View Full Version : How bad do we REALLY need a big man?

If Hollins continues playing like he has and Primo keeps slowly (VERY slowly) looking more like he did a few years ago, then do we need another big man that bad?
I'm pretty sure Harrington is going to continue being awful, and I hope we release him and get a decent big man, yet I'm worried that we might rush into things and trade Herrmann, Dudley, or someone of that caliber for someone.
Basically, if we are forced to keep Harrington on the bench all year. Would it be worth trading for a back up big man?
*Boredom topic*

In order to get into an Eastern contender role, a big man is necessary. Unlike the Celtics who can completely neglect their center position (although Perkins is better than any center we have) we must have a solid starting five to contend.
However, I don't think that any trades are necessary at the moment. Another trade would put us in a hard place to resign Okafor, and I doubt any big we get from trading could replace Okafor's potential and ability. Instead, I say we keep the men we have and go big in the draft, and if that does not work then we try to trade. I don't know what the Free Agent market looks like for next year but we better be working hard to pick up a quality big when the time comes.

Fabio for Patrick O'Bryant.
Our entire season rests on Mek staying healthy for the entire year. POB isn't a savior, but if the unthinkable happens we'd be glad for every big guy we have that ain't Harrington or Primoz. If Fabio continues to get no burn we'll end up losing him for nothing.
BTW, this would be revenue neutral, but regardless of what we do Mek can be resigned due to bird rights.

we have Mek, Hollins, Davidson, Primoz , Harrington, we can make it this season but at the end of the year we will have to do something:
1) Resign Mek, of course.
2) Resign Hollins, last year of his contract , or let him go?
3) Let Primoz and Harrington go
4) Draft or sign better Big's
To get to the next level we have to do something about that..... :g:

I know Bobcat fans hate hearing this, but I think we're still in a growth year rather than a legitimate playoff year. As such, it might be better to work with what we have, developing Hollins, Dudley, and Davidson with those minutes. The only draw back is the strain it puts on Okafor. He doesn't like having his minutes limited because of foul trouble (or the possibility of foul trouble.) We need to keep him happy and productive to sign him.
There are some pretty good bigs in the upcoming draft. Between them and the free agent class, we should be able to get a quality big man. I definitely agree that there's no reason to trade our good, productive youth for one.
The other question is May. Do we stand behind him and hope he gets better or plan our future excluding him?

I think its a 3 year plan. This being year 1, we could make the playoffs this year but wont go very far.
next year work a few new guys into the system (bigs). Will make the playoffs and do good.
Year 3 pick up those to fill the loose ends and become a true contender!.....
This is what I see going on...... :g:

That's what I'm thinking, but I include previous years into what I've been thinking as a 5-6 year plan.

I agree with you, DNB. We'll definintely take the playoffs if they come, but there's no reason to do anything drastic tradewise this season. As I've said before, if we don't lose anyone else to injury, and other east conf. teams lose some guys like we have, I think we have a pretty good shot. Nonetheless, we desperately need a post-scoring inside threat to contend and win consistently, but I think we make do with what we have unless there's an offer that knocks our socks off.

I agree with Spectre hear , If Fabio is not geting burn . POB would be a great pick up. If we could pull off that trade. Then we could easly let Primoz and Harington walk. True the frunt line would be very young but some what productive. Sign Jameison next year at a reasonable price[ He wnnts to play at home] Draft a decent big. Let Mcinnis go and pick up two young back up points as Felton should be a vetran by then.
By adding P.O.B , Jameison, 2 back up points one a combo,And drafting a big we shoucd contend for a championship. Verdick still out on May.

With the way Hollins has been improving the need for a big isn't as bad as it was at the beginning of the season, but it's still our biggest need as of right now. If GS was willing to trade POB for Fabio and a 2nd then I'm all for it.

i certainly don't want to waste roster space for 2 big men (slov butterfly & O.H.) who are unproductive...

alright after this game tonight vs. the wizards, its definitly certain we need a big man fast!! everytime i looked up i swear jamison was getting an offensive rebound...they got wayyyy too many rebounds an they were even without haywood....iono wat we could do to trade for a big man but sumthin needs to happen soon or this year is gunna suck
i would give up othella, morrison, this years an next years 1st for a good big man
but giving up both 1st rounders means it would have to be a good big man...i no we still need cap room fro mek but we dont need a pat o'bryant....the player needs to be GOOD and sumthone we can actualy count on
who am i talking about?? i dont no....will this happen??? no....but if we made a trade it needs to b worth it

...mostly that is because we normally only have one big man in the paint, either Okafor or Hollins. We play small ball most of the time.
Sam is content to go with the 3 guard offense regardless of who we are playing or what the match-ups are.
