Interesting that Paul let his son have the reins tonight. How much should we be looking into this?

I think a lot needs to be looked into this. The observer says that "it is no secret Paul wants his son to succeed him as head coach..." http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/03/09/3085136/bobcats-lose-to-nets-83-74.html

Paul Silas did inform the players just before the game that Stephen would be functioning as head coach Friday. It’s no secret Silas wants his son to succeed him as Bobcats head coach. Paul Silas’s contract with the Bobcats expires after this season.

Paul said after the Orlando game that he got kicked out of, that "this was Stephens game anyway".

I think that was the arrangement from the very start. I can't be sure who approached who, but I think Stephen and Paul were an attached deal. :Yeah Mike, I'll captain the ship during the tankjob, but I'm bringing Stephen along and he gets the shot after I get the task done."

Why else would a 68 year old, well respected head coach that had been out of the league for 5 years take on the dreadful task of coaching this roster?

I think its a great idea and I am all for it. StephenSilas2013

Stephen Silas is a big part of our future.

Lock to coach us next imo.

Stephen as head coach is an awesome thing to look forward to. I think Paul will stay on as a consultant or something long term, he has a way with players that the other old man didn't :)

Tat, I think Paul will take over what Dell Curry did before he jumped into Henry Williams' tv spot, as the Director of Player Development or whatever the title was. I'd check, but all my old media guides are in a box in the garage.

Either way, that'd be ideal, let him hang around and guide Stephen, but make it clear Stephen is in control.

FWIW

Stephen Silas is 2-3 in games he has either coached fully or taken over after his father was ejected.

He is 0-2 against the Nets though

Shouldn't at least some of this "epically bad" season we're having be laid at the Silas' feet? It's their rotations, their sub patterns, their offensive & defensive schemes. One of the worst things to me is that they seem to be losing players...one of Silas' supposed strengths.

I can't believe anyone would want these guys back.

I was beginning to think this awhile back also. Unlike most of everyone else, I don't believe we have a totally bad team. But when we are constantly blown out in 3rd quarters game after game, fingers got to be pointed somewhere.

not a fan of either coach. neither has shown me that they have an actual game plan. are we a running team? do we sit in the half court and run set after set? it seems like sometimes it is both, but with no actual identity. this is fine to a certain point considering the roster is a combo of very young and don't know how to play players and washed up vets and journeymen minimum guys, but to me neither has shown a clear philosophy especially with defense. our defense is absolutely horrid. but it is so tough to tell considering our front court is atrocious.

basically, it is so tough to tell the difference between coaching and our shitty talentless players. i say give stephen a shot next year and then decide which direction going forward. our best plan is to suck as bad next year as this year anyway.

I like Silas, both of them, but even considering the lack of talent, I don't see how you can wipe the stink off this season. They're just getting their brains beat out. I think you have to start over with a new staff.

Bobcats: so bad they can't win with TWO guys trying to be the head coach.

We are a young and low talent team no doubt...but when we're within reason (this year that being within 10) at the half and at the beginning of the 3rd quarter the opposing team goes on a 13-0 run and we make absolutely no adjustment...that's the coach. When the opposing team starts putting their starters in while we're running with the "blue team" (God I hate that whole concept) and their lead suddenly balloons and we make no changes until it's too late...that's the coach.

And this subbing by quarters? Lord...flashback to Bernie.

I won't be going after a pitch fork if Silas Jr. is made coach next year, but I still worry that player development is going to suffer greatly. Sure Smack has gotten better...but I'm not so sure that's just not him learning the damn game.

what part of tanking don't y'all understand? In order to be the worst team and guarantee the best chance at number one over all... you have to lose the most games. If we are looking good in the first half and in the third quarter we inexplicably go down 15 points.... its on purpose. Its the same argument we've been having for a year now. Sure this team with a good game plan and some solid substitutions could win 15-20 games. But what exactly is the point in that?

In no way do I believe we come out in the 3rd badly on purpose.

tanking understood but to what extent.

sorry but I'm starting a new thread to discuss this "tanking theory"

The players aren't doing anything on purpose. They don't have to. Paul and the front office are doing a controlled demolition. It's the only thing that makes sense. Why else would a respected NBA coach leave Matt Carroll or any other struggling bench player in for 10 minutes of a 3rd quarter. Did he just suddenly forget how to coach basketball? I just don't see it like that. I see a coach who is playing 12 players almost equal minutes some nights. This coaching staff in no way shape or form is trying to win meaningless basketball games this year, and i dont think its because they can't.

I think we will get 8-10 wins this year to make sure we are both the worst team this year, but not quite the worst team ever.
