It is well talked about that Joe Smith is looking to get out of OKC and that he likely goes soon. Would you be interested in him coming to Charlotte? He's 6-10 and 225 PF with 13 years experience. Could be a good stand in this yr while we let him tutor Ajinca. Best thing is his salary is $4,795,000 and is a one yr. Could be something to trade Carroll and get rid of that 5 yr contract for a 1 yr deal for a short term PF. Interested?
Do you think the Thunder need a jump shooter like Matt?

Certainly...but what would be their incentive for taking on Hammer? They're going to want a draft pick at least and probably an expiring.

joe smith would be a decent stop gap guy...if nothing else he is better than d.jones and mcmay

I was just looking at salary. Is there someone else on our roster salary wise which you think they would take? Main thing seems to be he wants out of OKC and they are ready to oblige.
I just looked over their roster/salaries and I'm not sure they would even care about short term contracts...they have a lot of cap space opening next year and might make the deal if they feel Hammer is the best value they can get for Smith...and short term (rest of this year0 he'd probably be fine...

I just think that it is clear that Carroll does not fit into LB's plans very much. To get rid of that 5 year Contract would be helpful to us over the next yr or so.
If Matt indeed is not going to fill a role for LB (and I'm not taking issue one way or the other) and it does not "appear" that he is then this would be a good trade...fills a short term need (stop gap) and gives us 5 million off the books next year...I wouldn't be opposed but I'm also not really that up on Smith as a player...I looked at his stats and they are of the stop gap at the PF position but so what if it is really to free up space...but players demanding trades from other teams always gives me pause...:g:

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have obtained Kurt Thomas (http://www.nba.com/playerfile/kurt_thomas/index.html) from the Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for Francisco Elson, Brent Barry and the team’s 2009 first round draft pick. This is pretty much the same thing and they got 2 expirings and a (late) 1st round pick.
I'm thinking they'd want Ammo since we don't have a pick to send...and I'm not willing to do that.
BTW, I'd DEFINITELY do Hammer for Smith from our perspective. What I'm expecting tho is we'll trade him to Philly for Evans (which is what I think they offered this summer).

That may indeed be what they want spectre but there are times when a team can say this is what you'll get period...and again if it is the best value they will probably take it...unless of course they want McCant from the T'Wolves:biggrin:

Joe Smith on the roster wouldn't be a bad thing, but trading anything of value for him would be.

Did Joe come out publicly saying he wanted to be traded? What happened in the Thomas situation is typical; they'll hold onto a useful vet until near the trade deadline and a playoff team will jump forward to add what they see as a piece that could help them go just a little farther. These teams almost always are willing to move their pick...and a late first is better than none at all.
Post it on the RGM trade board ohara. Ya never know who might be watching and I could be wrong.

I've seen it a few places on ESPN.com. On the Stein chat yesterday, in an article on who you expect to be traded and who not. He was a "yes". I'm just taking it from that info that he is wanting out. Think I saw in in an artcle on Yahoo sports also.
Yes he did... (Marc Stein from his chat guaranteed him he'd be traded)...as to how much "stink" is involved I don't know...I do know (again) that it gives me pause when a guy demands a trade...how much of a distraction does he become (if we indeed trade for him) and he does not like the minutes he gets from LB?:g:

And I think the Spurs may have wanted the trade they made so they had to overpay. In this case, I'm just thinking maybe OKC is in the position of wanting to get rid of Smith and we may have the upperhand. If they want more than we will give, then so be it. Trade just isnt worth giving up Ammo. But Carroll and a 2nd rounder, I dont have too much of an issue with that. Just a big body who can also help show Ajinca how it's done. If Ajinca is as good as LB thinks, then maybe we only want a 1 yr player like Smith.
I think we're in a good enough position on this one to just give them Matt and keep our seconds...I don't think other teams will beat down the door on this one...and if somebody else wants to overpay let them...

That Spurs-Sonics trade was also old. That was back when they were still the Seattle Supersonics. I think Spurs did that trade when they were trying to bolster themselves for the Playoffs last year. That's why they overpaid. They needed a big banger for defensive and rebounding purposes.
I doubt any team will overpay at this point in the season which works to our advantage...and the Thunder (I would think) would rather send him East rather than keeping him West...so unless a team (like Boston, Cleveland, or Toronto) see him as a piece they've gotta have (which I doubt) the Hammer might be the best value they can get for him...
ohara...you post on RealGM correct? Have you thought of posting Matt for Smith on the OKC forum to see what they'd think of this trade (I post no where else so I can't...just read there)?

It happened right before last year's trade deadline and with the same owner they have now. I put it out there because it's a direct example of how OKC has handled a similar situation.
Unless he's being a dick (which from what I know he isn't) then why wouldn't OKC wait the couple of months and do what they did with Thomas?
IMO everyone's thinking he's likely to be traded is also due to what OKC did last year. He's an asset (which is probably why they wanted him in the first place).
i would want to try and get one of their draft picks, too. what about nazr and ammo or matt and ammo if they want it for joe smith and a high draft pick and others if needed to make it work?

The Thunder fans were discussing this very trade (Carroll for Smith) and were turned off by Carroll's D and contract.

A rebuilding team wouldn't even consider taking Matt Carroll's contract.
When they do, the situation generally ends like this:
July 20, 2007 SEATTLE - The Seattle SuperSonics announced today they have acquired Kurt Thomas from the Phoenix Suns, along with the Suns’ 2008 and 2010 first-round draft picks. To execute the transaction, the Sonics utilized the trade exception that was created in the Rashard Lewis sign-and-trade deal with the Orlando Magic. As part of the deal, Phoenix receives the future conditional second-round pick acquired by the Sonics from the Magic.
