View Full Version : What to do with the open roster spot

Now that we have an open roster spot following the Hammer & Twiggy for Diop trade, what do you LB and Bobcats management will do with it?
Snag someone out of the D-League? If so, who are the likeliest candidates?
If not that, do we leave it open until another deal goes down?
What do you think?

My hope is there is another deal going down and we fill it with someone LB really wants and has a plan for using. That would be nice. Cannot see us filling it with a D-Leager or signing someone currently out of the league. That has too much potential to be just be a waste of $ and a roster spot. I trust LB to get someone he wants.

I want to use that spot to help facilitate another trade...maybe get a pick and/or move Nazr in the process. Another wing who could play both the 2 & the 3 with potential would be nice.
Use the damn advantage for once.

I think another trade is coming up where they are going to combo felton/nazr and we are going to get 2-3 players back

i'd rather combine nazr and felts for a quality sg over quantity that brings 3 players back. we're stacked down low so i'm hoping the combo of two of our players nets us 1 really good shooter/scorer. i don't know what happened with livingston in memphis/miami/wherever, but i wonder how bad that knee is. at 23 years old and his height, i wouldn't mind bringing him in to help with dj14 and singletary. if his injury is another may situation then i don't know who to pursue in the d or free agency.

I say we do a combination of things with it actually... Lets bring up the best 2 guard the D-league has to offer (don't ask I have no clue who that is, I know Coby Carl isn't too bad and has good NBA experience) on a 10 day contract...if they are good go for one more 10 day....THEN if we want that guy who now should have 10-12 games (didnt look at our next 20 days but we are starting to get heavy into the season where we play lots) and can decide if we do a 2 for 3 trade or f we do a 2 for 2 trade and keep our new D-League player... Money isn't the object, because a D-League player gets something like $40k on a 10 day contract (I think its min salary times the number of games they play actually) and we can drop them at a moment's notice if a trade we cant pass up comes along.

Coby Karl...George Karl's (LB's good UNC buddy) son.
Intriguing thought. Isn't he just like Hammer?

I was under the impression that he had good handles as well, I always thought he was a PG with the Lakers. he's 6-5, so he could handle playing SG (if I'm right about him being a PG).

He is alot like Hammer...just the fact that he's grown up with a coach since childhood and he's been a Laker (sorry, but I put value on what team a player has played for based on the quality of that team and coaches that has put them under).
We'd need to give him some real PT to make sure but he was averaging 4 min/game and 2 points per game. He is listed as a SG, but like Larry loves, he has good passing skills and can bring the ball end to end without losing it.

Here is a top 25 listing of NBA prospects from the NBADL. I'd say almost any of the SG or SG/PG or SG/SF players in the top 11 would give us some help. Some of the guys are more athletic, some of the guys are better defenders..I'll defer to Larry but Coby and Jeffers would be decent choices.

Well, if we are not going to trade for a quality SG, maybe taking a flyer on Coby Karl might be worth a shot.

Thats basically my point, I mean we could sign a D-Leaguer to a 10 day after tonights game and have him here in time to practice sunday and play monday (they don't need physicals from what i understand). It wouldnt cost much, and it really doesn't truely take up a full roster spot, because if we end up getting a 2 for 3 offer we can waive the DL player and only be out the balance of the 10 day contract $$.

^ Absolutely, and they should do it today.
Cost/investment is nothing.

Is there a time limit on when the spot has to be fillied? By the trade deadline?

how bout this trade
felton, may, nazr, morrison for hinrich, gordon, simmons
gets us a scoring 2 and a backup with starting experience at pg strait up swap of remaining years on contract with nazr and hinrich but hinrich's contract is much more costly which is why Chicago agrees to take back nazr only downside is gordon has to agree to the trade.

We don't have to use the roster spot at all, but the time just started a week or so ago where teams can sign players to 10 day contracts. I said "today" because the talent pool available won't be getting any better than it is right now.
Gordon would not consent to be traded (and he has to consent as he's playing on a qualifying offer)...he'd lose his Bird Rights. Hinrich is WAY overpaid too.

send a second rounder to Dallas for a relatively unknown player. Ryan Hollins seems like a good fit. good contract and tons of potential. I think we should give this guy a try.
playoffs...PLAYOFFS?

The way i see things is that we started off the season trying to go the "cheap" way and experimenting with all these players (linton johnson, andre brown, dwayne jones) hoping these guys would pan out to something. like finding a diamond in the rough.
i think LB eventually won the battle and now the FO is listening to what he wants. experienced players.
i don't see us bringing someone in from the D-League. don't we have enough young talent that keeps LB occupied teaching already?
either we're saving the spot for another trade (before the deadline) that would bring NBA experienced talent or will just keep it open for moves in the summer after the end of the season.
I'm inclined to think that this is the end of our trades....we're playing .500 ball after the first trade. if this trade is supposed to make us better, then we'll play above .500, meaning that there is no reason to do anything else this season

either resign hollins after he is cut by dallas or sign chris lofton as a back up shooter.

I trust LB to get someone he wants.I don't know Ohara, I kind of think that we should only fill the roster spot with ten day contracts. I don't think that is too big a risk and in my way of thinking it could turn out a bonus if the player we sign plays well. The D-League was created to give players a future shot at NBA glory and I don't think signing a D-League player to a ten day is much of a risk. We still have some time til the trade deadline so why not just use the ten day contracts now and see where we are by the deadline? I just know it is a matter of time before a star comes out of the D-League.
With all that said, aside from a trade there really isn't any options for the team to fill the empty spot. Unless we want to take players who have not performed that are free agents.
With the D-League there is plenty of players who have yet to see NBA playing time and should get that chance. I don't see a trade that brings us anything greater than Diop unless the team trades one of our core players. As the team is, it would be wrong to mess with the chemistry the team has begun to establish imo. ;)

Derrick Byars out of Vanderbilt would be good here. He's a 6'7'' SG/SF and is really solid all around. I'd love to give him a try

Yeah, I thought it through and unless we are pulling a deal for an etablished SG, I;d grab Coby Karl from the D-League with first option, but I like Byers also. I liked Byers in the draft before but he couldn't make the cut, so I am not sure he's got what it takes.

Anyone would be fine on a 10 day, because if they dont pan out they walk away...We should look at NBA experienced guys tho, which was my main idea behind Coby Carl....

I haven't seen much of the d leaguers but I have heard about Gary Forbes who has been beasting it up. I think a 10 day contract can't hurt unless we are close to a deal now. Giving the players a chance just might be the dime in the rough that they were looking for.
Last time we brought a guy up from the D he ended up costing us something like $24 million over 6 years and we couldn't wait to get rid of him!!
In saying that, I'd like to bring up Marcus (the Arizona one) Williams, Derek Byars or James "Flight" White up on a 10 day to see what they could do.

Is James White under contract with San Antonio?

Nope. He was waived last year.
Williams is the kid I would like to bring in the most. I liked him at Zona - plus he played a game or two in SL with us.

Very true. He reminded me a lot of Rip hamilton. Always running the court and never tired, and had some point skills when called upon.

I always felt he was like a poor mans (more like homeless mans) Grant Hill. Good handles, good rebounder, good mid range J, moved very smoothly.
