View Full Version : My frustration with Matt Carroll
playoffs...PLAYOFFS?

Anyone else catch the end of the Spurs/Lakers game?
This is the second time I see the Spurs play this season..and just happens that in both games (the other game being against Phoenix on Christmas Day) Roger Mason stepped up and made the clutch shot to win them the game.
I looked up his stats..they are pretty ridiculous this season
12.3 PPG
45.6% FG
47.5% 3-PT
30 MPG
You get all this ..for $3.5MM (according to ESPN, no other info on his contract)
Granted...Mason is playing a lot more minutes than Carroll...and this is his first season posting big numbers. But there is a trend for him.
Meanwhile, Carroll, just seems to be getting worse
4.1 PPG
40.6% FG
26.7% 3-PT
14 MPG
And you get all this for $6MM..and would you trust the ball to Caroll for a clutch shot to win the game?
I just think this is ridiculous, both players are approx same height/weight. It really bothers me how much he gets paid for minimal contribution. Even in his best season, Carroll wasn't posting the numbers that Mason is posting right now. This is even bigger considering that Mason has been playing in the Western conference (tougher teams).
This guy needs to go, seriously. He is taking away salary space and not contributing in proportion to what he is getting paid. Maybe Bonnell needs to rip on him so that the guy finds some motivation to step it up

Whacks a couple of years and it gets LB the grunt he wants in the paint. Philly needs a shooter, inquired about Hammer this summer and isn't planning on dabbling in the '10 FA market.
It'd also open up time for S. Brown.

The thing I don't get is why matt played so much better last year and the year before... Those years he was pretty much on par with Mason.
In 06-07 he was 12.1, 2.9r, 1.3a and last year he was 9p, 2.8r, 0.9a. Where did Matt go? Did the baby take his will to play.

Yeah whats to like about a former D-Leaguer trying to make it big, providing good three point shooting and hustle when he's out on the court.
Is he overpaid: yes
Should we trade him: If we can use his salary with another player to get a even better player, yes
But is he valuble to the team: Undoubtably yes.
half of why mc is popular is his story, the other half is it gives the racists a reason to come to the game

i rather not include ticket sales as part of the discussion..but neither is working, i'm really curious is anyone else sees how this guy has contributed to the team so far

What will really make your stomach cringe is when you think back to last season when the Hawks were after him. We could have been rid of his contract if we made a trade with them last season.

He has failed to contribute this year, but last year and the previous year he was doing pretty well for the minutes he was played...Larry just sometimes ruins players, because he wants them to play his way, which of course is the right way...Matt did well for the biscuit because the "type of offense" if you can call it that, was pretty much run and gun and hope to get it in...matt camping in the corner in 3 point range, catch and shoot when McInnis, Felton or GW passed to him in desperation, and he did quite well. He was VERY dialed in on that corner 3 pointer, the way Ammo has been this season for a lot of quarter enders with seconds to go. Larry wants a 2 guard to do more than go camping in the corner waiting for the play to come to him and matt is not that player, so he's not a larry player and if/when we can ship him to a team that will use the 2 guard camping technique and wants to pay him what we wanted to pay him.
All the above said, Matt is probably one of the nicest guys on the team, and provides quite a moral backbone... Every time I've seen him interact with the kids its been unreal...Last year there was a group of kids at a game in Feb, he remembered their names from the Kids Club Christmas party, to me thats just crazy, considering he's getting paid millions and has his own life and stuff to worry about. Don't get me wrong, we actually have a pretty good bunch, no drug stuff floating around, no shooting themselves in the leg, no soliciting for gay love... but I mean Matt defines what I'd like to see in a player off the court.

I guess that's why ice-hockey is so popular among Afro-Americans. Come on, this is stupid argument however it could be partially true.

Matt is a spot up shooter if the team was getting him open shots his numbers would be a lot better. I am glad we can't trade him b/c he is slightly overpaid. If he went to a team like the Knicks where he was playing for dantoni he would light it up. Once our team gels a little more his numbers will improve.

i disagree, i've seen him take plenty of open shots in the last couple of games, particularly when he was starting., his shot is just not falling

Is it stupid? YES
Is it true? YES!!!
Every game I have gone to I have heard at least one old white guy (but usually more) ask who the white player is, and compliment him for making the team...and then they say they might come see him play
I hate it, it shows that the world isn't as civilized as it should be, but it is a fact of life and Carroll benefits from it.

Because an older generation says it doesnt mean the world isnt changing. Lets not distort anything. Carroll is over paid because of lack of performance not because of his race. What do you guys think when Ming comes to town and the Asian population comes to support him? I think these things are great! Some old geezer stuck in the 20s, let it be, its called ignorance.
well i guess when i say old, old to me
these guys are in their late 40s and 50s, and without their season tickets and vip sections, we couldnt have a team
sorry im just frustrated

Being a :airquote:white boy:airquote: I get plenty of looks from black people when I play basketball, be it for school or pickup. I Also get a lot of looks from white people whether it be good or bad.
Either way, basketball remains, to a certain degree, a polarizing sport. It sucks, and we're growing out of it, but we're getting there

Maybe Bonnell needs to rip on him so that the guy finds some motivation to step it upIn fairness to Matt, he was hitting his stride in the last half of Bernie Bickerstaffs last year coaching our Cats. He then had to endure a season under the experiment gone wrong named Sam Vincent. This season he never seemed to fit in Larry Browns system. The man is a shooter, he can drive a bit but over all he is a pure shooter. Matt rarely was given the ball with the intended purpose of him shooting. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to the team if Bernie would have stayed on at least another season or two as head coach. The team had great continuity and a transition from Bernie to LB may have been better than LB having to rebuild a broken team that SV tore apart. The mental aspects of the game may have come easier to the players. Bernie was not a technical coach but he inspired his players to play with passion. The way the players looked in the last half of Bernies last season makes me wonder how one more season under Bernie would have panned out.
Anyway, we have seen Matt play well and we know he has it in him. I am glad we traded him but I have a feeling we will see his best play in Dallas as a Maverick.

Matt rarely got the ball from teammates in shooting situations. Two years ago in the last half of Bernie Bickerstaffs tenure as coach we saw glimpses of how good MC could be. Dallas will surely reap the benefit of this trade. Dallas likes marksmen and they now have one.
