Im new to the site.. was wondering if the young PG CJ Watson has shown any flashes and if it looks like he will make the 15 man roster. He had a lot of potential in college and I always thought he could be a solid back up PG in the NBA... I haven't seen any practices or pre-season games so I was just looking for other opinions.
Thanks

Welcome to the board! He was just being talked about in the game thread. CJ seems to play with heart which is always a good thing. I don't know who we'd take off the roster to make room for him though.

Unless the Coach knows something we all dont, I am more impressed with him than McInnis. It surprises me, but it is true.

with 15 total players on the roster (12 active for game day). i'd rather have young guys on the inactive list then veterans who won't have much to do with the team. i hope cj and a couple other younger guys get a shot at making the team.

is that the kid from tennessee?
if so i like him as a good back up point... he is solid if unspectacular but runs the team from what i remember

Yeah. He started all four years at Tennessee and is one of their all time assists leaders. I think he could make a solid back-up to Felton if given the opportunity.
I'm not a very big McInnis fan and I hope CJ gets some minutes in the final pre-season games.

The way I count it, they will have to cut someone in order to keep him. Which stinks to me....Wish we could cut Harrington.... :g:

WE SHOULD CUT HIM! (to make room for a roster spot)

welcome joe!
Watson really doesn't have a shot, and it's due to no free roster slots rather than any slight on him.
If anyone has even an outside shot it'd have to be the big Watkins.

Spectre: With the way Jermareo is playing and the fact that Othello is apparently going to play not going to retire, I am not so sure that Watkins may not be destined for Developemental League and the CJ may actuallly get the spot

D League players count against the 15 man roster.
Right now we have signed to guaranteed deals:
Felton/Touche'/DA
JRich/Hammer
Crash/Ammo/Dudley
Mek/Fabio/Davidson/Harrington/May
Hollins/Primoz
We're not cutting May, and we don't get an extra spot regardless of an injury exception.  The only possibility is cutting Harrington (which I seriously doubt), and if he was cut I'd think his spot would go to a big...either Watkins or FA.
There just isn't room for another guard. Nothing at all against CJ, and I'd probably rather him than Touche'...but oh well.

Damn, Harrigton is the biggest waste of a roster space.

I think we are kinda stuck with what we have because I dont see the team sacrificing the money to get rid of him and then sign someone else which would cost more money..... :g:

Spectre: You're right. For some reason I thought we had one more spot available without having to cut someone or buy someone out. Guess not. That really does kinda leave CJ out, unless we did buy out someone. With the strong performance of Jermareo though, it may not be so unlikely that we do something and go after CJ rather than a big. But that also causes us trouble if we wanted to go after Esteban Batista if Boston cuts him loose as is probable.

Spectra i thought we got a injrry exception for May. He counts as far as our cap goes but not against the 15 man roster this year. I thought we got that exception from the NBA. I all so heard coach V wanted Harrington to retire to give us another spot. If we had two spots whitch im not sure of i think only one. Watson would be a good pick up to send to the NDBL for a year .As of now Felton could use a push .OMG

Guys it busted me too. I even went thru the CBA FAQ and found the section...here it is:
NBA Salary Cap FAQ (http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#12)
DISABLED PLAYER EXCEPTION -- This exception allows a team which is over the cap to acquire a replacement for a disabled player who will be out for the remainder of that season (if the player is disabled between July 1 and November 30) or the following season (if the player is disabled after November 30). This exception can also be granted in the event of a player's death. This exception can only be used to acquire one player. The maximum salary for the replacement player is 50% of the injured player's salary, or the average salary, whichever is less (see question number 24 for the definition of "average salary"). Approval from the league (based on a determination by an NBA-designated physician) is required for this exception to be used. This exception can be used to sign a free agent, or to create room to accept a salary in trade. When used for trade, the team may acquire a player whose salary (including any trade bonus) is up to 100% of this exception plus $100,000 (not 125%). Also see question number 20 for more information on the availability and use of this exception.
If a player is disabled between July 1 and November 30, the team must acquire the replacement player within 45 days. If the player is disabled between December 1 and June 30, then the team has until October 1 to sign a replacement. If the disabled player comes back sooner than expected, then he may be activated immediately, and the replacement player is not affected. However, if the disabled player comes back before the exception is used, then the exception is lost.
Teams sometimes have had difficulty getting the NBA to approve an injury exception. For example, Danny Manning tore an ACL toward the end of the 1997-98 season, yet the NBA did not approve the Suns for this exception. More recently, the Magic did not receive this exception in 2003 for Grant Hill. However, this exception was granted in the 1999 offseason to San Antonio, so they could replace Sean Elliott, who was disabled due to kidney problems. This exception was also granted to Charlotte soon after Bobby Phills was killed.
Don't confuse this exception with the salary cap relief teams can apply for a year after losing a player to a career-ending injury or death (see question number 53). This exception allows a team to acquire a replacement player. The salary cap relief removes a contract from the books.
It seems to have been set up expressly for getting around the salary cap. When I first read it I ASSUMED it'd free up an actual roster spot; after what the Blazers' GM has said it seems that assumption was wrong.
