View Full Version : Did we really almost trade Wallace?

According to this article, we would have gotten Richard Jefferson. Apparently MJ nixed the deal...

http://www.nypost.com/seven/07202007/sports/nets/deals_fall_through__big_3_stays_intact_nets_fred_k erber.htm

...or, it may have all just been rumor.

It's the Post, so I doubt it.

The three-way talks flourished a few weeks ago, and one source insisted Charlotte part-owner Michael Jordan squashed the deal.

Regardless, more reason to love MJ.

Yeah, after hearing this, I can say that he's growing on me.

I don't think that deal would go that far. The only team who gets better is Nets in this deal. The others are dumbasses. Anyway, thanks MJ. This would have been definitely the worst move of our franchise history.

I think this article makes it sound alot closer than it ever got. Here's how I think it went:

Lakers to Nets: Ok, we'll send you Odom and Charlotte sends us Wallace. You send Jefferson to Charlotte.

Nets: Ok, I'll call MJ. (Calls MJ): Hey, the Lakers and us are working on a deal. We send you Jefferson for Gerald Wallace, who'll go to the Lakers. How's that sound?

MJ: HELL NO! WE DON'T WANT YOUR TRASH! (Slams the phone down).

That's what I'm guessing too.

Although, as the GM of Portland said, you listen to every phone call. But I think you're right. Ultimately, listening to it and considering is far different from almost agreeing to it.

Richard Jefferson would never want to go to the Bobcats; he only wants to play for "real" teams ::).

Wouldn't it be ironic though for Jefferson to be traded after he said that Wallace was just an "ok" player?

If he didn't already know, I'd love to be the first person to let RJ know that this trade fell through because there would be a significant drop-off in talent, ability, and motivation if we were to acquire him for GW. In a world where the good guys normally don't succeed, and the bad guys prevail, it's great how this RJ/GW "feud" has played out!

Also, I imagine other scenarios similar to this (though with not quite the poetic justice of the other) existed at some time and may or may not ever be told, seeing as how 8 or so teams were interested in GW.

Agreed Beagle. While resigning him was our top priority, it was smart of Jordan to at least thing the worst case scenario and attempt to make some preliminary estimates on Wallace's value. Things are showing me that Jordan is learning the game of being a successful G.M. pretty quickly (hopefully I'm right and it stays that way...knock on wood.)

It might have been proposed by LAL & NJN, but I don't think we EVER gave it consideration; Crash WAS coming back to Charlotte.

The transcript from yesterday's media day is out, and all thru it Crash says how his main focus was always in coming back:

http://www.nba.com/bobcats/conference_wallace_070720.html

My favorite part:

(On if there were any better offers)
I don’t think so. If there were better offers, I didn’t want to see them, I wanted things to work out here. We talked to Michael (Jordan) and Bernie (Bickerstaff) as much as we could to try to get things to work out for me here.

Gerald Wallace said trying to guard both he and Jason Richardson together will create matchup problems for teams similar to a famous duo from the past.

"It's like Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan -- you can't guard both of them at the same time." While we have our doubts about the two of them duplicating MJ's and Pippen's exploits, teams are going to have fits dealing with Crash and J-Rich. Wallace, who re-signed with Charlotte, would have signed a contract but ended up with the L.A. Lakers in a sign-and-trade, according to a New York Post report. The report suggested that the Lakers would have sent Lamar Odom to the New Jersey Nets and the Nets would have sent Richard Jefferson to the Bobcats.

Mentions the trade, but also talks about him and J-Rich teaming up, and since there is this thread already for him, didn't want to make another one...

I was curious as to what Lakers fan's thought about this deal since they would've been the team receiving Crash. It looks like the vast majority of them would have preferred to keep Lamar Odom.

LakersGround (http://forums.lakersground.net/viewtopic.php?t=45128&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)

It appears that the only fans that would've been happy with this deal are the NJ Nets fans

I have heard people comment that this trade came from our end, but there is no way that Mike was pursueing a trade for a clown that has openly criticized the city of Charlotte and our star big man for no reason. Then we give up our best player for the clown. I really hope Mike doesn't :burp: on the job.

i've always hated jefferson, because he called Wallace a fluke in one game. If Jordan did that trade, I would've been piss. I don't like that loser RJ. It would've been a bad trade anyway. All he can do is score(sort of like J-Rich but j-Rich is cool). That MJ givng Newjersey the pimp hand comment was hilarious  take that RJ*SMACK* LOL.......I'll give him another slap just for looking stupid*SMACK*

I tried like crazy one night, and I couldn't get anything. I know he said it, and I know it was in print because the next Bobcats game, Stephanie Ready asked GW about the comments, and he handled it with great class and basically brushed it off. So anybody who can track this down will get major REP points!!!!!

"Gerald Wallace is a flop. He's not very talented, and that's what he does."
-- Nets forward Richard Jefferson on Wallace, whose Emmy-winning flop got Nets center Nenad Krstic ejected from Tuesday's game with the Bobcats.
