View Full Version : Cartier Martin for the rest of the season???

Heard the announcers talking about him during the game, and didn't hear the exact quote, but thought they said something about us signing Martin for the rest of the season after his 10-days are up....I for one like the idea...I don't see him scoring double digits or anything, but a nice 6-8 points off the bench is a nice thing to see...plus he picked up 3 or 4 rebounds tonight as well...

It wouldn't cost much, and i think would be a nice signing...plus we got an extra spot now that we did the 2 for 1 trade with the Lakers...I think he could be a more consistent and better Shannon Brown...energy wise...

They mentioned that you have to sign him for the rest of the season or waive him after a 2nd 10 day contract. I think he'll be signed for the rest of the season.

Absolutely. He actually tries to play within the offense instead of trying to prove he can score.

And he can score!

It's looking like a no brainer to me.

Agreed spectre. From day 1 he has shown himself to be comfortable on the floor while not trying to do too much. He's a solid player and we need to maintain depth at that position.

I not only hope we sign him now, but hopefully if we dont land a big FA and fill the roster in that way, maybe we could give him a low rent contract for like 2 year at 1.5 mil (bit more than minimum) with a team option for 3rd year, but im not sure what options you have when negotiating contracts and the like... but he is worth more than league minimum.

exactly, he seems very comfortable to me. aside from the fouls he doesn't seem to prone to mistakes in the offense, he seems confident i like him. it would be nice if he tried to drive the ball in more, so far he has only been hanging outside on the the 3pt line. but overall, it's a nice pickup off the bench and he is actually productive (unlike some of the other bench players we've had this season....may/carroll/ammo)

Yeah, seeing him play in the d-league he kept dunking and everything and we haven't seen that side of him yet here..I'm sure it will come out eventually though

can't hurt at all with 2 open roster spots. larry wants bench depth, i don't see why martin can't contribute a little bit. he seems like a low risk signing and has the potential to have a crazy 15-20 pt. output game every once in awhile. once gerald comes back, this team looks to be solid with some good depth coming off the bench to spell the starters.

I haven't seen the kid play yet (thanks to the wonderful contract management signed with TWC), but I would hesitate to sign anyone for the remainder of season before the deadline. That extra spot allows us a little more freedom to trade if one rolls across our desk. But judging by his numbers and our lack of depth at his position I wouldn't be against signing him for the remainder of the season. We should just hold off another week and a half. I don't think anyone would snatch him up.

BRNC
02-10-2009, 12:54 AM
Having some flexibility the last week of the trade dead-line can be very important...I think he's a good player and would hope he would not be grabbed by another team...the break will help get our injured better and I'd rather risk him signing with another team if it was the difference between him and a major trade...major being the key word! The thing is he just signed his second ten day so I think it will be up no more than a day or two before the dead-line...I think by that time the FO would/should know if they actually have something going down...I just hope if they make a trade and we need that spot they bring in someone that can at least contribute at the same level!

teej
02-10-2009, 01:08 AM
Well I think it would be more like 4 or 5 days before the deadline but the FO should know, yes, and hopefully we will have him...plus we can waive May to make a trade happen too guys.

Teej..I think McMay would be a part of any trade we'd make before the dead-line...it is salary we'd take back longer (as in the Lakers trade just made) from a team wanting to dump just like the Lakers...(Ray, Nazr, and McMay 12.6...drop McMay @ 2.6 any team we trade with lets that go at the end of the season...Nazr only has 2 years left after this so...) a team with 12.6 in contracts say 3-5 years that does not want them but they want Ray...could happen...but we'd have to take back a vet pg the other teams does not want like Watson but it would have to be someone LB feels comfy with...

