Looks like were in the running for the 2010 all star game, figures I probably wont be here anymore...
"NBA commissioner David Stern said last week that a decision on the 2010 game is expected to be announced at the beginning of the upcoming season. While the Celtics have looked into the process of hosting an All-Star Game for the first time since 1964, a team source said no official application has been filed.
The 2009 All-Star Game is in Phoenix, and projected candidates for 2010 include Dallas, Toronto, Charlotte, and New York.
"There are several places that we're considering," said Stern. "We are aiming to have a decision shortly after the season starts."
Dallas seems to be the front-runner for 2010. There has been a proposal to have the game at the new Cowboys stadium in nearby Arlington, which would allow all the Mavericks season ticket-holders to be able to attend."

Wouldn't it be great if the core players make the all star East team with Larry Brown has the head coach ala the Pistons a few years ago? I would have to make my way out to Charlotte for that Weekend though.
That would be awesome but it's hard to believe we'll get it with the proposal the Mavs have brought forth.

the new cowboys stadium is opening in the fall of 2009 so it would be well done by february of 2010.
the only problem is that char is a dud compared to the other cities. it is cold as ass in feb and there is nothing else to do. plus, there is no rabid fan base. toronto is cold but there are casino's and a rabid fan base and gang bangers wouldn't travel to the great white north, dallas has a good basketball city plus stuff to do and new york is new york. i don't see it happening.
It happened in 1991.
Think about what Charlotte had to offer in 1991. Nothing. The old coloseum was in the worst place possible as far as being close to anything else. I think there was a Jock's and Jill's sports bar across the street. That's it. There was NO downtown (or Uptown) nightlife. No clubs, no restaurants, no anything. Comparing the city of Charlotte today with Charlotte of 1991 is not even close. The location of the new arena is awesome and puts everyone uptown. There are plenty of hotels within walking distance. I know Charlotte is no New York or Dallas but Charlotte has plenty to offer and is very much still a up and coming city. Time Magazine's October 6th edition just wrote a very flattering article about Charlotte being one of the Jewels of the New South.
I just grabbed the article...here's how it starts...
"In 1791, George Washington called Charlotte a "triffling place." In 1941 an author scoffed that the city had as much use for high-rises "as a hog has for a morning coat." By 1991, Charlotte was still a minor league city without major league sports, a cutural wateland with a central business district that died every weekday after work."
It then goes on to write glowing reviews about Charlotte's bustling uptown with 9 fortune 500 companies, being the nations #2 financial center, having the nations fastest growing airport, having the Bobcats and Panthers right at the city center, a really successful light rail system, museums, restaurants and the on the way Nascar hall of fame and an African-American cutural center. If you like Charlotte, it is a great article saying what we who know the city already could have told you...it is going nowhere but up!
With all this being said, we have already hosted all star weekend in 1991 when Charlotte was a sleepy town. We have to have a better chance now...

I'd love to have the game in Charlotte and we have a lot more to offer than we did in '91. My big concern is the same concern the ACC has and that is the size of the arena. Just shy of 20k capacity isn't going to excite the NBA. MJ needs to be put in charge of the lobbying effort. He needs to something with his time and this would be huge.
