I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and Marc Stein says: "The Mavericks' No. 1 target in free agency? Folks in Dallas might have been expecting Mavs killer Matt Barnes, but I'm told it's actually Charlotte's Gerald Wallace."
Whom they can offer us? Please do your best Mr. Jordan. Keep Wallace.

oh no, not the mavs. hell no. hope fully jrich can talk him out of that like "man, remember last year's playoffs? they lost to my team in only the first round! don't do it!"
*fingers crossed* resign Gerald! resign!
Hopefully those stories about Crash wanting to stay are true. I have to think we'll show him the money. He's the lynchpin of the team. Plus, he's just hitting his prime. Hopefully a 4/40 keeps him here.

Tupac yeah, til it got hacked out of existence the night before the draft. Don't know what's going to happen in the future, if anything.
I'm hoping we get some info...news is already out about Detroit's offer to Billups (it's a little over 14 for 4). Normally you'd think we'd hear something, but I can't honestly say that if we don't hear anything til the 11th that it's bad...the new regime has been good at keeping things quiet.

I wouldn't get too worked up over this fellas.
We're basically the only team that can pony up the $ for him...
The only way we'd lose him would probably be through a sign and trade which means we'd be getting an asset back for him.
Surely MJ isn't stupid enough to take Jason Terry for Gerald Wallace. That wouldn't go over well...

Rally is dead-on here. Our only enemy is Bob Johnson. We can match and exceed anybody's best offer, and I have no doubt GW wants to stay here, so it's all in Bob's hands. If for some reason GW would rather play in Dallas, then the sign-and-trade must include Josh or Dirk, and there is no way in hell that will happen. You're correct, MJ WILL NOT take JET or Devin Harris or anybody but Josh or Dirk for GW.
Once again, our only potential enemy here is Bob. My opinon is, if he won't pay GW to keep him here, then maybe that should be a clue that we're pulling for the wrong team. Depending on the circumstances, I'm going to seriously consider dropping the Bobcats if GW isn't on the roster for the forseeable future.

Well at least this reporter knows the contract information, even if he doesn't otherwise seem to know basketball well..
"It will be difficult to get anything done with Wallace. Most insiders believe he will stay with Charlotte even though the Bobcats last week traded for Jason Richardson, who plays the same position as Wallace."
As I'm sure ALL of you on this board know, Wallace and JRich do not play the same position. Sheesh. Really, there are very few paper reporters out there with an in-depth grasp of the NBA; thank goodness for the bloggers.

I don't see Dallas happening. I can't imagine they'd be willing to give up Dirk or Josh Howard for Gerald Wallace.
I highly doubt we'd be interested in Dampier, Terry, etc...
The only legitimate deal we'd consider is Wallace for Devin Harris and Diop. That would give us a pretty quality lineup with Felton, Harris, Richardson, Okafor, Diop...
Harris would cost just as much as Wallace 2 years from now and Diop would probably get a full midlevel from someone though... so i dont see how that deal saves us much money and we'd lose a fan favorite....
Orlando wants Rashard Lewis and no one else can match 10 mil per season. Wallace is a bobcat next year unless we get an offer we cant refuse from someone...

Ziggy: "For the time being, there is nothing more important than getting Crash signed."
I don't want Devin Harris. I don't want Josh Howard. I want Gerald Wallace to stay a Bobcat. I truly think that he is undervalued at $10M per year (by bizarre NBA values) and would happily see the Cats pay him more if they need too.
I've seen enough of Gerald Wallace to appreciate the guys passion for the game. I love his tenacity, heart, tremendous talent and still emerging game. We say we need veteran leadership, a go-to guy and all that; and
Crash sits there... who is becoming all that and more before our eyes.
Really folks; Gerald Wallace is a freaking stud. I don't even want to think about him playing anywhere else. Don't screw with this MJ. Get it done before it slips away.

Meanwhile, sources within the Bobcats organization are getting more and more hopeful an announcement will soon be made on the re-signing of Wallace.
Wallace has received interest from at least eight teams, including the Bobcats, but the recent agreements made by Orlando and Milwaukee have lessened the cap space those teams have. And officials for both the Bobcats and for Wallace have said recently they are having productive discussions and could be moving closer to a deal.
BTW, check out the gaston gazette...they have 3 new articles...and USAToday has a good one talking about Felts taking over. They're all interviews/snippets from the summer league camp yesterday.