My choice would be sit tight since I think Ray will be more valuable to us (if they indeed want to trade him) before the draft...but I still give it 90% with one of the four teams I posted earlier...

the best part about him is he looks like he loves what he's doin...after a play he has a tendency to start clapping...even after a foul...it seems like he is determined to learn an just wants to do everything he can do help the team....morrison on the other hand used to put his hands up in the air like he didnt no what was goin on...anyways im just glad we got a solid pick up in martin an cut ties with pube stache morrison

Well LB loves a love for the game second only to knowledge of the game, so that works well for Cartier, and "pube stache" is hilarious

We can sign cartier and still have a free roster spot, if we let cartier go, we'll have 13 active on the roster. We've made two 2-for-1 trades, Matt + Ryan = Diop and Ammo + Shannon = Vrad. So we have 13 active an a 10 day in the 14th slot. We could either trade, or pull another d-league player to their dreams...our option (or hold tight with 14 and roll in the tiny bit of cap that gives us)

Most of those calls last night was rookie or calls on a D leaguer. The kid loves to be in the game hustles his ass off and can knock down the open shot with in the offence. But his hustle really is noticed in person as to TV. I would love for us to keep the kid the rest of the season.

The All Star break doesn't count against a 10 day so we wouldn't have to sign him for the rest of the season until after the trade deadline - meaning if we needed to cut him loose to create an extra roster spot to facilitate a trade before the 19th, we could.

Equally, we have until after the 19th before we have to commit to him for the rest of the season.

True and why not sign him...seems a good kid and has better BB IQ than S. Brown...and good athletes with pretty good game IQ are not that easy to find...He's seems to have the best of Dudley and S. Brown in one player...I'd like to see him the rest of the year for sure...and thanks for reminding us the "break" does not count against 10 day contracts...

I really like Martin's energy. He does make some silly fouls sometimes but he is a rookie that getting used to NBA play and LB's style of play. Even though he was a big scorer in the D-league , he hasn't been a ball hog. He's worked well inside LB's offense. He's athletic and long and seems like he could guard big or fast SG's like Wade. I hope he works out for this team, I think he's a great pick up

"Cartier Martin has done a good job for us. He’s come in and given us good minutes and we still have a position open that we can add a player to. I’m waiting to see how coach gives us feedback on what he wants to do with Cartier Martin for the rest of the season. I would say as of right now, that’s our focus."

Coach Brown made a comment in one of the games that he was impressed with Martin and really liked him...I have a feeling with Brown and Jordan really liking him, a deal will get done and Martin will be a Bobcat till the end of the season...

I spoke with him before the game, added his name to the hat <grin>... He is insanely happy to be here (as is Diop, who I spoke with for a few min too). Cartier told me "I really hope they don't send me back to the cornbelt, I'm really enjoying the city and the NBA experience." Also something fun to note, Cartier has all kinds of motivational stuff inked onto his shoes... "You can do it" and "believe" on the toes (guess looking down before a free throw) and "Faith" "Grace" "Focus" and "Love" on the sides of the shoes to help remind him of his long journey to being an NBA player. He is refreshingly genuine in his love for the game of basketball.

Yes he has really put something nice on the floor... I'm worried about May's weight, Nazr's contract and Lil Sean's ability as a PG (I think he should be developed into a shooter, he's not very great on the ball). May and Nazr are easy fixes (trade) and Lil Sean is a rook so you cant expect too much too fast from a late second rounder. I'm just glad we don't have players with "star" attitudes who don't want to sign autographs and interact with fans before the games... GW was really enjoying himself tonight being around the fans in the backcourt club area after the game... He in no uncertain terms will be back against Orlando.

He gets upgraded by the season ticket rep for lower level with backcourt entrance. That game we got upgraded to the hardwood club with feet on the court. The season ticket reps see his tattoo and get all happy and upgrade him. We never would have thought the tattoo would get that much appreciation from the season ticket reps.

