View Full Version : What would be the city's reaction to having 5 former Tarheels on the roster?

Hypothetically it could happen
Felton
May
Mcinnis
Brandon Wright (If we miss out on the Oden/Durant sweepstakes)
Vinsanity or Antowain Jamison (if we sign either of them this offseason)
With 5 of an available 15 spots on our roster occupied by the baby blue I'm sure that we would be the butt of many jokes on many of the sports shows.
What do you think the city's reaction would be from a fan standpoint, they are a lot of Tarheel fans out there that would be happy, but there are probably twice as many people that hate the Tarheels that would be turned off by these moves?
Thoughts?

Thats a great question . Im a Tar Heel freak . But i think its too many Duke , WaKE . NC State fans. That the BOBCATS would lose. You just got to take the best players out thair if you want to win. Carolina Duke State Uconn Who ever . Its the talent you looking for not the college.

well i think where someone goes to college should not really be an issue in selecting a player, since we already have 3 UNC players, not many people would like any more. but UNC has such a great crop of NBA players to choose from, its hard not to have one on your team haha. but seriously if the best players are available from UNC, we've gotta take em because they will help

quite simply the reaction would be mass hysteria and i would hang myself.
nah im with everyone up here. i preach "its the NBA now, dont make a damn where they played."
and i said this about 500 times last night at the orlando game (JJ Redick) and almost got into some fights arguing with stupid ass carolina fans. and cussing stupid ass duke fans for cheering for Orlando in their own states teams arena because of one player.
LET IT GO.
there are some good carolina fans even on this forum that can seperate NBA from College.
however i couldnt handle another player from UNC, simply because of the dumb ass fans that will cheer for or against the bobcats simply because there are unc players on the team. it just makes us look bad

I think I could handle either Wright or Hansborough (with the late 1st rounder) just fine as long as they are good..
And Im a huge Wolfpack fan that grew up a Duke fan
Its all about production to me

The executives should look at the players regardless of their old school. I wouldn't mind having 10 Tar Heel(or 10 Wolfpack, Blue Devil, Husky doesn't matter) on the roster, as long as they contribute to the Bobcats on the right way. I'm against only when they sign a namely Tar Heel for only being a Tar Heel(remember selecting May in 2005 draft, skipping Danny Granger, Gerald Green etc. btw, no offense to May he's a real solid player but was he our real need?)
This summer if we'd have 3rd pick and Brandan Wright is the best of the rest, take him without thinking one more minute. In my logic, that's simply as this.

as far as the may pick is concerned... yeah i feel like they took him based on popularity at the time... but if he can stay healthy... i think he was a great pick...
hes a big dude that has a solid medium range game. automatic from 18 feet im telling you. he can run and post up( when hes fully healthy) so i mean... even if he comes off the bench for us and adds some instant offense with his jumper... im ok with him being our 13th pick...
and as far as brandon wright goes.. i feel like we already got him on our roster but hes wearing a Ryan Hollins jersey. id rather develop ryan and use that pick on another type of player.

I might would stop pulling for the bobcats, i hate unc basketball i am not going to lie and 5 of them on our team would just be too much for me.

MUST you cool but its no way you can put Wright and Hollins in the same class NO WHERE IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM Compare him to a Garnett would be a whole lot closer. But in my eyes hes a Sam Perkins.

I'll only add another tarheel if his name is Antawn Jamison and he comes at a good price. Other than that I just want the best player available, tar heel or not.

I think some of the Bobcats financial difficulties can be attributed to the marketing to the UNC fan base.
Yes, UNC alumni like basketball. However, its tough for most of them to make it to games since their jobs conflict with gametime hours...
Its just hard to make it to games when you're busy delivering pizzas. Maybe they should market to a non-liberal sissy arts school.

I can feel the wrath of the Tarheel faithful preparing to pounce on rallydurham.

