Posted Dec 30 2008 7:02PMCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Sean May feels he's in good enough shape to play. Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown thinks otherwise.

So there was May at the end of the bench in street clothes again Tuesday, on the inactive list for the ninth straight game as his frustration mounts in what's been another disappointing season for the oft-injured former first-round pick.

"It is stressful," May said before the game. "I want to prove to this organization that I can help this team for the future. You can't do that in a suit. It's been tough because the prior three years I've been in suits. Now that I'm able to play, coach just doesn't feel like I can give him much right now. It stinks all in itself."

May, the 13th pick in the 2005 draft, played in only 58 games in his first three seasons because of his troublesome right knee. He missed all of last season after undergoing microfracture surgery, but began this season as the Bobcats' starting power forward.

But May lost his job after just one game because Brown said he wasn't fit. He was inactive for the next five games, and has seen limited time since. He's played in 16 of Charlotte's 32 games and is averaging only 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Speaking after a shootaround before Tuesday's game against New York, Brown hinted May won't see the court anytime soon.
"He's making progress, but I'm not going to play him," Brown said. "I told him last week that until I see he's able to run up and down the court and be fit enough to play without having him struggle. I haven't seen that."
May disagrees. He feels he's in much better shape and capable of playing 6-7 minute stretches before being taken out. May did have one solid game earlier this month, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in 27 minutes in a win over Oklahoma City.

"I felt like right before I was deactivated I started to do things I hadn't been doing prior," May said. "I was driving the ball. I was able to go after balls that I didn't have the confidence to before. It's just a trust thing with my knee. Then I get deactivated and now I have to start back at square one."

May is not the only former first-round pick to see little playing time under Brown, in his first season in Charlotte. Adam Morrison, the No. 3 pick in the 2006 draft, hadn't played in four of the past six games before Tuesday.
But May's situation is more tenuous. He's in the final year of his rookie contract and would appear to have little trade value. He said he's struggled some with tendinitis in his knee, but said overall pain is not the issue.
"That's what they see sometimes, that I favor it," May said of the knee. "But it's going to be like that for a while until I'm able to get it back stronger and gain some confidence. But the knee feels good. I feel like I can contribute. But it's not up to me."

Brown said he planned to revisit May's status soon.
"We talked last week and he just said he wants to see me move better," May said. "He wants to see me play better and he's not going to put me out there in a bad situation. He just said in the near future. That was a week ago.

"I'm just trying not to get discouraged. It's tough, but I've been through worse."

If the Bobcats ever waive Sean May, we should refer to it as "Operation Dumbo Drop"

Now now...lets be nice... He is worth something...Something for the fact that on 2/18 someone is going to want to get rid of something for him to get some cap space for the following summer. If not, then we're best to keep him and see if someone wants to trade him for a 2nd round draft pick in the summer.

Honestly I think ammo is going to be a hot item next year's deadline (if we haven't found someone for him yet) because he'll be expiring just in time for the Summer of LeBron.

the bench is so weak for the bobcats and we have high draft picks that are complete wastes of space ammo is mentally weak....and may is paid to play basketball and cant say in shape...other teams have to know that..why would they trade anything for them

"capable of playing 6-7 minute stretches before being taken out"

Seriosuly? A year of rehab, and now 2 months of the coach telling him that he is to fat and out of shape to play and thats the best he can put forward? 6 - 7 minutes....

I think we should give him the chance to play. Before I thought he was apathetic about the team and didn't put out any effort. Now he's saying that he really wants to go out there. It really wouldn't hurt to try him for a 5 minute stretch every game. Why not use our 1st round draft pick?

Now that is classic! He should see another team's food court for the rest of the year just before the deadline, then he should see how he likes euroleague as he couldn't afford to eat on D-League salary.

I hate to be ugly about it, but May has just let everyone down with his failure to keep himself in shape as an athlete. If he would have been in shape, I think this injury would not have been nearly as devastating to his career - which I see as wrapping up real soon. He will not be with this team once his Contract expires, and that will be addition by subtraction. I cannot see him playing elsewhere in the NBA as I dont see him passing anyone's physical.

