Suns, Heat agree to Shaq trade

No longer confident they can win a championship with their current roster, the Phoenix Suns are close to completing a blockbuster trade that will bring them Shaquille O'Neal, a source with knowledge of the negotiations said Tuesday.

O'Neal is scheduled to travel to Phoenix aboard a private plane Wednesday, the source said, to undergo an MRI on his ailing left hip. If he passes the physical, the Suns will complete the trade by sending Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat.

The Miami Herald first reported the Suns and Heat were in serious trade discussions involving O'Neal.

Frustrated by Miami's dramatic dropoff this season – the Heat own the NBA's worst record at 9-37 – O'Neal had begun telling teammates he wanted to be traded but never thought a deal would come to fruition, a Heat source said.

The trade represents a dramatic change for the Suns, whose run-and-gun, small-ball style had revolutionized the league in recent seasons. That same style, however, had failed to bring the Suns a championship, and team officials had become increasingly skeptical about their chances of contending without giving Amare Stoudemire some help on the front line.

While praising recent improvement in Stoudemire's defense last week, Suns general manager Steve Kerr said the team still was doing Stoudemire a "disservice" by playing him at center instead of his more natural power forward position.

While last week's loss to a San Antonio team that was missing Tony Parker again raised some doubts, it was the Lakers' acquisition of Memphis forward Pau Gasol on Friday that ultimately spurred the Suns to consider aggressively looking for another big man. League sources said the Suns also had conversations about Charlotte's Emeka Okafor and Philadelphia's Samuel Dalembert in recent days.

O'Neal, 35, still is a physical presence but seems a poor fit for Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo offense. Suns coaches, however, watched film of O'Neal on Tuesday, the source said, and came away thinking O'Neal's strong passing skills from the high post would work well in their half-court schemes. The Suns also have shown increasingly more confidence in playing forward Boris Diaw next to Stoudemire and think that combination will suffice when O'Neal isn't on the floor.

Ive heard it but I will believe it when I see it (the Shaq trade)

No way they would put him on that team. It makes no sense basketball wise and no sense financially.

Too bad we didnt ship out okafor for marion.

wow its starting to look true. doesnt make any sense to me, really bad deal for the suns. I would be pissed as a fan.

EDIT: Hahahah, I just said to myself are you kidding me? as I put on espn, and then when I clicked the NBA front page, the screen says, "Are you kidding me?"

This is weird, really weird

We should have done something with the Suns if possible. I think this will come back to bite us in the ass. We will see.

We don't have the salary to do a Marion trade unless we want to include Crash or JSwish in the deal...and I doubt we're that stupid. Most of the guys we would want are BYC which also makes a trade extremely difficult.

I'm VERY happy we turned them away. Mek's just now starting to assert himself; if he can stay consistent doing it I'd prefer him over anything the Suns could send our way.

Okafor would have been better for the Suns, financially, basketball, youth better than Shaq but we don't have the contracts for it to work for Marion. Dude can kinda run, Shaq is a statue, who knows what Kerr is doing or how D'Antoni will make it work.

Yeah, not really sure what the Suns are thinking, but we'll see how it ends up.

I almost think the scenario goes like this:

Kerr, "We can get Shaq for Marion? Let's do it!"
D'Antoni, "What the hell am I supposed to do with this?"

Very happy we didn't give up Okafor for Marion. The Matrix is a NICE player for sure; but shot-blockers like OK50 are pretty hard to replace. We need other types of players; like a defending wing and a defensive PF (such as Marion ^-^; but still I wouldn't give away a top Center for either one.

To me, Marion is interesting and a combo of J-Rich/Crash/The Matrix at the 2 thru 4 would be fun to watch, but his salary ($18 mil/yr) is way, way too much for a player whose last name isn't Duncan, Bryant or James.
I'm glad we passed on the deal.

top center is arguable, however, the deal would have been difficult to work out. Whatever, we are what we are

marion's age & contract - no thanks. While emeka may have a slightly exaggerated sense of self worth, Marion is one of the leagues biggest egos. Resigning oak will be a burden, but Marion is looking to get paid in an even bigger way.

Side note: anyone else see the cribs episode with Marion where he showed off his custom interior in his car? The Matrix embroidered in the seats. Nice.

I saw something once that had Chris Paul showing off his car (don't know if it was cribs - I think it was a pre-draft thing, so it was a while ago). Anyways, he had CP3 embroidered on the headrest.

Yeah, it's a tough life when you have so much money you run out of things to do with it...

As far as the theoretical trade: thank god we didn't go for that crap. Mek for Marion is downgrade of signficant proportions, not to mention adding yet another big contract. Unless it makes sense and fits in with the future of the franchise, no more trades!!

Ever.

I feel like it's a necessary to remind the franchise that it is never okay to make a trade that doesn't make sense.

Anyone else ever, ever seen Marion make his own shot? With him not having Nash, I don't know how good of a player he will be.

What bothers me is with him not having a true point guard, what will his production look like? Check out his last 3 point guards he's played with: Kidd, Marbury (in prime) and Nash.

Ever play with a bum named Jason Williams or Chris Quinn? That'll be an eyeopening experience for him I'm sure.

Flash will just need to kick out more. When he's driving he's almost impossible to stop and that causes the defense to sag into the paint. Marion will be a big recipient of that just like he was with Nash.

I agree though...he'll miss Steve Nash a lot. He's a good player, but minus Nash I think Crash is better.

Anybody would miss Steve Nash.

You're right, but I hope Wade doesn't figure that out.

Marion is an idiot.

Not only is he missing a chance to win a title...

He'll be lucky to get a long term deal for more than $10/mil a season once he gets exposed without a top notch PG.

He always talks about wanting to be the top scroing option.

Hello, he was the top scoring option the year Phoenix won 20 games.
