I for one would like to see Charlotte keep DJ Augustin around. I feel like he hasn't reached his ceiling yet and I'd like to see him in one of our jerseys when he does. I think he could be doing a lot better with more options.

It's all about price. Do I want him for $5M a year? Sure. Do I want him for $8-9 year?
Thanks for all the fish.

I also would love him here, but at the right price

I do agree for the right price but right now I'm only talking about basketball specifics. Who would you rather keep; DJ or Kemba? Where do you see DJ or Kemba's career going long-term? NBA Comparisons?

My thoughts exactly.
From what Ballwhore has hinted, no way he stays for 5m. Anything more than 5, I favor letting him walk.

I still favor DJ to Kemba...I was not huge on Kemba when we drafted him, but liked his scoring touch, he's flashed, but hasn't shown to me enough to be impressed and I was honestly quite disappointed in his play this year even as a rookie...I'd gladly take DJ back and give him back his starting role.

PER 14.2
TS% .491
eFG% .436
He's shooting .374 from the field and he can't guard my grandma.
5 million is the absolute max and I personally think that's overpaying.
Assists are overrated, esp. with our "offense". The guy who sets the pick and doesn't foul is more deserving of a stat than the guy who throws it to the man getting freed by said pick.

The thing that kills me is DJ comes off a pick and even when he gets inside he can do nothing and teams know it. His mid range game is non existent and over the years he has never got any better at finishing on the inside. He is just a bit one dimensional for me.

Agreed. I'm certainly not of the mindset to help him pack his bags, but for the price he'd ask...it just doesn't fit what the 'Cats are trying to do.

What we sorely need on this team is a leader. It doesn't have to be the point guard but as he typically has the ball in his hands the most that's who is looked to. DJ has blown a huge opportunity to take that position over when we needed it the most. Unless we can get that guy in another position (and I think it's fairly rare) I don't want to be paying a backup that kind of money.
He REALLY needs a Raja Bell.
I do think he's finishing better in the paint...but I don't think it's that significant. He's also gotten a lot better creating, but again it's not near enough for me to balance out his shortcomings.
I don't know that Kemba is that guy either, but with him we have like 3 more years at a much cheaper rate to find that out.

Won't be much to debate about soon enough he will be out of this travesty and there won't be any shortage of takers. Orlando, Portland (who was drafting him from the start ) Utah, Toronto and New Orleans already very much interested. Next season can't come soon enough. :D

I don't want him, but damn, I wish we could get some value for him instead of just letting him walk

bw or anyone else: at this point can we get anything from him? what advantages do we have as his current/former team?

Well, if that's the case, I wish the Cats would do a sign-and-trade and get something back.
What is up with our hometeams letting our best players walk for nothing... Poor management.

You can't call it poor management because some guy on the internet who is friends with DJ says other teams are interested. Look at it rationally. DJ has been here 4 years and never really won the job. If you are Utah, Toronto, NO, Portland or Orlando... why would you give up draft picks or players for a guy you know no one else is gonna make an offer on because everyone knows we aren't gonna resign him.
I wish we could have gotten something for him too, but its not like he's a hot commodity even on this team... and this team went 8-58. If a team that is this bad has no interest in resigning him... how can we expect someone else to offer up a cash prize for his services?

I get what you're saying Mustachio, but BW has been pretty accurate in his assessments of things with DJ in the past.
Additionally, look at the Felton situation... I always thought Felton sucked for the most part, but there were things he did that other teams valued. At the least, he was a solid backup and a team would be willing to trade youth or a pick for that in many cases. He ended up being one of the pieces that got NYK Carmelo. Then he was part of another trade that brought Andre Miller to Denver (I'm sure there was more involved that was of value but I'm too lazy to look right now, but I think it was a draft day trade). So, Felton was moved twice since he left here. Teams wouldn't be trading for him if they didn't think he held some kind of value. Although, I think he's worn that value out after this year in Portland.
Saying all that, YES, I believe DJ would get us something nice in return if he was traded. It isn't based off of what Ballwhore is saying... To me it's common sense. He's a solid player when healthy. I believe he could be a starter for a really good team and therefore, he is a valuable asset. It's not as if this is Corey Higgins I'm talking about trying to trade... DJ can play. And team's have been and will be interested. We would get something of value back in return for him.
I just get pissed when it comes to stuff like this when I think back on all of our history and our pro sports teams in this state - The Cats (Felton, now DJ), Hornets (too many to count), Panthers (Peppers).

If another team gets him in a trade on draft night, they hold his tender amount and that has value. I just can't see why we couldn't get a late 1st to mid 2nd round pick for him and/or snag another BJ Mullens type of guy (youngster on rookie contract riding/wasting away on the pine). I think most of us agree that one of the other 29 teams will give him more than 5 million per and if our FO knows we will not match anything near that, why hold on to him and tender him if we are 98% sure he will be gone because we will not match?

A thread like this pops up about once a month which, not coincidentally, is how often DJA has a good game. That's why nobody really cares to keep him, especially if it means overpaying.

What's laughable to me is when people just come with sh#t like he just flatout sucks. What is there about 450 people that play in the NBA and that makes them the best 450 in the WORLD! He is deserving of being part of the 450 and is considered in the top third by basketball people not outsiders like mustachio or whom ever the f#ck. He has value and is not even tripping on starting as long as the person in front of him is better. Dj will be a part of any rotation on any team in the NBA all 30 he would play and half of the best players in the world don't even see the floor. Portland and LA tried to trade for DJ and the front office as they should wanted to dump diop, boris, tyrus or add another team in one of every deal as they should. Your or rather our team is a f#cking laughing stock even playing at maximum potential out of their mind the talent is not there and I don't think it's fair to judge anyone off of this bullshit that's ran out there not Kemba, Hendo none of these players. With something this bad the only thing consistent is inconsistency. Anyway, why would anyone part with a draft pick now knowing that Charlotte for one is not going to match a dime. Sign and trade with some actual value is a slim possibilty but Portland straight up told his agent they will just wait until after the season and sign him to an offer sheet. Who know's they can change their mind i'm just more inclined to think that GM's might know a little bit more about players potential than these online franchise owners. His QO is 4.4mil I guess he is not worth that either right? Anywhere but here he will be better off as a player all 15 of them would be. Talent around you get's progressively worse but you get better? Not in a team sport homey

I really don't know what market value this guy has he's been inconsistent but he does have talent, a solid point guard for a franchise with some strong pieces would love him. At the moment though I doubt we'd be able to get a decent second rounder with him being RFA and all.