I can't speak for anyone else but I wouldn't be pissed if where picking up the best available player but that Sean May pick was questionable considering we needed a shooting guard and they're were some good ones still left in the draft.

the bobcats would be like college part 2 for all the unc players.
Tarheels senior "omg, im going to graduate this year!!"
tarheels sophomore "where do you plan to go now?"
Tarheels senior "i dunno. im staying in carolina to play for the bobcats"

Bernie has always been straight up before the drafts.
In '04 we KNEW that we'd get either Howard or Mek, and everyone knew Okafor was our preference.
In '05 we KNEW that Bernie was going to draft a big and a small...he just didn't know in which order. Felton was the last of the top PGs so it was a no brainer to use the 5th on him, leaving the 13th for the best big guy left. May was the guy.
You can argue the pick, you can complain about Bernie not being flexible enough to shift his sights to Green or Granger...but you can't argue that May wasn't the best big that was left. People might want to think that May was a "Tarheel pick", but it goes against facts.
A SG was a dire need, but so was a big guy (just look at our troubles when Mek sits out).
In '06 Bernie said we need a go-to guy...a scorer. We took Morrison, arguably the only one projected to be that.
Back on topic. As most of you guys said, I don't care what school a player comes from, so long as they contribute to our success. Wright wouldn't be a bad selection, as he could develop into a poor man's Durant without the long ball threat, and he'd provide some much needed help to Emeka underneath. He's not my choice however, and if we were in line to pick him I'd much rather consider moving our pick for a vet...like JRich for example.

Spectre , I am a TAR HEEL fan freak what ever true blue . People talk a lot of junk about The Heels .But most of them turn out to be solid pros. But to say picking MAY wasent to put buts in the seats is WAY OFF BASE. That was the main reason we took MAY. With Granger , Green . Villawava not drafted yet.
I all so disagree with your assament of WRIGHT to
be any bodys poor any thing . Hes going to turn out to be a solid pro not saying he should be a BOBCAT but who ever drafts him will get a solid player .
I would trade May and Morrison to get him and hes never played a NBA Game.
As for Howard i would trade OKAFOR for him right now straiught up . Howard will be a better pro.
FELTON hasent produced like i thought he would so far . But i think once he gets rid of Bernie his numbers better go up or we going to need another point [ Thats ass to turnoverS and shooting percentage] His 14 per game is fine. I to just want Charlotte to win and i dont care if its 15 Tar HEELS.
After watching Hansborough last week i would even trade Morrison for him to .
Its a great draft and if we smart we will have a solid team going into next year.
Befor the draft i would put Morrison and MAY on the trading block just to try and get a first rounder for either one of them .20 or up and you can have either.

Dav7z actually I've always been a UNC fan too, but that means absolutely nothing to me so far as the Bobcats. Actually if anything I tend to shy away (sort of an anti-bias if you will)...but let's just throw that to the wayside for now.
Charlie V was drafted 7th and wasn't available at the 13th.
http://www.nba.com/bobcats/backstage_bernie_050627.html
Interview with Bernie before the '05 draft:
(On whether he will definitely pick one guard and one big man)Unless we make a decision that were going to take the best talent. Youve got to make a decision. Youve got two young high school kids out there that have great upside, and we make that decision at five.
See what he's saying there? IF we decide to take a gamble on potential we'll do it with the 5th pick. By taking Felton at 5th he went with the original plan of small/big. With CV gone and we're taking a big guy...who was still available that was projected to be better than May? Maybe Hakim Warrick (today I'd make that trade in a second, mainly because of May's knee), but this is what Bernie had to say about him:
(On Hakim Warrick) Hes long. Hes got a great first step. A terrific finisher. But from those types of guys, theres a concern about the shooting. In our situation, we need to add shooting. Like I said, he was a little better than we thought. Thats why we bring them in and evaluate them and put them through the process that were putting them through.
Bernie wanted someone who can shoot, which once again points at CV & May. UNC had NOTHING to do with it.
FWIW, if he even considered gambling with the 5th he damn well should have if the same opportunity was there at 13th, which of course it was. THERE was the error...Bernie got locked into a strategy and didn't adjust when the opportunity arose.

You right about Caarlie. V for some reason i keep tghinking 14th . But that must have been Mccants. Im not even sure about that now, But i still think that May pick was to put buts in the seats.
Even at that time, and if MAY could have stayed healthy, it would have made Bernie look like a genius.

well i think where someone goes to college should not really be an issue in selecting a player,
Well, I gotta agree with part of that statement, 123. Who really gives a darn where anyone went to school? If I want to pull for my college (or against another one) then I go to a college game.
No one cares where (or if) they went to school. Fans only want a winning team, and without a tradition of pulling for a team, that's the ONLY thing that will pull them in. You can bring in 15 Tar Heels and Huckleberry Hound, oops Roy Williams, and no one would really care unless they would win. But I would hang myself before having to listen to Huckleroy in a press conference.
