I found this in the Gaston Gazette (http://www.gastongazette.com/sections/sports/bobcats/index.aspx):

Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith is quoted in Thursdays editions of Florida Today saying Charlotte turned down an offer from his team before choosing to acquire Eric Williams, a 2009 second-round draft pick and $1 million in cash from San Antonio for Melvin Ely on Tuesday. Smith said the Magic was offering upcoming free agents Travis Diener and Bo Outlaw for Ely

It must have been the franchise altering acquisition of a 2009 2nd round pick that swayed them towards the Spurs deal.

Travis Diener is just another undersized guard, who would not be able to take any playing time from Mcinnis, Carroll,Knight,D.A or Felton. and Bo Outlaw is not doing much either. But I still think they could have gotten more for Ely.

Travis Diener isn't much, but I'd rather have him than Eric Williams.
They should have made a deal last season when they could have got way more for Melvin

I agree with that. Last year he may have scored a late 1st rounder.

BUT, an expiring contract, a pick and cash are worth more in a trade then Travis Diener.

Based on that assumption, I'd rather have the Spurs deal if we are going to make a move, but I'd rather have Diener if we just went straight up and planned on keeping him.

no doubt, when i saw we got eric williams i thought of the dude that played for wake forest last year. the spurs 2nd round pick is gonna be one of the last picks in the draft so its basically worthless. awesome job!!!
