go with the shot blocking: We are not the WORST ballhandlers around, ranking 21st in assist to turnover ratio. The team is 21st in assists per game to go with 24th in field goals made per game, so when we DO actually score, it is often from a good pass.

One stat that jumps out at me is our terrible Points per shot statistic. For every field goal we attempt, we are only averaging 1.07 total points. That is now good for DEAD LAST in the league.

This is obviously a reflection of the fact that we don't get to the line(27th in FTA per game), we don't shoot that high of a FT% when we do(23rd), and we can't make a high percentage of shots when we shoot in general(29th in FG%, 25th in 3PT%).

The low Points Per Shot stat combined with our reliance on passing for our buckets is an obvious indication that we need a go-to guy who can put the ball in the hole, or at least draw fouls and get easy points there. Corey Maggette would help in getting to the line more, but he is not the future, so in a way his injury is a favor to show us what we have with our younger players.

No doubt this could be used as an argument to draft a scorer next summer. But outside some shot swats and decent passing, we are really not all that good at anything. Anthony Davis would only bring more shotblocking, but can you have too much of that?? Especially when opponents are shooting a high % against you?? He's also a great rebounder, and our rebounding differential is 28th in the league.

Harrison Barnes would definitely make some buckets, but would he be able to get to the FT line very much??

Oddly enough, as I was doing this research, I discovered this guy had the same thing on his mind today......

I don't think you can have too much defense, as long as you are some semblance of an offensive threat. The Pistons never really had an elite scorer, but everybody and contributed and the defense was astounding.

I think the main question-- and I completely defer, because I don't follow college ball-- is whether Anthony Davis will be a quality all around defensive player, which it sounds like is the case. If he was some kind of blocking specialist and nothing else, then that might be going overboard. However, Davis seems like he has the kind of athleticism to be a fantastic 4 and let BB play a slightly smallish 5.

I'm also wondering if BB is still growing.

I'm not as concerned about acquiring a scorer. You can find a guy who can get you 20 points if everything else is in place.
