Bonnell - Observations (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/story/362538.html)

Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins has contacted McDyess' agent, as have at least a dozen other NBA teams. General speculation has McDyess returning to the Pistons eventually this season, after negotiating a buyout from the Denver Nuggets.

Brown has heard McDyess would like to talk to him about the situation, so there's still time for the Bobcats coach to make his sales pitch.

The team offering the most money to McDyess is the Cavaliers, according to one league source. They could offer McDyess multiple years starting at more than $5 million this season.I'm not sure if CLE has used any of their MLE this year or not (roughly 5.9 million), but right now they're sitting at a salary of 91 million bucks. I think LB should call McDyess and BEG him to come for the full MLE for at least 2 years.

IMO it's either that or put our hopes on Jordan actually doing a fair deal (and I have very little hope of that).

I'd really like Antonio to play for us, but I think more than money it's a championship that he wants. I don't think he'll find that in Cleveland, but I bet he feels it a better chance than in Charlotte. I think he will end up back in Detroit like everyone thought he would do (and he said he wanted to do) back when he was first traded.

That said, from what I've read about LB and McDyess, I think that LB could convince him to play here. He'd get tons of burn and would be a significant piece of our team. We could then explore trying to move Nazr somewhere (since he's been ineffective lately and Hollins has shown more of the energy that Brown wants), if we could find anyone to take him.

Notice in the Bonnell article, LB says that McDyess is sensitive (I don't think he meant that as a slight) and that LB didn't want to be another guy telling McDyess what to do. Maybe this is LB's way of sending the message to Antonio that he would be well respected here and could find a nice place in the line-up as a veteran leader on a team that looks like they seriously need that right now. You've gotta respect LB wanting to not put too much pressure on McDyess. They both know that we're not gonna win the o'brien trophy this year. Antonio's probably got tons of folks in his ear telling him to go somewhere for the money, go somewhere else for the ring. Perhaps Brown's "softer" approach at influencing McDyess will give us a chance, but I just don't know if I see him coming here, as much as I would like it.

agree with mutley...at his age he's looking to be on a playoff contending team (cleveland or detroit). we're nowhere close to that and even if he came here, we shouldn't expect to suddenly become playoff contenders

If that's going to be the way it is with our team, never being able to land a good player because they all want to be in the playoffs, what will our chances ever be of ever landing a good player?

our chances of landing a good player are through a big transaction involving money/future picks or getting lucky in the draft

we've obviously haven't done well at either.. the trades brought nazr and the picks have brought may/okafor

What did Shin do differently than BJ and MJ are doing here? If I remember correctly the Hornets got LJ with a #1 pick and then got AM with a #2 pick the next year of which we the Bobcats have never gotten in the lottery.. Maybe Shin knew how to carress the NBA elite better than BJ and MJ and thats why the Hornets got those 2 picks and the Bobcats havent as of yet...

problem is first we drafted may over a danny granger or david lee

then in 06 they went morrison over brandon roy or rudy gay. Anyone could tell Rudy gay was going to be a better nba player even without injuries

I hate the woulda/coulda/shoulda game. However, many critics said the following at those respective drafts:

Danny Granger had a questionable injury (knee?) that many people were speculating to be long term. That's why he dropped about 10 picks and not just our pick.

David Lee? I don't think anyone thought he'd be as solid as he is. Who knew? For that matter, we could have drafted Renaldo Balkman a couple of years ago. He shook us for 20 the other night, didn't he?

Many questioned Rudy's ability to be a true difference maker and to play with spirit. Some thought he was going to be a guy who never lived up to his athletic ability and skill set. That remains to be seen, but he looks nice now.

The draft business can hurt when you think about what could have been. Unless your Sam Bowie era Portland, I don't think it's worth the energy.

^ tough break. I guess we're all experts and handy scouts to have for 'morning' after the draft night.

Mcdyess can surely contribute defensively, but no more than others on the team can already. Throwing money at him just so people would have antoher player-acquisition to bash in a year's time is not something... #$)/ (got lost in thought).

I've liked McDyess since I saw him playing for Alabama in the '95 NCAAs....he was a machine, and it really continued for him until his knee injury. I think he would be a great fit and give us a hard-nosed, no-nonsense 4 which we need desperately. I think it would be a coup for us to get him. Smitty and DA are the only two quality players we've ever gotten to come here of their own free will, and I think adding McDyess could do wonders for the team. Whether he'll come here or not, probably not; but at least the guys continue to try to get some help for the team.

Maybe we could agree to trade him to Detroit if we're out of the playoff picture come trading deadline......they take back Nazr, we get back Walter to boot!!

McDyess left more money than we can offer now only to be playing for a contender. He even didn't like Denver. I believe Dice would be the dumbest person I've ever seen if he signs with us. But I also think he's locked to Pistons.

I'm really wondering how all these waiving-signing crap will end.

i'd love it if he signed with us, but he's already turned down an offer from Boston and turned down Denver. If he signs with us, he'd be like the John who picks the buck-toothed, 3-cent hooker