I agree, flame. The longer this goes on, the less likely I believe he's coming back. It really shouldn't be taking this long. He knows we desperately want him back, he's said he wants to be here, then what's going on? I'm speculating that it is money. I figure the Magic screwed us by signing Lewis to that ridiculously-absurd (and absurdly-ridiculous) over-inflated max contract. I think that because the Magic gave Lewis so much money, GW and Pelinka believe (and for good reason) they should get a similar deal becuase GW is the much better complete player. I'm thinking it'll take at least $13M per now, all thanks to Orlando's incompetence. MJ and Bernie are going to have to turn on their salesmen charm to get Bob to pony-up it looks like :-\
As you can tell, my confidence in getting GW back is not what it was a week ago :(

Really? There's no one left to pay him other than us and maybe Milwaukee. If they want a sign and trade it has to go through us. If the market isn't there, and it may not be, then he is going to have to take what he gets. I have to think that something has been agreed upon or at least is pretty close. I don't know though
This is what Bonnell said about it yesterday

J-Rich is said to be moving to SG from what I've heard and Wallace would take SF. Wallace will resign, no other team can give more than the MLE which is somewhere around 6 million. Charlotte could sign him to a 6 year 54-56 million dollar contract, and it should be a done deal, I don't see Charlotte doing a S&T with anyone unless it's for a person of equal of greater talent of Wallace...

6@54-56?!? That would be a magnificent signing for us, but it would be a slap in the face for GW, I think. If Lewis is going to average $15M per, we should at least give him $12M per. That said, if he's cool with $9M per, all the better for the franchise's long-term cap room! Maybe they'll wait until the 11th, and announce a deal when it can be finalized.

-- MORE FREE AGENT NEWS: Harris confirmed what The Journal Times reported on the first day of free agency: that he has inquired about both Desmond Mason and Gerald Wallace.
Harris wouldn’t go into details, only to say that he had conversations with the agents for both players. The scuttlebutt is Wallace is seeking a contract that averages around $8 million a season.
if thats the case, we are gonna end up straight stealing Gerald..
if teams are worried about an 8 million per contract, i think we can steal him for 9 million and go on about the business.

Charlotte acquired Jason Richardson (and $51 million in salary commitments) last week. This week, the Bobcats and Matt Carroll agreed in principle on a $27 million deal. And those around the Bobcats expect to re-sign Gerald Wallace very soon to a contract worth more than $60 million.
From the Gaston Gazette.
That's just BS out of Milwaukee. They're trying to rationalize on how they could steal Crash from us.

07-08-2007, 12:07 PM
Relax...
the longer we wait the more we drive his market value down and the less we will have to offer him.
Once he realizes that his true market value is only about $7 million (since no one has any cap room) he will be happier to settle for the ~10 million we offer him.
Also, we might still be looking to acquire one more free agent which means we have to sign them first before we can sign Wallace.
Trust me, theres no way we would have re-signed Matt Carroll if we weren't going to re-sign Wallace. It wouldn't make sense to throw so much money at a backup SG if we weren't planning on re-signing our star player for $9-$10....

07-08-2007, 05:36 PM
We can't drive the price down to low. He could go sign an MLE with another team and then cash in the year after. If it's the difference in a million or two per year, he probably wouldn't risk it. But it nets him an extra 3-4 million a year, playing on a contender, he might.
I don't think he'll drop that low though. I also don't think that's what's holding up the signing. My guess is there's a million dollar per year swing each way, and both sides are just making sure they're doing the right thing.

Huge Update guys...and a good one too...
NOTES: The team remains hopeful of re-signing coveted free agent Gerald Wallace. A source close to the negotiations said Sunday they were confident the Bobcats and Wallace would strike a deal by the end of the week.... Veteran Emeka Okafor worked out with the Bobcats during much of the mini-camp. He's eligible to receive a contract extension off his rookie contract, but said he didn't expect any negotiations to take place until contracts with Wallace and Matt Carroll are resolved. Carroll's agent Paul Nadel said last week that his client had agreed to a six-year contract with Charlotte for $27 million.... Sean May, who has missed 106 of the first 164 games of his two-year NBA career due to knee injuries, is confident his troubles are behind him. May, who watched some of the team's drills, said he expected to be cleared to play in time for the start of the team's training camp in October.... Among some of the free agents on the Bobcats' summer roster are former North Carolina teammates Jackie Manuel and Jawad William's and former Virginia standout Elton Brown. Manuel and Williams were teammates of current Bobcats Raymond Felton and Sean May on UNC's 2005 national championship team.
Nice to see that it's getting closer, but until it's a done deal, I want rest easy....

"Small forward Gerald Wallace (Charlotte) is the last of the upper-tier free agents yet to sign a deal. The Mavs, who would have to pull off a sign-and-trade to acquire Wallace because he'll command more than the midlevel exception, were one of about eight teams to contact his agent, Rob Pelinka, on the first day of free agency. I didn't say anything but whats up. I didn't want to bother him about the contract. But its interesting to see us worried about his future and him in there like a regular person making groceries.
At least we know he's not out taking Free Agent visits.

