June 23, 2009 – Charlotte Bobcats General Manager Rod Higgins announced today that the team has made a qualifying offer to point guard Raymond Felton, making him a restricted free agent. The qualifying offer allows the Bobcats to match any offer he receives from another team.

Felton, who appeared in all 82 games for the first time in his career last season, averaged 14.2 points, 6.7 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 37.6 minutes. Obvious and well known move. Let's hope we can re-sign him and not start him off for much more than that.

Great. Now, how quickly can we trade him?

Only joking.

(On signing Raymond Felton to a long-term contract) (http://www.nba.com/bobcats/higgins_draft_preview_transcript_09.html)

Our plans all along were first to qualify and then to negotiate and get Raymond signed to a contract.

With PG being the one position scouts are praising in this draft class based on both potential and quantity available, one has to wonder how much of a market there will be for Ray after Thursday night.

I hadn't thought about this angle, but it's a very good point. If teams like Portland, Philly, and Atlanta all snap up young PGs, the options could become limited for Ray.
