Just thought I would create a thread for all news to do with the Olympics for those of you who will be following it. I am interested to see what you guys thought of the opening ceremony as well?

ps KD was looking sharp in his glasses, Russell Westbrook was acting like a 7 year old kid and LBJ has a goatee haha

i was a little embarrassed, the USA athletes acted like such tourists, and most have been there before. It was sad.

A question for the UK people out there. I was watching the bike races and noticed the occasional squiggly white lines on the road.

What the heck do they mean?

i was surprisingly entertained by the woman's bike race this morning.

i have a hard time with the olympics because i can't relate with many of the athletes. like, i can't imagine how you could get to be a world class water polo player without being a douche bag. or what it would be like talking to a 4'8" 16 year old who has only ever focused on gymnastics. anyone else have this problem? that 5 time gold champion skeet shooting woman would probably be pretty fun to hang out with though.

I found myself really fascinated by the ping-pong players. When you are that good, where do you go in order to get a competitive game. Who do you practice against?

so, my 15 week old decided 4 am would be a great time to party after eating. my wife made me get up and take her downstairs to get her back to sleep. there we are rocking as i count down the minutes until 530 when my alarm goes off. i turn on the olympics and naturally the only thing on is croatia vs china womens hoops. after deciding that i would be the best player on the floor and shaking my head at how unathletic the game is played, i noticed a particular guard from the croatia team.

so i consulted google to find out who she was. her name is Antonija MISURA (http://www.sportsgrid.com/media/2012-summer-olympics-media/croatian-basketball-player-antonija-misura-is-the-hottest-olympian-weve-seen-thus-far/#0).

enjoy.

Holy shit Chef, great find!!! Zig, what do you mean white squiggly lines? You must be more precise... but you might mean The squiggly lines as you call them are before and after pedestrian crossings...those ones are white. They are also outside of the entrances to schools, those ones are yellow.

Those lines are called zebra crossings, it is where cars must stop if there is a pedestrian waiting... really exciting I know.

I know you guys set all sorts of Olympic records today and Melo had 37 in 14 mins but can I just give a big shout out to the GB team who lost by 1 point 79-78 to Spain. We are ranked 43rd in the world and we almost beat the world number 2 (minus navarro and Rubio but still) thats huge for us. If anyone caught the game I would love to know what you think. Also Joel Freeland is playing Portland next year before you get any ideas...

good game. i have watched most of the good matchups (read not the african teams) and all of the usa's games. deng is a warrior for GB this go round. unfortunately, he is really the only good player. the end was rough because spain knew to switch everything and deny deng the ball. it really messed GB up. they were way outclassed but gutted out a great game for the home crowd.

i didn't realize this until last night (uncultured, i know) during the medal ceremony of the heptathlon that the home country ennis won (pretty decent looking too) and heard "god save the queen". i found myself instinctively singing "my country tis of thee" and when i actually paid attention to the words, i realized this was a 1700's version of "hit em up". basically, it was a giant F.U. from colonial america to it's former rulers.

Yeah Jess Ennis is like the face of the British Olympic team over here and the face of GB athletics. She had so much pressure on her to win and she absolutely smashed it! Very proud of her, she performed when she needed to. Who is the face of the US Olympic team? Is it Phelps? I miss Maurice Green "the green machine"

Anyone watching GB basketball v China. World number 43 (us) against world number 10s. I know neither teams are playing for anything but just to win one game is huge for GB. First time we would win a game in the Olympics!

Plus Yi is playing for those who are interested in signing him

I have a dumb question. I've been watching the Olympics for the last week and a half and have seen people from all over the world, but I haven't seen anyone out of India.

Why is that?

the following are the minutes from the meeting from the Indian olympic committe

pres. raji: look guys, we all know we are the least athletic country per capita in the world. this is embarrassing. i mean freaking new guinea has more medals than us. what are we good at. i mean we are absolutely terrible at everything.

member taj: we are very good in cricket and elephant riding

pres: neither of which are olympic events. so lets pool a bunch of money together and figure out which obscure events we can win at.

member mahatma: i know, shooting doesn't require actual athleticism, let's do that. and of course there are the backyard games and we are close to asia, so let's give badminton a go and since most chicks aren't into boxing let's find one of our billion females who doesn't mind getting punched in the face.

pres: let's do it. scour the rice patties and computer call centers for talent and report back to me. meeting adjourned. the cricket match starts in 30 minutes.

Is India just a less sports crazed society?

They could find someone to do ping pong, speed walking or something.

Watched the Korean weight lifters last night clean and jerking 500+ pounds. It was damned impressive.

Been trying to avoid this thread, considering how badly my country have been doing.
A lot of humbling experiences for some of these athletes.

They're poor. They don't have the resources to do sports professionally on a large scale.

Sally Pearson? Yeah she's an absolute blur.
Looks 35 but shes only 25.

Oh on another side note, Australia gets destroyed by USA in the Basketball. As if anyone didn't see that coming =P
