View Full Version : Starting Carroll over Dudley

I saw this topic on another board and figured I'd address it here if any of you were wondering.

Some folks were saying that we should start Dudley ahead of Carroll, moving Richardson over to shooting guard. With no considerations for the bench, that makes sense for a lot of reasons: gives us another big who can pass, improves rebounding, and probably makes us a more athletic team.

However, that would leave us with Hollins and Davidson off the bench to spell all of our bigs. (Oh, did I forget Othella?! I'm going to keep forgetting him.) Where as, with Carroll starting, we still have Earl Boykins and Anderson to spell either guard spot, plus the ability to shift down. Basically, I think they Vincent believes we need to have a couple of folks who can rebound on the bench. Our guards can also play bigger minutes, generally.

Given that this yr is basically lost, I would much prefer Dudley to Carroll. I do understand the reasoning you mention, but it is too late to bother with thatthis yr and we might as well get Dudley the minutes. He brings a fire, hustle and grit to the team which we desperately need. I dont want to extinguish that flame. I believe overall that Dudley brings both offense, defense and rebounding to our game whereas Carroll is all about having a 3 pt shooter on the floor for offense. Dudley is much more valuable.

I'd start Matt at least until Crash is back. J-rich is more effective as a SF and Matt is really the only other starting material at the 2 spot. I'd still give Dudley the same amount of minutes as Matt (Probably around 25-30).

I agree that JSwish is the best SF we have with Crash out, but Hammer's defense is atrocious.

Up to me I'd start Duds. The offense moves better the more passers we have, and Duds also finds the spots to grab rebounds...another weakness. I'd still give Hammer significant minutes, but I'd prefer to go a little bigger and better defensively.

Felts Vs Calderon
Swish Vs Parker
Dude Vs Moon
EO50 Vs Bargs
Nazzy Vs Rasho

Plays to our advantage IMO. More so than Hammer Vs Parker and Swish Vs Moon.

Right, but then we only have Davidson and Hollins as moderate backups at the F spot. I'm not arguing the starting line-up at all. I think Dudley as a starter would be better if we could play our guys 48 minutes. However, both E50 and Nazr can get in foul trouble and get winded. It would be better to have a more dynamic player like Dudley playing the PF spot.

In other words, we need to consider depth and rotation.

Ultimately, I think their minutes will work out about the same. But if Dudley, E50, and Nazr get winded or in foul trouble, which is more likely to occur to them than Felton, Richardson, or Carroll, I'd rather have some pretty good talent coming in for them.

We won starting Matt and giving Dudley near same minutes as Matt...just like what I suggested :P

I think Dudley may feel more comfortable getting minutes but not starting yet, ala Ben Gordon.

Whatever it was, it worked. Great to see that kind of game from both those guys.

Agreed! As long as they get equal minutes. I really feel that Dudley can take this time and start to really command some attention. Remember how Fabio did last yr? While Crash is out, Dudley can really start to make a name for himself as a good Rookie. This will go far towards his
PT and contribution next season.

The Wallace injury could definitely be a blessing in disguise (deep, deep undercover disguise!) by allowing other guys to blossom. We also have to rely on ball movement more than letting Wallace play isolation. If we can synthesize his style of play with the better ball movement, he'll have an easier time of scoring and hopefully less injuries.

Isn't this team SANS McINNIS (that's FRENCH! for WITHOUT MCINNIS) just a whole lot more wonderful than with McInnis!? Like night and day; macro and micro; apples and oranges; sucking and blowing...rofl...I'm just so full of happy that we have a team to watch again...finally I can fire my therapist; the fees were eating me alive.