Actually my level of interaction has nothing to do with my seats... I get in the arena the moment that I can, sometimes as early as 4:30. I go down by the tunnel just like everyone else, but because i'm there way early I kinda almost "hang out" with some of the players who are in the mood to hang for a minute or two during the shootaround. Sean May has been very cordial, and while his play is lackluster, I've seen his pregame workout and I'll tell you he does more than any of the other guys, except maybe cartier. Doesnt make me desire to trade him less, but I know for a fact he's trying when I see him, just a matter how much he tries at dinner time ;)

He was really trying hard for it against the wizards, but they kept fouling him.

If he was signed on the 8th, he's ours until the 21st based on Fri,Sat,Sun of all-star not counting towards his time. The thing with Cartier that I'm most upset about is the fact that because he's doing well and on a 10 day up here in the NBA cost him playing in the D-League All-Star game (ha told you the bobcat's had at least 1 all star caliber player).

I foresee us signing him for the year, and if he does well for the year he'll have a shot at a resign, and an even better shot if we can't pick up anyone excellent on the free market (not talking about an AI or Boozer, just talking about 3-4 mil/year kind of player that would probably actually play only about as good as Cartier.

I think we sign him for the year, but I don't see why we'd offer him a multi-year deal unless it was very cheap and he proves to be a quality piece over time.

This isn't a knock on Cartier, but there are other athletic, talented guys waiting to play in the D-league, many of whom could probably contribute. A guy like Cartier is nice to have and is a good story. But, I don't see why would commit a roster spot and guaranteed money to him, not yet, anyway.

Are you sure about that. The prophet of CBA Larry Coon doesn't say anything something like that, or I missed.

65.What is a 10-day contract?

A 10-day contract is just that, a player contract which lasts ten days (or three games, whichever comes later). A team may sign a player to two 10-day contracts in one season (they may or may not be consecutive). After the second 10-day contract, the team can only retain the player by signing him for the remainder of the season. A team can't have more 10-day contracts than they have players on their Inactive List. Ten-day contracts are available to be used starting January 5 (or the first business day thereafter) each season.

1 mil for a rookie who is doing better than lots of 1st rounders?

You'd 99% of the time pay more than that for a veteran 6 point 2 rebound a game player.

This guy is a steal if all he does is continue playing at this level, but he's a rookie with tremendous upside, so he's only gonna get better =p

If he does 10, 5, and 1 for the rest of the season, then yeah, you consider him for a contract like you said. But there are any number of guys that could come in and score 10 points for a few games.

A guy like Tarence Kinsey scored almost 20 ppg for a month in Memphis. Now, he's averaging 1.3 ppg for Cleveland. He's making about $800K this year.

Before you commit multiple years to a guy, you need to see how he fits on the team. Is Cartier a guy who will be effective playing 15 minutes one night and 2 minutes the next night? Is he a guy who will know his role once he's surrounded by more talented players (namely, Raja and Wallace) on a nightly basis?

We (and I include myself in this, especially towards Jemario) tend to be fans of the diamond in the rough, often overvaluing him.

But, let's change the question just a bit. Suppose all of our guys are healthy on the wings, but another of our bigs go down? Martin may be collecting dust on the bench with a guaranteed roster spot when we really need to sign a short term big.

Again, I like Martin, but I think he's another case of Weaver and Jemario: a potentially great find that we overvalue as fans.

TattoodCats4life
02-14-2009, 11:12 PM
I agree we may over value him, but I've met him and he is a wonderful person and as I said, if he can AVERAGE 10/5/1 (or 12/3/1 as I'd trade a few boards for a few points) we should sign him... Never forget either that a low salary player who plays well is good too, because if we get into a spot where we need to make a move the lower salary players who are on 1-3 year contracts are the easiest to move. I cant think of many teams who wouldn't want to grab a 10/5 guy making less than 2 mil/year.

I do agree with you on J. Davidson, he should have played more last year for FHB, and I don't think he should have been waived for any of the junk we brought in early on in the season considering he was on a 100% contract and we had to pay his full 800k salary. He just didn't "get" larry's system, and that was no good at all for anyone.

