View Full Version : How Does A 10 Day Work?

Does it last for 10 days or 10 games?

Eg: If you have a heavy schedule over a 10 day period you might get 6 games to look at a kid, but if you have a light schedule because of travel you might get less games to look at him?

10-day contract contains 10 days, regardless of the number of games team plays. You should choose the right day to sign the player. After 2 consecutive 10-day deals, you have to either sign him for the remainder of the season or waive.

Darius Miles' situation was a typical example of 10-day players. Such as:

2009/01/10: Grizzlies sign Darius Miles to 10-day contract
http://www.nba.com/grizzlies/news/grizzlies_resign_miles_to_10day-090110.html

2009/01/20: Grizzlies sign Darius Miles to second 10-day contract
http://www.nba.com/grizzlies/news/grizzlies_sign_miles_to_second_10day-090120.html

2009/01/30: Grizzlies sign Darius Miles for the remainder of the season
http://www.nba.com/grizzlies/news/grizzlies_sign_miles_for_remainder_of_season-090130.html

During the first 10-day period, he played 3 games, during second, he played 5. Neither players nor teams have nothing to do with the schedule.

Hopefully, I've been clear enough.

Good nutshell, they also cost the team, on a per game basis, league minimum salary for the time they are there.. most D-leaguers with no NBA exp get something like 5 grand per game, whereas someone like Coby Karl would get more having had "real" NBA experience.

Thanks Tamburello. I figured that would be the case. I guess it's just up to the FO to sign them at the right time to best maximise the exposure the get to the kid.

Sure. But generally (unlike the Darius Miles case) teams sign 10-day contracts when they are desperate to fill the spots because of injuries or suspensions etc, so I don't think they give such importance to the schedule. They just try to save the day.

FWIW in Bonnell's blog he mentioned that LB said we would pick up another 10 day on the D Leaguer.

I would like to sign Martin for the rest of the season, he looks like he's doing pretty good. At least better than Ammo.

He had that one really nice feed into the post to Gana - but is he anything more than just a spot up shooter?

How's his D? How's his movement off the ball? How's his rebounding? How's his handle? How's his smarts?

I'd sign him, but I'd want to make sure he is more multi dimensional first.

100% agree, but what happens at the end of that 2nd 10 day? We either have to let him walk or sign him for the season. I say that he needs to show more to get that last roster spot, other wise give another 10 day to a different D leaguer.

Know what I mean?

Martin > AmMo, May, Nazr, Lexy and Shannon as far as impact right now

I agree but then we are back to square 1, having to break in another player and hope he will be able to help out. What I think about is the fact that Martin is putting up better #'s than the rest of the bench....

Trade May for a pick and get martin AND a D-leaguer :D

Cartier is getting his second 10 day...unless A. He screws up bad, or B. a trade requiring the extra roster spot presents itself, I'd say we've got a new bobcat. He tore it up tonight from 3, from 2 and from the line...He'll only get better as he still has plenty of room to grow into the NBA, just don't give him a 5 year 25 mil contract next year on the "warm fuzzies" :)

I gues now that DJ is back the trade rumor mill will fire up, so I expect that they will offer him another 10 day. If they dont trade anyone they will either try someone else or make him a offer for the rest of the season....

We have given Cartier a second ten day, that was on the broadcast tonight. ten day from today we have to decided to keep or let him walk, and I think it will be the former

Unless he totally flops in the 2nd 10 day I'd sign him for the rest of the year. If something better comes along we just waize him...only cost the team like 200k if that.

He's worth more than carroll no doubt, but if we were to keep him and he does well all season, the highest I would go is 5 for 3, that way we have options open to move him if the need arises. After the 3 if he is starting anytime we need him to and earning his spot for real then a longer term MLE type pay contract might be a good option. I just think we should learn from our mistakes and not sign D-league players to good money long term contracts until they've been doing it day in day out for a while.

Do you mean 5 million for 3 years?

If he's resigned and unless he just goes totally crazy he'll be getting a minimum deal.

We should make May switch contracts with Martin. Give Martin the better value and make May take the minimum

Yes but with May getting his own we kill two birds...not only does he get payed to play (which he will soon) but he can afford to run teh food economy...he couldnt on a minimum
