View Full Version : So is SG the new PF for us?

Through all of these trade debates since the summer, the thought has been whatever trade we make, it would be for a PF. Now that we have Diaw, would the next trade be for a scoring threat at the 2? I now Bell was brought in, but he seems like a bench guy so far. I like the raymond-dj backcourt, but as our starting lineup with crash-diaw-mek, we would be the posterboy for small ball. i know we all use those trade checkers and have us getting a big coming back in the trade, but i'm thinking we start looking at some go-to scorer as a shooting guard. i think sometime in january or so, we will see ajinca get a lot more time too. another reason why getting a big man would only bury frenchy deeper on the bench. the acquisition of diaw also makes the draft a little blurrier for us as we probably go best player. whereas before we weren't even looking at sg's, now i guess it's wide open.

Remember how Swish struggled the first couple of weeks under Larry Brown?
But yes...let's certainly judge the guy after 2 games. If I remember right even under the Idiot who had no clue about when to take shots Swish didn't look so hot at first either.
Raja has come from a team that believed in jacking up a shot before 10 seconds had run off the shot clock to a system where you don't take early shots.
I didn't see the last game but from reading the posts of some that did it appears Raja was hesitating before he'd shoot, indicating that he is trying to please LB and get with the system. He brings defense and he brings an outside shot...and so long as Felton is starting we NEED someone to be a 3 point threat.

I agree with Spectre. Lets give Bell a few more games to get the LB system under his belt. If he starts to get it and play like Diaw did against Atlanta and Diaw continues to flourish, then I would think we made a very good trade. Time will tell.

Agreeded and if that don't work out two words Stephen Curry
This organization is licking thair chops him. Stephen will put buts in the seats in this area . He has a hudge following around hear.
We need to give it 15-20 games after any trade (if it involves a starter) because they have to play together that long just to get a comfort level...

drafting curry as a first round pick would be an enormous gamble...whos to say he wont be another ammo/JJ in the nba?
polarcat - i was thinking the same thing yesterday after getting burnt by Joe Johnson...we don't have a scorer at the SG, even Raja at his best won't come close to the points Jrich scored.
I think the bigger problem is our lack of a go to scorer...whether its a guard or someone in the paint...when we need the points to maintain a lead, we should have one go to scorer and a second option..both providing us a high % shot

In our 5 years we haven't found anyone close yet.
With DJ as starting PG I think defense outweighs offense. You have to have balance. You also need 3 pt threats, and based on Raja's numbers you're not going to find too many better.

i don't know too much about bell, but i figured with his age and what little i've seen of him, that he isn't an offensive threat.... here or in phx. the intent of this topic wasn't to knock bell, rather the shift in thinking of which position is more of a need to upgrade via trade or the draft. obviously 2 games doesn't mean jack as far as bell, or diaw for that matter.

i agree..i think the pistons under LB, as much of a defensive team they were, they still had a 3 pt threat with rip hamilton and prince
but..maybe LB isn't too concerned about scoring
pistons won the championship scoring 90pts on average and taking little less than 12 3-pointers per game...but they were also 2nd overall defense, and averaging almost 43 rbds per game (does that even sound possible?)
http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/DET/2004.html
maybe LB is trying to emulate the pistons lineup..this is the type of players that brought him success

^ He's not a stud, but he has shot over 40% from 3 for the past 5 season counting this one (and not counting our 2 games).
It'd be nice to upgrade him tho, or at least get more quality depth at the 2. I'd still like to give it more time til we pass judgement on whether he can be the starter.

this may also be the reason why carroll has been playing more than usual...LB may be counting on this 3pt shooting to draw defenders away from inside

I didn't read every post, so my apologies if this is repeated.
SG is not going to be our new PF. The huge difference is that PFs help stop easy baskets, get easy baskets, and get rebounds for possessions. You have to have a pretty highly skilled guy or extremely athletic guy to do that.
For SGs, all you need is a defensive minded SG who has some range. The guy doesn't have to be a lock down defender, although that would be nice. For my SG, I just want somebody who's going to be in constant motion and has a little bit of range.
At any rate, a mediocre SG isn't going to affect you nearly as much as a mediocre PF. The Spurs were successful before Manu with Brent Barry. Detroit won when Hamilton barely new what defense was. The Hornets were one of the best teams in the league last year with Morris Peterson. You can be a little weaker at SG and still be very successful. The same can not be true of PF. You need a guy who's going to give you tons of work underneath.

dnbman - your argument makes plenty sense, as long as the PF is getting rebounds. and that to me, is the biggest concern
i don't think diaw has ever been known as a great rebounder, for his best season he had 7 rebounds per game
i said this yesterday, but part of the reason may be because of the type of game he plays, he is pretty mobile and you can even find him at the top of the key on offense. it doesnt seem that he was trying to box out much either yesterday
* as i finished typing this, i looked up rasheed rebounds per game during Brown's tenure..he is in the 6-7 figure per game..with ben wallace carrying the load of the weight on rebounds. perhaps larry is thinking that GW/Ok will pull the weight on rebounds

If Diaw goes back to 6-7 (and I think he will), then we'll be in o.k. shape, as he should be contributing in a lot of other ways. Guys like Okur only average about 7 rebounds a game and are still very effective. He also has some post moves, which was one of our biggest problems.
He's not the prototype of what we wanted, but I'm glad we got him.

Dnb, agreed...it's a matter of practice and getting accostumed to Diaw..like i said above, that means GW/Oka or whoever else is in game tries to get rebounds

Not to mention my preferred way to handle the offensive rebound problem: make your shots!

Very true...it may cut down offensive rebound totals but helps the point total...which is much more important at this point in time...

With regard to Curry, I watch him and see him constantly in motion and getting his shot off quickly. I was thinking he's be fine in the NBA with such a quick release and his range. But I have seen several ex NBA guards discussing him and saying he will have a very difficult time getting off his shot in the NBA due to the bigger guards and their size and defense. They make it sound very risky to take him in the lottery. He'd be a solid bench guy playing against a 2nd string Defense where someone could not blanket him. I think I'd shy away after hearing their opinions. And I trust them b/c Dell was their collegue and I would think if they were going to be biased it would likely be in favor of Dell's son. But it sounds like they think he'll be a solid bench guy in a shooting capacity, but certainly not a star.

If we drafted Curry it would probably be the first time in history a Father & Son play'd for the same city different team tem yrs or so apart. Honestly I'm love to have Curry. It's been mentioned he might be a Morrison or JJ Redick, Throw Matt Carroll in there too. Eddie House is a perfect example of players coming off the bench with a green light. But who knows how the draft might work next year.

He plays a game like Rip Hamilton, but with more range and a better shot. They're both thin guys too. I'd love to have Curry, he's had to overcome a lot of naysaying and has become one of the special guys in college basketball. I wish we had him coming off the bench to be our Eddie House but better. But unless he can put on some weight and become a lock down defender, we should stay away....:(

Just give Raja Bell another week or 2 to get used to LB's system and we should be fine at the SG position. We have Matt Carroll and Shannon Brown coming off the bench for help, and Felton playing at the position too, so we should be fine in the near future