Well, Cartier is (imho and most probably) worthy to be signed to the rest of he season. Then let him fight for it in offseason. summer league included. I think he will be victorius. If he succeed sign him for cheap longer contract. Unless we REALLY need a roster spot fr someone else (not May!) or he would develop some sort of locker room problems - at the time there are no signs that such a thing would happen as he looks to be a good teammate.

I think we'll keep him now, and likely bring him next season. I'm honestly doubting we'll give may the qualifying offer unless he does something amazing between now and the summer time. And even if we do, we could still trade him (I think, not sure how it works with someone on a qualifying offer). I just doubt we'll keep him past the deadline in 72 hours let alone this summer.

I would only offer May a qulifying offer if it would be in a sign and trade. No matter what he does in the rest of the season - fooll me twice it's my fault.

I fully agree, we would only give the QO if he was moments away from being traded...That said, next year with teams trying to see if they can edge out cap space, he might help us in securing a decent player for his expiring.

We may not get a ring this year, but at least we got a Cartier

Can we trade this one in for a working one when he runs out?

From what the annoucers and LB himself said it looks like Martin will be a Bobcat. I like the way he plays...He can score but he doesn't play Solo basketball. I see a good future for him with this team. He gets the chance to atleast play the last 30 games of this NBA season. Thats a dream for most people and He's play'd hard ,hustled, scored and has been IMO a good system type team player. I'm happy we gave him a shot at a NBA dream. He'll make a good back up at SG/SF

He beats Dudley, Jermareo, Shannon, Sean M., Ammo, Carroll, etc.

thats good enough for a spot in this league.

YES! We re-signed Martin for the rest of the season. I can't believe the Bobcats home page had it first...

I talked with cartier a bit last night before I knew, (and i guess before he knew) and he basically said "One more good game and hopefully I can be a real NBA player and hopefully I'll play well enough to stay after the summer."

He's totally living the dream, and happy to be here.

I really need to get online and update my rosters. I've never gone online with the 360 before. Don't even know where to start.

I think it would be worth my while though.

it's the way to go, the game automatically updates for trades..and if a player is playing really well, his stats change accordingly.. likewise team stats change depending on performance. the changes wont affect your league play if you've already started a league

Martin is the man. im glad we could find a solid player like him from the D- League, hopefully we can find 1 more. about the roster update on NBA 2k9 he isnt on there yet. They will hopefully get him on their by sunday, but since he isnt really a major player or anything then it will prolly take a while.

Was just checking out D-League stats there are 2 guys who fit the "big guard" that larry is looking for (that we gave up to get Vladi). Andre Owens and Randy Livingston. Both are 6-4, 220s. havent seen them play but they are putting up numbers that are respectable in the DLeague and they are rated in top ten for being called up this season. Of course if we can pull someone off waivers that'd be great too.

I thought Randy retired. He's been in the D-league for years.

Maybe, he was listed where I was looking, but I found a better choice (again, if he is the defensive guard we need) and that would be Othyus Jeffers. Coming from the same team as Cartier, he'll have some immediate chemistry and settle in faster too.

Has anyone else noticed since they signed him fulltime he hasn't play'd more then 10 minutes? I'd like to see him in there atleast 15 mins. If he's on NBA 2k9 he won't have a picture, It'll just be a blank face, maybe next year.

man I'm happy for Cartier, hopefully he will be in the league for a long time... I got live for 360 and Martin is on their and rated pretty high he is a 72 to put that in perspective Vlad is a 71...

I dont have it, as I have a Wii and 2008 was just a pain in the butt to play on the Wii...but likely Vladi's numbers will rise as he plays more and better... they are basing him on a 1/2 season doing nothing for the lakers.

Very true, I think Rad Vlad will be more like 75-77...Martin I was surprised about but not that surprised cause Trey Johnson, D-leauge All-Star, and recently signed by the Cavs to a second 10-day contract is also a 72....
