View Full Version : Question about stat tracking

Is there a place that lists stats that are, um, more game specific and less mathmatic?

Let me try to explain this question better.

Is there a website that keeps all types of detailed information, game to game, on, say, our Bobcats, that I can go to and look at tendencies and effectiveness?

Examples:
Where on the floor does Gerald Henderson shoot the highest percentage? Where does he make the most attempts/misses/makes etc.?

When being guarded by a 6'5-6'7 range defender, what is his shooting percentage comparatively to other sizes, and what kind of shots is he taking?

Is he best driving left or right, home or away games?

If Kemba passes to Gerald off a screen on the left side of the basket, at a home game, while being covered by a 6'5 guard, is he more likely to hit from 15 feet, or 18, or should he then drive?

Basically, is there a way to look at all of this stuff and use it to say....
"Henderson, when you are being guarded by Lebron, your highest completion (60%)will come from left baseline between 10-15 feet, and when Augustin passes you gain an extra (5%). Also only do that when Thomas is also playing because for whatever damn reason if anyone else is playing PF you drop 20%

Follow up question: Would these stats be just meaningless coincidence? Or would data from all last year really show us who should pass to whom, be on court with whom, where they should shoot from, and what they should do when certain defenders are on them?

If you can't tell I have a history in baseball analysis, specifically pitching decisions.

My personal favorite stat tracking website is 82games.com

They may not have all the things you are looking for but they have a pretty in depth review of things.

It's information, so it can help. However, basketball tendencies seem much more effected by teammates and coaching than baseball tendencies. I would be careful about drawing any conclusions last year just because we were a mess. Following the players this coming season will likely be more meaningful, as they will have done a lot of work before the season starts and everyone should have had a fair amount of coaching.

I think I may have found your basketball stat bible. I knew of the site before, but just browsing through it again, they actually do break down every single player, with shot charts to individual games, and there are head to head comparisons.

Here's the Bobcats main page: http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CHA/2012.html

You can click on any player, and if you go to the drop down menu for shooting, just pick any year and you'll get a full shooting chart for everything, for the year, per quarter, per opponent, per distance, per shot type, per blood alcohol content...

Then under the drop down menu for finder, there is a link for head to head comparisons. I don't think there is any way of telling who guarded who for what possessions, as I don't think any database could keep track of every single player in the league and who was matched up per possession. But it at least tells you they both played the same game:

There's probably much more break down for all the stat geeks, so hopefully this helps what you're looking for. Be sure to remember to eat, go to the bathroom, and sleep every once in a while.
