View Full Version : Our current image in the league...

Over the last couple of weeks I've seen numerous negative comments on the Bobcats. I know we haven't lit the league up but we haven't been the worst team in the league in any of our years either. So having said that I don't understand why we seem to be considered the worst team. Some examples are this...

A comment from a fan in The Sporting News this past week...

"Nothing against Kobe Bryant, but it's a travesty that Lebron James finished only fourth in the MVP voting. Take him off the Cavaliers and what do you have? A team one step above the Charlotte Bobcats.".

Then in a Poll also done through The Sporting News asking "Will Larry Brown get the Bobcats into the 2009 playoffs?"

57 percent of The Sporting News staff said NO! And even worse....
72 percent of the fans polled said NO!

There also was a comment from an analyst on ESPN (Can't remember which talking head it was, It actually wasn't Stephen A. Smith this time) also talking about the MVP race... something along the lines that although Chris Paul has been amazing throughout the playoffs his Hornets team without him aren't as bad as say the Charlotte Bobcats....

Again, I realize we have a long way to go but these folks seem to try and make it out as we're the absolute worst in the league for some time....

ITS TIME TO PROVE THOSE BITCHES WRONG!!!!

Damn right, most of these "analysts" probably haven't even seen the bobcats play at all, and are too lazy to see that there are far worse teams out there. Charlotte is a small market team and until we make some noise in the playoffs (next year) we will continue to be a punch line.

We've never even finished with the worst record in our division (well, tied for it once, but we still weren't the lowest in the conference).

I'm so sick of this crap.

Its pure laziness on the part of the "experts".
There are some teams out there that are really bad that don't wind up repeatedly as the butt of jokes
T-Wolves, Clippers, Knicks, Bucks, Grizzlies, Sonics just for starters.

sigh.. These types of comments from the press will end next season when we're kicking butt.

All that kinda crap just pisses me off two. It's no way in hell a Cleavland team with out James is better than us . And it takes a friggen fool to even think that. Next year i expect us to compeat with them even though they have James . Why in the hell is J Rich so under rated hear . It's not that much damn differance in both players cabiler of games last year but Rich sucks and James is a MVP , WTF is wroung with this. Rich averaged over 20 ppg James averaged about 24ppg. But Rich is a scrub and James is a friggen MVP, WTF. Why in the hell does others get all the friggen hype.
Next who ever in the hell took that pole and said that 72percent of the Charlotte FANS said we would not make the playoffs is a friggen liar. And ill bet any thing the SOB don't have nothing to back it up. Just more junk to try and destory the organisation.
Smith is friggen stupid . He sure would make one hell of a coach, craping on us like he did about the J Rich trade. Any sane person looking back would say that move was a friggen steal . Golden state all ready is talking about moving Wright . This shows you what a genius Smith really is.

As far as Brown, any fool can tell hes six wins than coach Biscuit, without any changes. Damn add a healthy May , Morrison, and the eight pick in the draft . With out adding NOTHING else at all ,we a 500 team or better. Where in the hell do all thease fools come from. Do they spend thair life thinking up all that stupid shit........................

We're the only team out of the 30 in the NBA who have never made the playoffs. Those guys have every right to say whatever the hell they want until that changes.

I tend to agree here. We're small market, we have no marquee talent, we are new and young. Yeah we have MJ as an owner. Yeah now we have Larry Brown now, but like in our own home town it will take wins to change the perception. I almost quit watching one of the only shows I watched religiously, and I think anyone who has heard the clip thats a fan knows what I'm talking about: Entourage! Freakin Ari, "I didn't go to the Lakers game because they were playing the f*ing Bobcats" Bastard.

Think about it like this, you know when they aren't selling tickets and people aren't showing up at the arena they advertise the other team during the game? What do they say when the Bobcats are coming to town in other NBA cities? Sure, J-Rich is a known guy, Gerald is getting there and Emeka was rookie of the year but I wouldn't get excited if I wasn't a Bobcats fan....

I understand your desire to see our team in the playoffs and I definitely believe we should be there but I don't think they (sports writers/commentators) have "every right to say whatever the hell they want". Thats like saying until Lebron James wins a NBA championship he is on par with say another former Cav Danny Ferry... it's just not true; so uh... that doesn't quite work.

My point was that somehow we have been labeled as the worst team in the NBA when in our short existence we haven't been the worst team. I think we would all agree however that the team should take the comments to heart and use it as motivation along with the upcoming changes and show everyone just how wrong they are.

Plus, add in the fact the Bobcats are the newest team, and therefore the least recognized "brand" in the NBA. We've all heard countless analysts over the years still call our team the Charlotte Hornets. It's just something the fans and the organization are going to have to put up with until we win, develop a brand, and become an established franchise.

The pot shots will likely continue, but be content to say, "Fuck 'em; we're not going anywhere."

Oh yeah, I agree that it sucks and I hate it. I just see where it comes from. I see we just have to win. I am convinced that's all we can do. NBA teams no longer do anything to set themselves apart.

I don't think it's a hatred of our team. I think it's writers trying to be witty or funny and referencing the NBA fracnhise they believe to be the least familiar among their readers. The Sporting News did a piece (of garbage) on our team back in December and called us the most insignificant franchise in professional sports. Of course, one week later we had ESPN's All-Access: Charlotte and we were everywhere on the World Wide Leader from television to radio to ESPN.com. After that came MJ's "practice seen round-the-world" and suddenly we didn't seem to be quite so irrelevent. Player of the Week honors for JRich, a naming rights deal, a broadcast rights deal and hiring Larry Brown in less than 7 week's time put us in the national conversation as well at the end of the season.

We're going to be fine. It's going to take a little more time, but the pieces are starting to fit and the picture is becoming clearer.

I think you're right Micheal. Sports writers see us as the demographic that is at the same time the easiest butt of jokes and also the least amount of readers that will be alienated by our team being mocked.

However, look what happened to the Hawks and the Hornets in the span of this season. Early on, their attendance was horrific and no one gave them any credit. Then they made the playoffs, attendance skyrockets and they gain respect.

We're definitely headed in the right direction.
