View Full Version : Felton is not a SG

Ok, At first i liked the idea of DJ and Felton in the back court. I thought they would push the ball on the break like UNC, maybe get some easy baskets. Thats not happening. I've noticed they run the pick in roll alot which should also work but Felton either coming off a pick or poppin off a pick likes to pull up for the jumper. Instead since he's suppose to be a PG looking for the big that picked him or getting to the basket. Felton has his moments but you have to admit him listed at SG means nothing during the game but who u guard on defense.
Honestly it would be a better idea to put DJ at SG and let him score but DJ has a better Assist / Turnover %. The Cats aren't going to renew Feltons contract as a SG, So how does Felton fit in? It's not like he's playin any better this year. He's not the leader he said he would be during the summer. He still makes bad choices and can't shot. So what do we do with Felton?

If he's not moved, it will likely depend on what the market is for him. As a restricted free agent the team will have the option to match any offer, but if he's offered a chance to start and starter money, he'll probably be gone.
If the FO believes he will be offered a starting position somewhere else they may be wise to move him before the deadline to get something in return. As a fan, I hope this doesn't happen, but if it's a business decision it would be hard to argue with their choice.

I don't see why it matters what his position is, per se.
Just because he's listed as a SG doesn't necessarily make him a SG. When he's in there our lineup is PG PG SF PF C.
I hate how people say he shouldn't be a shooting guard. Well, he's not... he's just ANOTHER point guard. He's a solid defender and someone who can bail DJ out when he gets in trouble with the ball. I remember DJ saying he felt more comfortable knowing Ray was out there to back him up if he got stuck.
A person's position means nothing. The game is played by match ups since the NBA is predominantly a man-to-man league. Felton could be listed as our starting Center and Mek as our PG, but that wouldn't mean they'd be playing those spots

The only problem with that, is that as the offense is run it creates open shots for the second guard (regardless the title) and Ray's shot is not consistent enough to depend on.

It is OFF of the pick and roll, LB's system. Don't get me wrong, Felton isn't the greatest shooter ever, but I think we kind of exaggerate his "inability" to shoot. Augustin has a solid shot so he can take the shot once Felts comes off the pick. Just because Augustin is listed at the PG slot doesn't mean he has to be the primary ball handler

Ideally I think LB would put DJ at the SG position because he is a better shooter but he will not make the same mistakes Bernie and Sam did. He drafted DJ to be a PG and nothing else. He will not over-complicate things and mess with DJ's head giving him extended time at SG. You can not learn the PG spot from the wing, you need the ball in your hands, its that simple.

Felton just can't shoot when it matters :p .
I agree that its more 2 PG's than SG / PG. With 2 of then we beat traps and presses easily.
That plus playing Felton and Augustin together is simply a way to keep our best players on the court for max. minutes. Felton may not be the best shooter, but he creates very well. DJ is looking pretty good all around.

i cant help but think that with felton playing SG his production has fallen. i no that DJ should start and that ray has to go, but he is a good player who is playing (for now, anyway) out of position

i wouldn't say so..it's hit or miss, i've seen make the shots when needed for us to win game...i've also seen him miss them..i'm a bit dissapointed with his inconsistency and he's not our go to scorer, but he gets the ball at the end of the game, i'm guessing it's the plays that LB is calling

IMO it's a little of both. If he is playing the SG position he will usually get the ball on particular spots on the floor that are taylor made for a SG (which he is not). Sometimes he makes them sometimes he doesn't but the key is historically your SG should be a reliable shooter. Same case with Crash, how many times during the course of a game DJ or Ray makes a great drive into lane only to kick out to a wide open Crash who is not comfortable taking the deep 3 or the jump shot in general.
LB has to call the plays but it would help if the right players were in those positions to excel.

From ESPN.com....
It's believed that teams interested in trying to pry Raymond Felton away from the Bobcats instead of Wallace -- Portland has been mentioned -- have to be willing to take back mothballed center Nazr Mohammed (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=568) (owed a combined $13.4 million in 2009-2010 and 2010-11) thanks to Felton's improvement since being moved to shooting guard alongside rookie point guard D.J. Augustin (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3415). One source close to the situation said that new Bobcats coach Larry Brown had already been grinding on vets such as Richardson and Wallace, which has apparently fed into Brown's famed penchant for wanting to make changes.

The ESPN artical shows Feltons value . Ever other thread is about how much Felton sucks. Granted hes not a allstar but hes much better than given cradit for. Why all the hate ? Espn is as much as saying he has as much if not more value than Crash . The guy hustles his ass off , works as hard as any on the team , and does what hes told . He could be a ass to Augustin and even make him look bad on the court. But he chooses to be a stand up guy and do the right thing and all i ever see is thread after thread talking crap about him. He's a darn nice ball player if you ask me . Is he better than Augustin this year yes next year i doubt . But all the hate i can't understand. But i think his value is more than any of you guys are giving him. And yes with that kind of value he would be a good trade piece. I just starting to belive Brown don't want to give Felton up. He sees Feltons work ethic like a lot of other GMs do . Unlike some at Bobcatsplanet.

I don't think anyone's hatin on Felton. As fans we want every player ( even Shonnon Brown ) to play well cuz that means the team plays well. But as fans we can see when something isn't working. Felton is not a good shooter, never has been. Sticking him at the SG spot were he's going to be forced to shot more is a bad idea. His shooting % the last few games are proof. Actually all season this two guard idea has just barely worked.
Felton means another good ball handler and passer, but he's like Okafor kinda a one trick pony. Okafor is good on the boards and defense but a poor on the other end. Last couple games are the exception. Felton is a good PG if thats all he had to be. But it looks like DJ will be a better one. So Felton stays for the rest of the season but then what?

Exactly. We need to trade him so we get something of value instead of losing him for nothing. If we can create capspace by pushing Nazr in the deal that would be awesome. There are many qualities Felton has but the writing is already on the wall that he isn't coming back. I'm sure he knows it too.

Here we go being hypocrites again. When Felton and Augustin were playing together and dominating for that little stretch, everyone said "YES! THIS IS GREAT WE HAVE TWO POINT GUARDS!!!!! YAYYYYYYY" Now that they aren't doing the same, we're back to hating Felton again.
Give it a break guys, the whole team had played a lot without Richardson and Wallace lately so more of the offense was depending on Felton. When we assimilate these new players, we'll see Felton start to do better again. Give him some time