Sean May doesn't deserve to see the court. He needs to find a new profession, Sumo wrestling maybe? A Sumo Sean photoshop would be GREAT!

Everyone here pretty much feels the same way about Sean May. I'm betting the front office pulls a Ryann Hollins and brings him back next year. He hopefully wont get the 5 mil he gets now, But he better be happy getting coupons to the Whaffle House at this point. He has been on this team 4 years. My lil 15 yr old cousin has play'd more recreation league games then May has NBA games in his career. Thats shameful. To say your knee fills fine and the only reason you can't play is becuase your out of shape is shameful. Not having a NBA career just like your Daddy, Shameful. 6 or 7 minutes a game? Shameful

Sean May.....:rim: Nice Joke on the team
When does the real one show up?

What pisses me off is his coach is telling him that he isn't ready to play and then in articles he is turning it into a sob story. He says it is disappointing to work so hard, but he can't showcase his talent because Brown won't play him. Why doesn't he try showcasing it in practice. Maybe that would earn him some play time. Its not like he is going to raise his level of play dramatically upon entering game situations. He needs to shut his mouth and keeping working until his number is called. I am disappointed in him.

If he is serious (and I question it) about BB it might benefit him to actually get in shape and play a year overseas...I think his work ethic will always be questioned until he actually gets in shape, stays in shape, and plays a year injury free...

He's so big, I'm sure the 3rd roll on his right side is already overseas

There is no earthly reason to bring Sean May back to this team next year. I don't care if it does recover he has wasted to much time and money from this team already. Morrison with his weak knee was resigned and will be back next year, Thats 5mill more. Darko has been more productive then Sean May.

Sean, take your NBA welfare money, Go home or somewhere else and open up your own Whaffle House or a strip club anything but playing basketball

I still have a difficult time understanding how you can go through a month of training camp and a couple of hours of practice every day and not lose weight :g:

Does he have a gland problem? Is he eating 20,000 calories a day? Is he mainlining Wendy's Frosties for breakfast... How is it possible?

I keep thinking that too. You almost have to TRY to not lose weight in this situation. Any of us, even eating a typical American Fast food diet would still drop crazy weight with weight training, scrimmaging, cardio, stretching, etc. etc. I don't get it.

Any of us do "Sweatin to the Oldies" and lose weight, May does a full bball training with a professional trainer, and quite frankly i think they're probably training him to the limit where if we push harder his knee will fall off again. To not lose weight on the training he is doing he must eat 3-4 steaks at Ruth's Chris, about 10 of those dominoes pizza's they charge $$$ in the stadium, a keg maybe? oh thats just breakfast....

Sean's been too busy telling the ladies of Charlotte he can go for 6-7 minute stretches to lose weight.

All kidding aside, he may well be in shape to play, but the team has given up on him and he's given up on them (regardless of what he says). Watch him during a timeout and he appears completely disengaged from the team, but then when he did play he was constantly confused and asking coaches questions at every break. He's not doing the things to prepare to get on the court, and then tries to play catch-up once he's out there. It's a vicious cycle.

He was probably asking about the postgame spread

Sean needs to get real. I either saw something on tv or saw something on the radio and the dude was incredulous. He's like "I'm working hard, I've got my weight down" yeah right. I mean sure you can drop LBS but can you get wind going where you can play, jump, contribute? Ger serious kid. I mean someone has to tell him "Sean you've been handed everything now it's time to work son" He doesn't get it, you can tell from his attitiude. I am not an expert, I don't know Sean, all I know is what i see on tv at the arena and hear and read. He just doesn't act like a person who gives a shit.

Ya'll made good points about training camp ,cardio, and everything else. It does seem strange this many games into the season he's still not ready to play more then 10 mins....He's not even at 10 he's said 6 or 7.
How shameful is that?
Why does he even dress up and sit on the sideline?

So all the "ladies" can see him dress "fly" I really don't have the words to describe how useless that big mass of... uselessness? I say we all pitch in some money and send it to the 'Cats so they can buy him out of his contract so we don't have to be associated with him anymore

playoffs...PLAYOFFS?

my take is that they need him to get in shape if we are to hope to trade him..i think we should have plenty of motivation to get him in a decent shape