You might shoulda told him I've got his and his older brother's (if that's who it was) picture as little tykes, and that the sooner he re-signs, the sooner I'll remove it

This may of been what we have been waiting on.The soft cap come out to day and it around 55 milion 600
I think do all this without geting into luxery tax.
1 . Sign Wallace starting at 9 or even 10 milion to a six year gig.
2. Sign Darko to a 7.5 to 8 mil contract for 3,4,5 years
3. Sign Davidson to a mim contract about 672k
4. sign two good points from summer league at 672 k
We will still be just below the 55 milion 600k.
5. Hard cap is 67 milion so that alows us to sign OK50 to a six year starting at 12 milion per year .
All this can be done and still stay out of the lux tax.
We will just have to look at point guard the next year.
1 . Felton , point , point.
2. J- rich, Carroll,Morrison
3. Wallace, Dudley,
4. OK50, May, Walter,Davidson
5. Darko, Premoz, Hollins,
Contracts
Rich 4 years , Wallace 6 years , OK50 six years, Darko up to five years. Resign Felton next year after contracts expire and we set for the next four years.

They've been officiating for 10 days, Today players can officially be signed and the 2007-2008 cap number has been set. But nothing is done yet, whic side do you think is playing hardball? Are Gerald's people asking for a max (or close to max ) deal or are Bernie, MJ and company trying to lowball Crash into something barely above the MLE since there isn't really anyone else left that can outbid them?
What are your thoughts?

No i just think we have been waiting on the cap to come out to make our moves. I think the deal for Wallace has been done for a long while now . We have been tight liped about next moves waiting on the cap to come out . Now thet it is i expect us to get a point and or a big to go along with Wallace now thet we know how much we can spend

how hilarious is it, that Orlando and Charlotte both had tons of cap space.... Orlando goes out and spends 126 freaking million dollars on a player, while we wont spend more than 60 on Gerald and we will get similiar if not better production.
We can make moves next year, while Orlando is toast... between Howard and Lewis... they have like 9 dollars and 44 cents left for the next 3 years.

I might be partial because I am from Maryland but we can get Francis for CHEAP

Think how sick that would be. He just got 30 mil from Portland and his value is super low.

I'm 50/50 on Francis, I think he could go a lot cheaper, but he probably wants to start, and right now I watch Felton, I'd rather sign a true veteran back-up, plus francis can become a ball hog at times...

Couldn't have said it better myself! Many thanks to go around. I'm proud of MJ for putting the pressure on Bob, and for Bob to have the faith in MJ to listen to him and spend the money (an incredible value!!). If it weren't for Bernie, GW wouldn't have been here in the first place, and probably wouldn't be the Crash that we know today! This is just phenomenal!!!! Rob Pelinka is my favorite Michigan alumn!! Plus, I get to keep my auto cards on display!! JUBILATION!!!!!

Agree, Must. I always thought GW was worth 12-13M per, basing that on the horrendous Lewis 15M per deal. I think it illustrates a couple of points:
1. GW really DOES like it here!
2. GW is as much of a class act as we perceive him to be. He doesn't want to cripple us cap-wise, so he takes less than he's worth. Being an Astros fan, the analogy I see is like the contract Bagwell signed in '95. He signed a "hometown discount" to stay in Houston, but we rewarded him with a bigger contract in '00 I think it was. I hope we do this for GW after this contract. It would be the classy thing to do, plus he'd be able to retire a Bobcat!
3. MJ has something cooking for next year with that extra money that wasn't given to Crash. That's right, Bob, don't get too comfy counting the money you saved on Crash just yet :P In all seriousness, though, Bob really has come through for us this off-season.

i was gettin ready to run a thread entitled how stupid are the Orlando Magic and put Rashard and Crash's stats side by side to make them feel ridiculous.
But that chart should do the trick.
As much as we rib bernies coaching and face it.... we (myself very much included) gave him pure hell while he was coach. But man you gotta give this guy some credit... hes been the architect behind this team since the get go, and now Jordan comes in and starts getting most of the credit.
But Bernie, found this guy, built this team on hard work and team play, then made sure we kept him, at a very reasonable price. He has made a couple bone head moves, but hell thats gambling probally. Right now we have a very solid YOUNG, team that can grow together for years, and we are still not cap screwed. He deserves a lot of credit here.

But i would all so like to add with out M.J. and his final desinions to turn lose of the money none of us would be this happy. Vincent and M.J. AND Bernie did a great job with the two draft picks in Dudley and Davidson. It looks like to me the whole organisiton is turning around .

Those years the fans didnt need music, the blasted that joint with voices alone. It was like Golden State last year in the playoffs... Only we were a below .500 team and it was regular season.
Between Duke fans, and Tarheel fans and everyone in between... we should be loud every night.

Getting Wallace re-signed for $9.5 million seems like very good value.
I'm glad the Bobcats waited one more year before they locked themselves into Wallace, I think everyone is a little more sold on him after the 2nd half of the season he had.
We just have to hope he stays healthy and continues to develop offensively. Also, he still has some work to do on defense as well. His steals/blocks numbers are certainly flashy but he's predominantly an "off the ball" defender and he still needs to get better on the ball...
