Who will the Grizzlies take with the #2 overall selection?

Okay guys, Blake Griffin is off the board to the Clippers as the #1 selection.
I see the Grizzlies taking Thabeet mainly because they need the size. Conley made strides last year after they traded away his competiton. Gasol did nicely as well but after him, their next big man options are Chris Mihm and Darko.

I call Ricky, pairing him up with the younger Gasol will do wonders for their offensive effort. Conley did make headway, but I still think they'll pick the Spaniard.
EDIT: we need a general BCP mock draft thread where all the updates (our selections) will go. Swedd?

I was planning on waiting until the top three are off the board but I can definitely put something together. Give me a minute or two
Hasheem, but its very, very close. and knowing Memphis, anything is possible.

Rubio. Too much talent there to let pass by.

Rubio Conley hasn't panned out & a Rubio/Mayo backcourt would be a step in the right direction for them.

I'm going to go with Rubio. Conley did make a bit of an improvement last year after the HC was fired, but he's nowhere near the PG that Rubio is. With Rubio being able to set up Mayo and Gay their offense could be scary. Let's also not forget that Rubio and Gasol wouldn't exactly be strangers to each other; they've played together on the Spanish national team over the past few years.

Well since the clippers didnt take Rubio I'll say Memphis will take him....

I voted Thabeet. A Mayo/Rubio backcourt would be extremely entertaining but a little too small to succeed.

Conley/Mayo is even smaller. Rubio supposedly measures out at 6'4 180 so it's not like he's THAT small, although he could stand to add some weight (like most international players).

Rubio won't go to Memphis:

Rubio doesn’t want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so. Fegan [Rubio’s agent] wants him in L.A., and if he can’t have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City.

Heh. So maybe he isn't coming in this year after all. Hell, I wouldn't want to go there either. Maybe Blake should go to Europe for a year!

They'll take Thabeet...though I disagree with it...I really think Rubio would be a good pick here, but I see him going to OKC not to to Memphis...They need size and he's definitely got it...him and Marc Gasol together should be real nice...

I bet if they want him, he does.
It will be just like Yi and the Bucks. he might even hold out, but NBA teams wont be held at ransom by internationals.

LOL so this 18-year old hyped-up semi-phenom won't play in Memphis or OKC. How sweet is that.
FAIL
I'm predicting right here and now that Ricky Rubio will not succeed in the NBA.

Not quite...Yi didn't have to kick out almost 6 million euros like Rubio will. If I were Memphis I wouldn't take the risk, esp. with a 2nd overall pick.

So guys, do we still want to put him as #2 in the BCP mock? or do we want to put Hasheem in that spot?

Oh, the Grizzlies will pick him, if only to hold his rights (plus, the statement that he doesn't want to play for either Mem or OKC is just hear-say, Ricky, himself, made no such claim).

Anybody second that motion?
If I were in Ricky's place, and I had a decent job as a 18-year old phenom in my home country, and I had to pay to get out of it to go play on a team that nobody in even that city likes and I'll never have a chance to win a title on, I wouldn't leave. I'm more than willing to spend another one of my teenage years with my friends and family, and there are plenty of hot chicks in Spain. Just chill, and keep his draft stock high. Maybe he'll land on a Cali team next year. There's a 1-in-8 chance one of them gets the number one pick for 09 as of right now. So my advice to Ricky is saty, stay, stay!

Bingo. The buyout only lasts this (and maybe next?) year then after that it's a straight transfer to draft him and trade his rights if need be. Either way, I think they would be crazy not to draft him. I think it's well worth the risk - even for a 2nd pick.

Naaaaa, Yi just had the backing of the entire Chinese government!!
I'd rather face a 6 mill buy out than them!

Okay. Rubio at #2 to Memphis it is! I'll have #3 up shortly (and I'm working on the mock page, bing)

It actually goes UP next year...to 10 million! It's also really 8 million this year but their team says they'll take 6 (according to Hoopsworld (http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=12698)).
Both those teams can probably afford to wait him out...but with Memphis falling back in love with Conley and OKC saying Westbrook would rather play PG (talk of too many needing the ball in their hands if they take Rubio) I'm not so sure either would.
It'd make much more sense to work out a deal with Sacramento.

The Chinese were easy...look how quickly the hapless Bucks backed them down. Getting a teenager to come up with all those millions just to play where he doesn't want to...THAT would be a chore.

Lies? How can a prediction be a lie? It hasn't happened yet! Anyways...like I said; I don't think he'll succeed. Bing! Thank you for disagreeing. Maybe Ricky will be great. But, personally I think he's a 10-20 pick, not 1-3. Just my contrarian opinion. I get that way sometimes.
I understand what ya-all are saying that he is in a nice position and can make a choice. That's good for him; not sure I wouldn't do it myself. But I'm just very sick of LA basketball and the whole money-fame grab. Hearing all the Laker talk in this years playoffs is a major turn-off for me. There's just something heartless about LA.
I'm very happy though to see Denver, Cleveland and Orlando still playing.
