Tony Battie has gone down with an season-ending rotator cuff injury. The Magic applied for, and got, an exception that will allow them to pick up another player for 50% of his $5.2million salary.

Now, the thing that gets me is, they had 15 players on their roster, yet it seems as though they will be able to pick up another player without waiving anyone. They lose one player. We lose two. They can pick up another player. We cannot. Can anyone explain to me how their situation is different, or if we dropped the ball on the request, or if perhaps we were just denied (read "F'd") by the NBA (in a manner similar to the Houston game)?

According to the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement, the injury exception allows a team that is over the salary cap to acquire a replacement for a disabled player injured between July 1 and November 30. The exception can only be used to acquire one player and is worth 50 percent of the injured player's salary.
Because Battie is making $5.2 million this season, the Magic get an exception worth $2.6 million. That could help them lure another power forward or center via free agency or in a trade.
booo.

Othello: You are a greedy bum who is screwing your team and fellow Bobcat players, not to mention us, the fans!!
The last 2 games, Coach has pushed othello to get off his ass and get in the game. He is refusing saying "I'm not ready". Greedy fat SOB!!!! you are costing us the opportunity to get a 16th if you would at least try! Try and if you can't make it, so be it. We can get a 16th and at least get someone to help us.

His salary is a little over $2.3 mil this yr. if we got the exception, then we could hire someone for $1.15 mil, which is not chump change and could get us someone who can actually contribute something in a positive way to the team.

Isn't that around the vet minimum? We can offer that regardless of cap; the main issue is still the roster spot.
Speaking of which, I've never seen it mentioned specifically that ORL got a roster exception, but their comments seem to suggest they did.
Best thing is for his fatness to retire due to injury...he gets paid by insurance and we get an open spot.
