View Full Version : Bigs that are left?

If we still want to sign another big, we may be running out of options. Not that we were gunning for any of these guys, but Mikki Moore just signed with Sacramento and Magloire is supposedly signing a deal with the Nets. Joe Smith just signed with the Bulls.

Verejao appears to be resigning with the Cavs, only because no other team has more than the MLE to resign him.

There aren't many other bigs left beyond a few aging vets (Kelvin Cato, Mutombo) and question marks like Chris Mihm.

Mihm actually might be an o.k. option if we could sign him to a short contract on the cheap. He was hurt all last year, but when he's healthy he can get some boards and block a couple of shots. He can also score a little. My guess is, if he signs a short, cheap contract, he does it with a team like the Suns, who have been looking at him. Still, if he runs out of options, it might not be a bad idea to get him cheap and run him with a chip on his shoulder.

Another idea would be to sign Mihm and then trade Mihm and Harrington to Phoenix for Kurt Thomas. Since we're under the cap, I think we can absorb the other half of his contract. We could also ask Phoenix kindly for one of next year's draft picks. Kurt Thomas might more of an investment than we want for a guy his age, but he would allow our young bigs more time to develop and give us a consistent rebounder at the 4 or 5 to pair with Okafor.

Another guy that might be fun is a dirt cheap contract on Jake Tsakalidis. If nothing else, it brings interesting symmetry to he and Knight's career.

Who else? What do you think?

If we signed Mihm we wouldn't be able to turn around and trade him like that. We wouldn't be able to trade him until 3 months after we signed him.

Nice point. :g: So, in the middle of October, we'll get Thomas!

Sign Mihm. I think that he would fit in well with our current team.

Mihm for a short term contract.

Hell, I'd be happy with Melvin Ely and think he would be a great scorer @ the PF spot....especially in this type of offense as he would excel.

Why the hell did we trade him for Eric F*cking Williams?

Don't forget, San Antonio also threw in a conditional 2nd round pick in the 2033 draft

i wouldn't mind taking a shot at mutumbo....he'd be a great defensive sub for brezec...or if he proves he still has fuel left in the tank i guess he could start

i think thats bernies biggest blunder. i think he let pride get in the way there... he clearly didnt like Ely and traded him on principle i think. even though Ely was useless in San Antonio, thats two players Bernie has let leave without good reason that have won championships.

We traded for Williams because he has an expiring contract, which enabled us to get J Rich and resign Carrol and Crash all while having $$$ still left over.

Ely's deal was expiring too but basically we picked up a 2nd round pick for free. Can't fault Bernie for that deal, Ely was useless anyway. He couldn't rebound or defend at all.

There will be a cozy bench spot for him on some other roster...

no one can ever grab a rebound nor defend when he's on a snooze....

Well if we don't start going after anyone, we may just end up with Chris Webber....

Scot Pollard would be a decent backup to replace Voskuhl and may come cheaper and for a shorter contract.

Anyone else remember Jamal Sampson? :D

As for a point guard, Darrell Armstrong is a hard nosed leader and still is athletic. He's a glue guy...

What would you guys think of Orien Greene? I've been reading up on him and he sounds like a steal for a backup...

I'd rather have Voskuhl back over Pollard...at point guard...Orien Greene isn't a bad choice, but what about the recently released Daniel Ewing, he's a good defender, and with a little work could possibly, maybe become something as a back up...He's cheap, and he's local, plus maybe Patrick Ewing will get us some support as well...

Reason why I suggest Pollard over Jake is because Pollard won't demand a long term contract. We do need that down low blue collar bruiser big man, however.
